Welcome everyone to Pojo’s Card
of the Day! I hope you all got a chance to check out
my exclusive preview cards from Wizards of the Coast
on Friday, if you haven’t, please feel free to check
out my channel (the link is under my name). This
week I was asked to select five cards to review and
I thought it would be interesting if we took a week
to talk about a few of the potential “sleeper” cards
that could prove to be effective at the upcoming
KMCs or your local tournaments. I am in no way
saying that these are the best cards ever, however,
they can find their place into your deck and can
potentially change games and possibly even be the
reason that you win them. Today’s card is
Twin-Cannon Maelstrom.
Name: Twin-Cannon
Maelstrom
Civilization: Fire
Type: Creature
Race: Armored Dragon
Level: 5
Power: 5000
Flavor Text: “Fearless companion, furious
warrior, faithful friend.” –Master Hawkins
Rarity: Uncommon
Set Number: 44/55 l 4EVO
Abilities:
Extra Cannons –All of your other creatures
have “Powerful Attack +2000.” (A creature that has
“Powerful Attack +2000” gets +2000 power while
attacking.)
Twin-Cannon Maelstrom is one of
the lowest costing Armored Dragons out there and
that can prove to be beneficial if you’re running
any Evolutions. What makes this card even better is
that it's an even balance of power for its level,
Level 5 with 5000 power. Add to that its
non-specific-Kenina-like effect and you have
yourself quite the assistor and tech card.
I would generally treat this
card as a supporter for the rest of your battle zone
rather than a creature that you will be attacking
with. You want to be able to keep this card alive so
that all of your other creatures can swing over
slightly less-pumped up versions of themselves. It's
true that you can use this card to pick off your
opponents creatures or shields if you need to but
should not be your primary focus.
What tends to make this card a
little bit better than Kenina is that it boosts all
of your other creatures instead of just your
Dragons. It also happens to have 3000 more power for
an additional level. This card can allow your
Tatsurion to attack over another Tatsurion or even a
Bolt-Tail Dragon and can prove to be extremely
useful if you find yourself in a mirror-match.
This card has already been
finding itself into a few Dragon decks here and
there, however, I don't think it should be
restricted to just those types of decks. If you run
fire or even tech it into your deck then maybe you
should consider using a copy of this card. What's
even better is when you and your opponent are facing
each other down with similar creatures in the battle
zone and then you drop Maelstrom down. Even though
Maelstrom can't attack, your other creatures can and
they'll be getting an additional 2000 power to their
attacks!
Ratings:
Constructed: 3.25/5.00
(A great booster that will likely stay in the battle
zone for a while or force out some of the larger
removal spells from your opponent. There are
alternatives though, including Kenina and Essence
Elf, but they are more prone to a larger variety of
removal spells.)
Limited: 2.75/5.00
(There is a lot less removal when focusing on just
Evo Fury, however, there are plenty of ways to get
rid of Maelstrom should he attack or become tapped.
The biggest issue for limited is that Evolution
creatures are easy to play and have a huge amount of
power and they can easily deal with this card; it's
also a lot slower in this set than it would be in
3RIS or 6DSI.)
Stop back again tomorrow when
we continue to discuss and review some more
potential "sleeper" cards and prepare you for the
upcoming KMCs! Until next time my fellow Kaijudo
Duel Masters, keep calm and game on!
