WotC Store
Arundel Mills, Maryland
May 24, 2003 ? Participants
Pojo peeps, it's Spencer Nalle. I went to the Arundel Mills, Maryland
SuperBattleZone in the Wizards store on the 24th and I did well for only
my second DCI event. Well, anyway, here's the deck.
Dontillery
I know someone named Don Tiller and he used
Donphan, too.
2 Energy Stadium
1 Sprout Tower
4 Copycat
3 Fan Club
3 Gold Berry
3 Switch
3 Double Gust
4 Pokemon Breeder Fields
2 Weakness Guard (for AQ Jumpluff-like 5 people played that but I never
faced one :-P
The goal is to use rapid spin and then send out Octillery so if they
retreat they waste their energy. This is mainly targeted towards Steelix
because Energy Stadium gives energy back, but if they're wasting their
energy I replace Energy Stadium w/ Sprout Tower, that saved my butt.
Round One vs. Adam w/ weird deck
Easy win for me. He had like, Charizard, Promo Entie, and Shining
Kabutops in his deck, along with Sandslash and Primape. He had DCE, with
was illegal, but I let him go. He was not a beginner to the game, he
just didn't know how to build a deck right.
Win 0 prizes to 4
3 points (DMTM was there and he decided not to do best two outta three)
Round Two vs. Luke Reed w/ Entiecargo.
The first move of the game I eeeked against his Pichu and shuffled my
hand into my deck w/o a coin flip, so now he takes a prize, I put
another prize down, and I have no hand. :-P
He gets Cargo fully powered third turn and fails to knock out my Cleffa.
I draw crap. Eeeeeek with no coin flip. (I became paranoid of coin flips
from then on, I had to consider wether or not to coin flip for like, ten
seconds before I eeeeked) He knocks out my Cleffa and I send out Elekid
w/ twenty damage from zzzzap. Fan Club for Remoraid and another Cleffa.
Now I have two Remoraids, Cleffa, and Elekid active. Breeder Fields two
heads for the Remoraid. I evolve the one that I didn't fan club for and
dropped a water nrg on it. He draws, drops band on cargo and knocks out
my Elekid. I promote Cleffa, draw Copycat, I forget how many cards I
get, but I drop Phanpy and retreat Cleffa for Octillery.
KO the CarGo. Then he gets a second cargo out next turn with howl. I
double gust the cargo, and evolve my active Phanpy to Donphan, switch,
drop nrg on Donphan, and...
KO the CarGo. On prizes he has three and I have five. It should have
been four and four but I didn't flip a coin for the EEEEEEK against
Pichu. All I remeber is that his game went downhill, but he beat me
because of a Pichu that survived like 5 turns of Smokescreening and he
finally got an energy and started zzzzzaping, I kill the pichu but cargo
is ready in two turns, I lose.
Loss 1 prize to 0 prizes ( That Cleffa is going to haunt me forever: I
would have won if I had remembered the coin flip)
3 points
Lunch break, but I only had a 6-inch sub at Subway. I wasn't hungry
because I was sick. I was proud of my record, though, specially because
Luke would go on to finish first in the 11-14 age group and get third
place overall.
Round Three vs. Tim w/Steelix and Espeon
Man, I almost had an accident in my pants, this game was so close. It's
three to three in prizes, I've killed two Steelix's (courtesy of Gligar,
double gust, and Octillery: thank's guys) and a Cleffa. It gets down to
the wire and I kill a third Steelix and thinks he has no more Steelix
but next turn he evolves and OH MY GOSH HE HAS FOUR STEELIX'S?!?!? Then
he power charges twice and flips four heads two get four metals from his
trash pile and then he forest guardians and wow a metal energy! :-O
He attaches a metal to Steelix and time is running out, we each only
have one prize. It's my turn, so I evolve my benched Remoraid with two
energies to Octillery but have no energy so I flip for Energy
Stadium.....heads! I attach and time is called. "Whoever's turn it is,
finish their turn," calls Mike. So I try to attack his active Magby. For
the game.....tails.
Sudden Death
Mike told me he was sorry for the mistake after the game. Here's what
happened: Since we each only had one prize, instead of restarting, we
continue from where we left off. It's Tim's turn and he just shamboozles
(I love that word) me by retreating and tackling for 20. I'm screwed.
Now I had thirty damage on me since the Remoraid i had evolved from had
already taken ten. Tail crush heads and I'm dead. He plays Discovery
Eevee before he attacks, so I think double gust for the win because my
Donphan has thirty damage and flail knocks it out. So I double gust,
thinking I kill Eevee I win. But he sends out my other Octillery with
one energy. I've got no energy. Stadium flip, tails. Elm. NO
ENERGY!!!!!!!! I begin to sweat and know I have to win. Practically
everyone in the whole store is watching. So my Octillery is stranded and
he promotes Steelix, attaches metal and flips tails on tail crush. 30
damage, heads next turn and he wins. I attach an energy to Octillery and
retreat for Octillery, but then I realize that both Octillerys have 30
damage on them. Heads tail crush and Tim wins. Smokescreen and it's
Tim's turn. Tim is a smart player, so switches Steelix for
Espeon...Psychic. I didn't see it.
Loss in Sudden Death
3 points
Round Four vs. Joey Landsman w/ coin flip deck (AQ Marowak, Kabutops,
and random LC Sandslash and Revelation Quaqsire
I mulligan like four times, and that's the only reason this game was so
close. He kept revive friendsing on his first turn and he has three
fully powered tops by turn ten, but I bounce back with Donphan and
Octillery combo: he ran out of energy.
Win 0 prizes to 2 Prizes
6 points
Round Five versus Kim with status deck
Kim used Octillery just like me, but she also used EX Arbok. Beedril,
which she never got out, she later me. The EX Arbok was by far the most
annoying, but I had Switches and Double Gusts when I needed them. She
couldn't hit my babies, but my babies hit her. Early in the game, she
had out Discovery kakuna and was using it to stall while she powered up
Octillery and an army of three Arboks, but Secrete Poison states
"attacks". Elekid time! This little thunder wonder knocked out her
Kakuna from the bench and then took one for the team against an EX Arbok.
Those two hits were the only ones she got against my babies, and once I
got Donphan up, it was game over for her.
Win 0 prizes to four
9 points
Round Six vs. Melvin w/ Fossil Gengar deck
Well, this guy's deck actually did well for such an um...interesting
deck. He said that his brother had thrown away most of his cards, and I
believed him. He opened with Gastly and Drowzee, and I instantly thought
Dark Gengar deck, but here's what he had.
Weird, huh? He was a good player to do so well with this deck. It's too
bad that he had his cards trashed, and the fact that he had Rocket's
Hideout Gym added to my confusion, and I kept thinking Dark Gengar, Dark
Gengar, but it turns out that the Rocket's Hideout was for Dark
Dragonite, which he never got out. He beat me with intelligent use of
curse, though. I should have won, but time ran out
Loss 2 prizes to 1
9 points
DMTM decided to do only six rounds, and I missed the top eight by a long
shot. I came in twentieth and got Cool Porygon :-( SI Slowking :-( and
Best Promo Prof Elm. :-)))
Tom Durbin got first overall and got the booster box by playing a EX
Gengar deck that beat a Crobat deck (due to weakness) in the finals.
Congrats, Tom. There were extra prizes leftover so everyone got an
Expedition booster pack, which I got a non-holo Blastoise that knows
Energy Cannon. The good Blastoise, I mean.
Afterwards, Melvin and I played again, only this time, the winner took
the loser's rarest card. It was an unlimited tournament and he played a
Base Electrode, Base Zapdos deck. On turn two, he thunderbolts a Donphan
for a KO, but when he Time Capsuled, he couldn't find another Electrode,
so I got off hits in between turns when he was powering up Zapdos.
Awesomeness!! The Buzzaped Electrode cost him the game. I win, 0 prizes
to 1. I got his First Edition Holographic Dark Blastoise.
Props to Elekid for being lucky (in round three Tim failed to attack six
times in a row against him before Double Gusting)
Props to Melvin for suggesting loser loses the rarest card they've got.
Props to Melvin for not going back on his word when I took his Dark
Blastoise
Props to Melvin for just being cool
Props to Dark Blastoise
Props to DMTM for holding the tournament
Props to EX Blastoise
Props to all Blastoise that exsist
Props to Tom Durbin-you were awesome
Props to Luke Reed
Slops to DMTM and the sudden death goof-up in match 3 I might have won
otherwise
Slops to the time being only 30 minutes-otherwise I'd have beaten Melvin
and gotten a prerealease Aerodactly
Slops to me- I forgot the coin flip when my Cleffa eeeeked against
Pichu, and I would have won, and that would have put me in the top eight
for sure, especially since my opponent was Luke Reed.
Slops to EntieCargo-wish Luke would have played his Dark Gengar deck.
Slops to me again for all these bad excuses
