The fifth DVD for Trigun begins with an episode
featuring mostly Meryl and Milly as they attempt
to defend an elderly couple's land from a greedy entrepreneur.
This is the only episode in the Trigun series to
barely show Vash at all. Though nothing too
spectacular happens in this episode, the episode
is still entertaining nonetheless.
This
is followed by two of the greatest episodes in the
series, "Demons Eye" and "Fifth
Moon". In these episodes, Vash is confronted
by the Gung Ho Guns Dominique the Cyclops, E.G.
Mine, and Rai Dei the Blade. The beginning of
"Demons Eye" also features Legato
fighting against a rather large gang called the
Roderick Thieves. This encounter was written in
order to illustrate the power and evil that is
Legato Bluesummers and to introduce the nine Gung
Ho Guns, Dominique the Cyclops, Rai Dei the Blade,
Zazie the Beast, Leonof the Puppet Master, Grey
the Ninelives, Hoppered the Gauntlet, Caine the
Longshot, E.G. Mine, Midvalley the Hornfreak, and
Chapel, who is not present at the time.
Once
discovering the bodies of the dead Roderick
Thieves, Vash runs to confront Legato who he sees
standing on top of a giant mill. Finding a pile of
more dead Roderick Thieves, Vash is greeted by
Dominique and told that the killings were like
spring cleaning, getting rid of the trash who
"use people to line their pockets."
Angry at the fact that Dominique believes herself
worthy of choosing who lives or dies, Vash begins
to fight against her. However, Dominique has the
ability to move so quickly that not even Vash can
follow her movements.
In
"Fifth Moon", Vash is told to travel to
Augusta City by a man under Legato's control.
Fearing the well-being of the Augusta citizens to
be in danger, Vash scares them all out of the city
by yelling he will kill them all. Once the city is
disserted, Vash meets E.G. Mine, who may have been
the one to kill Dominic and Monev whom Vash
discovers dead, attached to a building. Learning
that the only choice Vash has is to either die or
let others die, he begins his battle with E.G.
Mine, which lasts only a second. Before Vash can
actually hit E.G., Rai Dei the Blade interrupts
with a shock wave induced by the thrust of his
katana. With an introduction and challenge, Rai
Dei begins to battle Vash after killing E.G. Mine
for being so easily beaten. Though Vash does not
have trouble dodging and countering Rai Dei's
attacks, Vash's compassion in the heat of battle
leads to his defeat. When Rai Dei is about to
finish Vash off, Legato causes Vash's true power
to be released, and Augusta suffers the same fate
as July did 23 years ago. Not only is Augusta
destroyed, but Vash also drills a hole in the
fifth moon.
Packaging
The cover is pretty cool this time around,
including a picture of Vash decending to the
ground with his gun in hand. Meryl and Milly are
in the background falling down a cliff. The
back shows a large image of Vash along with screen
captures of the three main villians of this DVD.
In the background is the light caused by Vash's
true power. We are also provided a short soliloquy
based on the Gung Ho Guns which is followed by a
paragraph summary of the episodes contained.
Menus
The menu is layed out in a way similar to a wall
with "Wanted" posters nailed on. The
posters, instead of saying who the bounty is for
and the amount for capture, the list for the menu
is provided. This is also animated, as the wind
slowly moves the papers up and down and light and
shadow go across the wall as if the sun were
really shining on it. When choosing an option, the
menu slowly and smoothly moves across the wall
until it reaches the destination.
Video
The colors seem much brighter and brilliant than
previous DVDs. The red of Vash's trenchcoat and
his blonde hair are much richer and less scratchy
than they had been before.
English
Though I didn't have a major problem with any of
the Voice Actors used for the new characters in
this DVD, some of the very minor characters were a
bit annoying to listen to. Legato's voice has
become much more British and (though I don't want
to sound racist or dubbie here) gay. This ruins
the mood of the character and his
personality.
As
for the Gung Ho Guns, Dominique the Cyclops' voice
actress was well chosen and portrayed the
character quite nicely. I didn't like how she
referred to Vash as "Gun Man"
constantly, but I can overlook an annoyance so
minor. E.G. Mine's voice actor was simply
irritating. He sounded like one of those washed up
fisherman dressed in one of those PopEye outfits
you see in old 1950s films. Luckily, this
character is killed off rather quickly. The Voice
Actor chosen for Rai Dei the Blade pulled off the
character acceptably, but unlike the Japanese
Seiyuu, Rai Dei's VA didn't have the warrior
samurai tone that the Japanese Seiyuu did.
All
in all, for the importance of these episodes to
the story, Pioneer did an alright job dubbing,
especially since most of the dialogue is left
untouched.
Japanese
There really isn't anything to complain about with
the original Japanese version. The subtitles are
yellow with a black border, easy to read in all
scenes. Each Seiyuu chosen for the characters,
even the very minor ones, are incredible. All of
the Gung Ho Guns are amazing in performance and
Legato is still bad ass.
Extras
The extras for this DVD were nothing special.
Simply a non-credit opening and closing feature
followed by DVD Credits. All
self-explanatory.
Final
Thoughts
The three episodes contained on this DVD make it
more than worth getting. Even if you don't have
the previous four or know nothing about the
series, you may be lost as to what is going on,
but you will definitely be entertained. With the
means and desire, this DVD is a must have. Later
minna!
