This is reply to Zach Andonut's article on Magmar, posted 3/04/00.

Your reasons for liking base Magmar over the fossil version aren't very good.
The biggest thing you overlooked is the fact that base Magmar has the aweful
2 energy retreat.  1 is much better.  Also, fossil Magmar's 70 HP lets him
live through one Articuno freeze dry, or a water gun from a pumped Lapras. 
If you get stuck with base Magmar as your starting Pokemon, he will most
likely get KO'd before he can do hardly any damage, and even one energy
removal will probably prevent him from attacking before he gets killed. 
Fossil Magmar is a great starter, that can prevent attacks for 1 energy and
has a powerful 2nd attack. 

One more thing, you say there are no fire "beat down" decks...well, my fossil
Magmar/Electabuzz deck is definetly a beatdown, which can always attack even
after a couple energy removals.
