Finally
arriving on Planet Namek, Son Gokuu has easily
defeated Rikum of the Ginyu Tokusentai. Now facing
off against Jeice and Baata, Gokuu once again has
no problem defending against their attacks. When
Goku finally decides to strike, he defeats Baata
easily, causing Jeice to flee and seek the help of
Ginyu Taicho.
Once
arriving, Gokuu and Ginyu face off in a battle
that appears to have the sole purpose of sizing
each other up. Estimating what Gokuu's real power
may be, Ginyu boasts at the weakness of Gokuu
compared to him. However, Ginyu soon learns he is
incorrect when Gokuu begins to power up.
Packaging
A basic screen capture has been used for the cover
art. This is not the best method to go about
creating DVD covers. The description stating that
the DVD contains both the English and Japanese
versions is located at the bottom of the front
cover, which isn't a horrible place for it, but
the style was lacking.
The
back of the casing contains short descriptions of
each episode contained within plus a small screen
capture to the side. There is nothing wrong with
this technique, it is the pretty basic way of
creating the back cover. Within the casing there
are no extras.
English
The dub episodes are horrible. Dialogue,
music, voices, nothing came close to being even
remotely acceptable. Sean Schemmel has come on
board to voice Son Gokuu and does a horrible job;
his tone and emotion never change. Chris Sabat has
taken on the role of Vegeta and tries to mimic
Brian Drummond's accent. By doing so, he ruins the
persona of the character. There was even an
instance where the writers had Vegeta asked for
Goku's help. This is not something Vegeta would
ever do as he has far too much pride to ask for
the help of a lower class warrior.
Japanese
The Japanese version is almost perfect. The sound
is mono, but the original versions that aired in
Japan were as well. The eye-catchers are
non-existent, but that doesn't lesson the quality
of the DVD. The only real problem with the
subtitles is that the dub names are used for the
characters. When Buruma says "Son-Kun",
"Goku" is put. "San", "chan",
"sama", etc. are also not part of the
subtitles. The subtitles themselves seem to be a
little too high, but they are white with a black
border making them extremely easy to read. This
may be something that was only of my DVD, but
during the first 10 minutes or so, an incessant
ringing seemed to be going. I think I remember
other reviews stating the same problem, but with a
little patience and focus, you can block out the
sound.
Menu
What can I say other than "eh".
A basic screen capture of Ginyu is used with the
dubbed background music heard at the end of each
dub episode from season 3 on. The menu is
nothing more than disappointing, containing just
the opening, closing, and episodes listed with a
dragon ball on the side. To make matters worse,
there are no extras on these DVDs at all.
Final
Thoughts
Captain Ginyu - Assault has its problems. The
story and fight scenes are pretty good but nothing
too magnificent about them. For the money, I
wouldn't buy them unless they are some of your
favorite episodes or you want to possess them all.
Later minna!
