Milotic

Interesting card for review today: Miltotic follows in the tradition of cards like Electrode ex and Electrode Prime, which sacrifice themselves in order to provide some Energy acceleration.

Miltotic does this with the Energy Grace Ability: you can choose to KO it and then attach three Basic Energy from your discard pile to one of your non-EX Pokémon. The restrictions obviously hurt Miltotic’s playability a lot: there aren’t many playable non-EXs that you would want to use with this and giving up a Prize means losing some of the Prize trade advantage that is one of the main reasons for playing non-EXs in the first place. However, this restriction can be worked around by using Ditto BCR, a legal target which can then be transformed into an EX.

I don’t see the current card pool as being right for a card like Milotic right now, though players do usually find some uses for cards like this. Probably safe to say that it has some potential, even though it will most likely not be realised in the foreseeable future. It’s probably worth noting that Milotic’s Waterfall attack, though not very good in any other situation, could be used in a pinch to deal with Pyroar FLF if you have no other outs.

Modified: 2.75 (an interesting card that I hope will end up being used)

Limited: 2 (giving up Prizes here is too scary)

aroramage

Hey all you crazy folks at home! This is aroramage tuning in to give commentary on the Pokécards of the future!

Coming into the middle of the week, we're taking a look at Milotic from the new Flashfire set. Now this card's interesting not for its vanilla 3-for-60 Waterfall attack. No, this card's far more fascinating aspect is its Ability, Energy Grace:

"Once during your turn (before you attack), you may Knock Out this Pokemon. If you do, attach 3 Basic Energy cards from your discard pile to 1 of your Pokemon (excluding Pokemon-EX)."

That's a nice chunk of effect text ya got there. Luckily, Milotic doesn't need to be the active Pokemon in order for this effect to go off - not that you'd want either her or her pre-evo Feebas hanging around out front. Still though, it's easy to see what this card was meant to do: you'd ideally attach 3 Energy to Milotic, Knock her Out, then use those 3 Energy to attach to another Pokemon.

There are a couple of problems with this though. Right away, you're having to KO one of your guys in order to pump another up, so you're already giving your opponent a Prize for doing nothing. The other main issue is that Pokémon like Yvetal-EX and Keldeo-EX are primary targets for this kind of effect - except that you can't give them the energy because of Milotic's restriction.

So who's a good partner for this? Well, pretty much any Pokemon that could use 3 Energy. We've still got Suicune (PLB) with his Safeguard to fight off opposing Pokemon-EX, or maybe if you're weird you could use Kecleon (PLF) for a casual mirror deck. Maybe Goodra (FLF) with his regenerative powers would be a better option for gathering energy or obtaining ?

That's Milotic's greatest problem: there's no good partner for her. The ones you'd partner her with can't be used with her restriction, and the ones you can partner her with aren't good enough for competitive play. Still, as casual goes, it can be fun to try out what combinations would work with her, but then you have to ask yourself, "Is it worth giving my opponent a prize in exchange for some extra energy?"

Modified: 2/5

Limited: 1.5/5 (she's really not that much better here, especially given the limited options available)

Arora Notealis: Don't let the evil eye of Milotic intimidate you.
