DRY 1337

Rise and Shine is one of those cards that at first glance appear to be fairly meager.  At second glance it seems just as meager.  Is there a secret that’s waiting to be revealed?  Let’s find out…

Rise and Shine

Cost: 4

Civilization: Light/Water

Type: Spell

Rules Text:

·         (This spell is put into your mana zone tapped.)

·         Reveal the top 4 cards of your deck. Put one of them that has "blocker" into your hand, and put the rest on the bottom of your deck in any order.

Whenever we look at a multi-civ card, we’re used to being blown away by the combination of effects that we have at our disposal.  Unfortunately it doesn’t look like that’s the case with Rise and Shine.  When we look at Rise and Shine we see that it’s very similar to Submarine Project.  Unfortunately Rise and Shine does not offer any advantages and it costs 1 more mana.  To make things worse, it also adds a restriction where you can only choose a blocker.

So is there an advantage to using Rise and Shine?  The only advantage is if Alcadeias is on the field, although that’s a very rare occasion.  If you want better performance then I would suggest passing on this card and going with Submarine Project.  There’s no need to pay 1 extra mana just to get a similar card with restrictions and disadvantages.  Rise and Shine was obviously poorly designed.

The Good:  It makes yellow or blue mana.

The Bad:  Everything else

The Ugly:  You’re basically paying 1 more mana to add restrictions.  Stick with Submarine project instead.

Constructed Rating: 1/5 –  If you haven’t gotten the message by now, stick to Submarine Project.  This card, despite its multi-civ aspect, only offers disadvantages and comes with a lackluster effect.

Limited Rating: 3/5 – You’ll have more opportunities to use this card in limited.

Please feel free to post your comments, questions, and/or objections on the Message Board and I’ll be more than happy to respond.  Happy dueling!

Digimaster Rise and Shine

Cost: 4

Civilization: Light/Water

Type: Spell

Rules Text:

"blocker" into your hand, and put the rest on the bottom of your deck in any
order.

Doesn't seem so impressive, eh? You can get 4 blockers at max, and since
most decks now don't run any more than 12 blockers at max, you have a mere
4.1 percent of getting a blocker, assuming you have 50 cards in your deck.
Not so great. This card does not shine in control, nor rush. Where it shines
is a Diamond Cutter deck. Diamond Cutter decks try to pack many many
blockers stopping them from getting rushed, while swarming, and casting the
Cutter and releasing it. Trying to get blockers down with limited room for
search and draw may be hard, but that is where this comes in. It gets about
3 blockers on average. Very nice if I do say so myself.

Too bad this card doesn't work anywhere else. Control has too many options
to bother with it, but I could see some decks trying some based around
cards like Thrash Crawler. Here are the ratings I give this card:

Limited (1/5) : Bleh. Not worth it, especially in this set, with lots of low
cost cards, rush like crazy. Pass please.

Constructed (2/5) : A bit better, but not really. In a Diamond Cutter deck,
I would only give it a 3/5 in a Diamond Cutter deck anyway. Please do
yourself a favor, and skip this card. There are much better options.
