Modified - 20 damage for 1 energy is strong, but 40 HP is weak. Caterpie's in danger of a quick KO from a Magmar. With a lucky flip, you can evolve to Metapod then Butterfree all in 1 turn. 1/5

Limited - 20 damage is good, 40 HP is not. Use only if you get Metapod, and especially Butterfree. 2/5

(04/07/08) - Caterpie

Name: Caterpie Lv. 6
Set: Great Encounters
Rarity: Common

Analysis: Caterpie and Metapod's Poke-Powers enable it you to get a Turn 1 Butterfree, even if you go first. This will give you a quick 120 HP, and an attack that will do 30 damage and heal. Next turn, if you add a Double Rainbow Energy, you can do 50 damage and are guaranteed a special condition. This is pretty good, unfortunately there is only a 25% chance of this happening. Nonetheless, I like this strategy, plus Rare Candy can help when you are unlucky. 120 HP and free retreat are nothing to take lightly, together they are great (talking about Butterfree). Plus, if you aren't able to evolve it, Caterpie does 20 damage for 1 energy, which is good. Watch out for Magmortar...

Modified: Good strategy of getting up Butterfree quickly, but be careful against Magmortar. (3.5/5)

Limited: If you get the evolutions, this works out great. 20 damage is also not something to be taken

lightly. (4.5/5)

What do you want from a basic? First and foremost you want a good evo, but lets look away from that now. A good basic helps you setup your deck in addition to evolving. Call for family, signs of evolution and the likes is great abilities for basics. This pokepower is quite good it ups your odds of getting fast stage 2 dramatically but is still kind of flippy. For an offensive attack 20 for 1 is pretty much the best you can do. Its below average HP is what keeps this from a high ranking. You would really like your basics to have a bit higher HP so it wont get killed in turn 2.
