Rhydon (XY)

Are you the kind of player who enjoys thinking up difficult but potentially devastating combos? If so, then the designers at Pokémon HQ have dreamed up a card to drive you insane.

You really shouldn’t even be giving Rhydon a second look. He’s a low-ish HP Stage 1, Weak to Grass (even Virizion EX one-shots him, and that’s a set-up Pokémon) with a horrible retreat cost. His first attack is an underpowered vanilla effort and his second costs three Fighting Energy and one Colourless. But that is what may actually tempt some people.

The appropriately-named Mad Mountain makes you fulfill some unlikely conditions in order to generate a great effect. For a start you have to get all that Energy on Rhydon (and there’s no real acceleration for Fighting). Next you have to flip 2 heads (Victory Star Victini can help a bit, but the odds are still against you on this). Then you have to have enough damage counters on Rhydon to make the attack worthwhile (which means setting up Damage Swap Reuniclus because most attacks will just obliterate Rhydon in one hit). Once you have achieved all this you can discard the top card of your opponent’s deck for every damage counter on Rhydon (maximum of nine).

It’s the most ridiculous, uber-combotastic, utterly impractical, way of trying to mill an opponent into defeat by deck out. I would have nothing but admiration for anyone who managed to pull this off in an actual tournament game.

But please, for the sake of your sanity, don’t even try.

Rating

Modified: 1.5 (mad by name, mad by nature)

Limited: 2 (it’s possible you could pull it off in this format. But still highly unlikely)

Unlimited 150

Rhydon.

Standard.

This is such a frustrating card! First, you’d be frustrated to pull a Stage 1 Rare that isn’t even fully evolved. Second, Mad Mountain is almost a cool attack… but for some reason, like Arbok yesterday, they decided to hint at something wonderful then completely neuter it. Even without having to flip any coins, it’s a 4 Energy attack in a Type that has no good acceleration and it also relies on Rhydon taking damage… but not being KO’d. You could reduce the cost right down and it’d still be really risky as you can’t just slap Energy on it and Mad Mountain away, you either need to get hit or set up yet another Evolution like Reuniclus to get damage onto it.

It might’ve been nice to see another Mill deck make its way into Standard after Durant rotated, many card games feature alternate win conditions and it’s something Pokémon lacks. It doesn’t even Evolve into anything useful…

Unlimited 150.
In a way it’s even more frustrating here! Rhydon has the option to evolve into Rhyperior (Diamond & Pearl) which Mills 3 cards off the top of your opponent’s deck. If Mad Mountain wasn’t so restricted you could use Memory Berry or Celebi EX to allow Rhyperior to continue to Milling action. As it stands, it’s just another Stage 1 to Evolve into a Stage 2 with a lacklustre track record.

Unlimited 150: 1.5
