Pojo's Pokemon Card of the Day

Beedrill - Fire Red and Leaf Green

Date Reviewed: 10.18.04

Ratings & Reviews below

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst.  3 ... average.
5 is the highest rating.

Thundachu Beedrill

Overview: I was really disappointed when I got the LeafGreen deck and found this card in it. It sucks. The first attack, Poison Sting does 20 damage and poisons the defending pokemon, for 1 grass energy. Thats really the only playable thing about this card. The second attack, Link Needle does a solid 50, plus 30 more damage for every Beedrill in play, not including the active. 3 for 50 sucks. Weakness of fire makes Blaziken an issue, but the no retreat and 90HP is pretty nice.

Unlimited: Pass. 1/5

Modified: There are much better Grass pokemon in the forrest... 2.5/5

Draft: 2.5/5

Beedrill is a sweet little card. (Did I just say "sweet"??!!)

It's swarmable.
Auto Poison along with 20 damage for ONE energy!
50 or 80 or even 110 damage that is easily attained for three energy!
Double Rainbow energy is a minor drawback here. With it you can do a consistant 70 or 100 damage on turn two with no drawback.
Free retreat!

OK, so it has a weakness to fire and 90 HP is a bit low for a Stage 2.
Overall, though, this is a great card and very playable.

Unlimited: It has problems in Unlimited, but the good one energy attack and free retreat help out. It's not hopeless here. 3.2/5

Modified: I expect to see decks built around this. 4.0/5

Limited: The big problem here is in trying to get a buildable evolution line in your deck. If you can get it out, it's a game winner, but as a foil Stage 2, you'll only have one in your deck and probably only one Kakuna... because of that, I'll only give it a 3.5/5 On the other hand, if you get it early or are able to grab enough Kakuna, take this card!

Beedrill – I’ll keep with my same review as before for those that may have missed it.

Possible 140 damage on turn 3 or 130 Turn 2 if you run DRE. You have to get extremely lucky to pull that one off. Either way it is a decent card for all those Speedrill lovers out there. Its 1st attack is decent too. 1G for auto poison and 20 damage. It lost its Fighting resistance which is a bad thing.

Unlimited: 2.5/5 – Here with DCE you can pull off a Turn 2 140 with a bunch of Breeders.

Modifed: 2.5/5 – Speedrill may make a comeback so watch out. Just kiddin. Fire is still popular (even with Blastoise). But if you can manage to keep 4 Beedrills in play then 140 with 90 HP isn’t too bad.

Limited: 3/5 – Chances are you wont be drafting more than 1 Beedrill so Link Needle will only be doing 50. But 3 for 50 in draft is pretty decent and his 1st attack is decent also in draft.
