Miltotic C

We end the week as we started . . . with Milotic!

No doubt that Milotic is one of the nicest-looking Pokémon there is. Incredibly hard to catch and raise in the videogame, and often very difficult to KO. Cynthia’s Milotic in the D&P/Platinum games is very powerful, and can be really difficult to defeat if you don’t have a good Grass or Electric type that can KO it in one shot. Is it going to be just as tough in the TCG?

Well . .. . no (big surprise!).

Milotic C is one of those cards that makes you sigh and think . . . why?  (Especially if it is the rare in you SV pack). It has a decent HP, sure, an acceptable Retreat cost of [C], and a horrible, but unsurprising X2 Weakness to Lightning. All of that would be workable if only Milotic C had a useful Power, or a good attack. Unfortunately, it has neither.

The first attack, Aqua Tail, does a mere 10 for [C], and lets you add damage by flipping coins for each Water Energy you have attached (20 for each heads). Ok, you have a potential 30 for [W], or 50 for [W][W] there, but that is nothing special, and as for being dependent on a flip? No thanks. The second attack, Wrap, is even more depressing. 30 and a flip for Paralysis at cost of three Energy? That’s just horrible.

Really, this is a very disappointing card. It is a rare, has great art, it’s the Champion’s Pokémon . . . why didn’t they do something to make it playable?

Modified: 1 (nothing going for it)

Limited: 1.25 (eh . . .you could get lucky with Aqua Tail)

Milotic C
Supreme Victors
Rare

A few days ago, we reviewed the Shiny Milotic from Supreme Victors, and it turned out to be pretty worthless, unfortunately. Now today, we've got Milotic C...does it fare any better than the Shiny one? I can go ahead and tell you one thing, the art is SO much better on this card (kawayoo is quickly becoming my favorite Pokemon illustrator for the works he's done in the past two sets). Is the card that much better?

No. :(

So Milotic C is a SP Basic with 90HP. Not bad, because it definitely beats out those Blaziken FBs and Gallade 4s (but then again, those have Lv. X counterparts...), so it's right around average. The x2 Weakness to Lightning is going to be a killer in this metagame, especailly with Luxray GL and Electivire FB (which shouldn't be played, cough cough) running around so much. It has no resistance, which isn't horrible, but definitely isn't great either. However, at least it only has a Retreat Cost of 1, which is vastly different from the Shiny Milotic, and pretty much any other card we've reviewed over the past few days. The card is solid.

But that's really where it ends. Aqua Tail is an attack that costs 1 Colorless and does 10 damage PLUS you have to flip a coin for each Water energy attached to Milotic, and for each heads, you get to add 20 damage. Not bad. Could potentially be 30 for 1, 50 for 2, 70 for 3, etc...but unfortunately, in order for this attack to do anything substantial, you better be flippin' heads ALL the time. Find something more consistent. Its second attack, Wrap, costs 1 Water and 2 Colorless (or a Water, Colorless, and Energy Gain) does 30 with a chance of Paralysis through flip. While Paralysis is a very dangerous condition, why not use something much better than a SP card that's really lackluster and unable to go anywhere? The attacks are okay, but they seem more suited for the Pre-Release environment, where this card is much more effective. Luck is a huge thing in Limited, and this card requires plenty of it.

I mean, it's got potential. My fiance and I were playing a game, she was using her Speedrill and I was just using the Cynthia SV Theme Deck (just for fun, of course) and I sent all the Mudkips and such to be sacrificial lambs. Then, finally, Milotic C showed up as I had one prize left...with 8 Water Energies attached. I managed to take out one of the Beedril through lucky flips, but obviously, it was over. That's when you should play this card. When you're screwing around, or if you're helping a player get used to the game. The latter approach works really well, I think, because it really goes out of the way to introduce a new player to the concept of luck and how much it sucks in Pokemon. Although, I think I may save an article on the psychological effect of luck-induced anxiety for another time.

Ratings:

Modified: 2/5 Not worth it. If you want to do ANY damage whatsoever, you've got to make a huge energy commitment, and Milotic C just isn't worth 5-6 energies just to do 100 damage when you could find something else that does it consistently.

Limited: 3.5/5 A lot better here, mainly because the luck aspect is completely accepted and Paralysis can definitely win games with basically no easy way to switch out Paralyzed Pokemon. The higher HP is great so you can at least use it as a wall while you power up some of your benched Pokemon. Some of my best games in my Pre-Releases involved this card...mainly for 1st/2nd turn Donks.

So hey, if you happen to disagree about my opinion on Milotic C, send me an e-mail at drtomoe123@gmail.com! I'd love to hear what you guys think!
