Before the review starts let me clarify a few things going on at Galactic Quest. For the next couple weeks I still won’t be able to make the regular tournies because of conflicting schedules with soccer. Following my little break Set 8 releases and then comes the big event in Los Angeles. Right now at least eight of us from GQ plan to make the weekend trip. Until then I’m looking for competitive duels over AIM to stay sharp. Feel free to catch me anytime, preferably Friday evenings. Now back to what I’m supposed to be writing about...

Ultra Mantis, Scourge of Fate

Type: Evolution

Civilization: Nature

Race: Giant Insect

Mana Cost: Six (6)

Rules Text:

  • Evolution — Put on one of your Giant Insects.
  • This creature can’t be blocked by any creature that has power 8000 or less.
  • Double breaker (This creature breaks 2 shields.)
  • Flavor Text:

It doesn’t need a weapon —it is a weapon.

Power: 9000

Rarity: Super Rare

Set: Stompatrons of Invincible Wrath

Power/Cost: This category is one of Ultra Mantis’ strengths. He boasts 9k power, enough to handle just about anything in the game, for the standard six mana fatty cost. Very few creatures come with a 2:3 ratio and solid effects to boot. You should not have any trouble paying the cost for Ultra Mantis either. He conveniently comes from the Nature civilization, fitting perfectly into the classic blue/green tandem of draw power, mana acceleration, and beat stick evolutions.

Civilization/Race: Mantis could be great if only he had a better supporting cast. The Giants Insects flirted with greatness for while but just could never quite get there. Four of them cost 3 mana or less (ideal evo-bait range) with ten others requiring four or more mana. Sniper Mosquito has the most potential of these, but everything about the bugger is like an oxymoron. His power and cost are obviously only good early on, while the effect hurts your presence early much like Artisan Picora (and we all know how good he is). In other words, trying to force the Giant Insects to work will probably come back to bite you.

Effects: Yet another unblockable monstrosity. Ultra Mantis works much like the popular Crystal Lancer. Double breaker combined with a guaranteed hit can get nasty. Then take into account that Mantis has ample power to kill anything else while defending himself from counter-attacks on your opponent’s turn. An above average fatty with the right weapons for laying on some serious pain. I like it.

Limited: 2/5

Most evolutions, this guy included, are simply not playable in the draft format. Stray away from Ultra Mantis unless you pull several Trench Scarab, the only feasible evo-bait in Stompatrons.

Constructed: 3.25/5

Ultra Mantis is one of the better Evolutions out there on his own. But when you take his race and rarity into account, it isn’t hard to see why he seldom gets used outside of casual play. Pretty good stuff if you can keep him alive long enough to do damage.

Horus Master lv8
Today we get to review 1 of 3 cards chosen by yours truly, me!!  The title of the cards wil be the "underused" cards (sorry couldn't think of anything else)

The first card of the day for this week is Ultra Mantis, Scourge of Fate.  Now I will show you some cool little things about this card. Okay now, on with the show.

Name: Ultra Mantis, Scourge of Fate
Cost: 6
Race: Giant Insect
Civilization: Nature
Type: Evolution
Rules Text:
Evolution-Put on one of your Giant Insects.
This creature can't be blocked by any creature that has power 8000 or less.
Double breaker (This creature breaks 2 shields.)
Flavor Text:
It doesn't need a weapon-it is a weapon.
Power: 9000
Mana Number: 1
Artist: Seki
Rarity: S
Collector Number: S10
Set: Stomp-a-Trons of Invincible Wrath

Race/Civilizations:  Giant Insects/Nature.  Surprisingly, this type has been getting a bit of evo-bait from the past few steps.  Nature, IMO, is possibly one of the best Civilizations to run evos, tied with Water.  Mainly because of Nature's flexibility with mana acceleration, destruction, and searchability.

Power/Cost Ratio: 6/9000   Considering this is a evolution, that is great... Actually, it would be great if it was an evolution or not.. So we get another plus for this card.  Now to show you another part, the Effect.

Effect: Double Breaker - Common in most Evolutions and High-Power Creatures..  So it stays par with them right here.

This creature can't be blocked by any creature that has power 8000 or less.
Well, this can stay up to any blocker, except to the more unplayed blockers that cost too much.  So you shouldn't have to worry about blockers with this creature.

Constructed (Giant Insect Deck) 4.5/5  You need to included this card if you are running a Giant Insect Deck or at least 8 Giant Insects.  Then you can include Dyno Mantis if you have more than 8 evo-bait.

Limited: 2/5  Though, you do have two evo-bait here, ones a little costy.  So just go with some of the other cards here and if you absolutely need something, you can throw this in.

Overall: 3.25  So it is above average, why not give it a try.. I could help you out a lot more than you think.

ZZ363 Name: Ultra Mantis, Scourge of Fate

Cost: 6

Civilization: Nature
Type: Evolution Creature

Rules Text: Evolution-Put on one of your Giant Insects.
This creature can't be blocked by any creature that has power 8000 or less.
Double breaker (This creature breaks 2 shields.)

Flavor Text: It doesn't need a weapon-it is a weapon.

Power: 9000

Rarity: Super Rare
Set: Stomp-a-Trons of Invincible Wrath

There are only 2 worthwhile non evo Giant Insects

1. Trench Scarab

2. Sword Butterfly

So being a Giant Insect is really nothing good right now.

Power:

Ultra Mantis has a huge power of 9000, enough to kill off an annoying Crystal Lancer or maybe even a Fighter Dual Fang. Power is one of Ultra Mantis' strong points.

Effect:

Being a Double Breaking Evo is nice, especially if it can't be blocked by 8000 or less. The effect is almost identical to Crystal Lancer, and since decks most likely don't run 8000 or higher blockers, the person who runs this will be in luck.

Overall:
I am not going to review this card in anything else but a Nature Deck, because it obviously isn't worth using in DWF/BUG/4cc/etc.

Giant Insect/Nature Deck: 8/10 A stronger Crystal Lancer of a Giant Insect is awesome.

Limited: 3/10 There are only 2 other Giant Insects in Stomp, so you better hope you pull 4 Trench Scarab with this guy.

Picture: A Giant Mantis. Wow 8/10
