We’re getting closer to Friday
and things here at Pojo.com are just starting to
heat up! Today’s card is a potentially dangerous
little Fire Bird that will keep your games from
fizzling out when your Dragons have the same level
of power. Everyone, meet Kenina.
Name: Kenina
Civilization: Fire
Type: Creature
Race: Fire Bird
Level: 4
Power: 2000
Flavor Text: Kenina sings a song of the
flame’s raging heat.
Rarity: Uncommon
Set Number: 42/55 l 6DSI
Abilities:
Dragonsong – You tap 1 less mana card to
summon Dragons.
Infernus’s Envoy- All your Dragons have
“Powerful Attack +2000.” (A creature that has
“Powerful Attack +2000” gets +2000 power while
attacking.)
Kenina is a member of the Fire
Civilization and fits into today’s fun fact:
Kenina’s origin is of Scottish descent and means
“Fiery”! We’ve seen a previous form of her, Kenina
the Igniter, here she had a very similar effect but
it was only a one time deal but it covered all of
your creatures, not just your Dragons. This
incarnation of Kenina allows all of your Dragons to
gain +2000 power whenever they attack! After doing
some research, I also found out that this effect
does indeed stack, so if you have three Keninas in
the battle zone and a Dragon attacks, it will gain
+6000 power!
Obviously Kenina has the same
standard of “I let you tap one less mana to summon a
giant dragon, kay?” This is obviously welcomed but
why the steep mana cost of 4 on the actual fire,
Fire Bird? Well, apparently Wizards stated, “The
fire bird cycle in DragonStrike Infernus originally
were all 3 or higher, but Nix and Umbra were lowered
to two to help make Light and Darkness – two
civilizations not traditionally about dragons and
that don’t have easy ways to ramp mana – exciting
civilizations to build a dragon deck with.” So they
decided to keep the fire and nature costs higher and
this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. This allows for
them to get around Screeching Scaradorable or worse
yet, Tendril Grasp! It also makes it a bit more
balanced overall so that we’re not seeing everyone
everywhere spamming fifteen 2 mana cost birds,
playing every Dragon in the game for 1 mana and
drawing 3 cards, etc.
Kenina also boasts a strong
2000 power by itself, sharing the title of “Most
Powerful Fire Bird” with tomorrow’s card. Generally
it’s able to take down the other Fire Birds or trade
off with Aqua Seneschal/Razorhide/etc., should your
opponent have them in the battle zone and if you
desperately need to get rid of them.
Overall, a very balanced card
that gives Dragons more power than they may need but
gives more power to those who can benefit from it
such as Tatsurion the Unchained or Herald of
Infernus. Expect to probably see this card less than
the other Fire Birds but don’t think that that means
it isn’t good or you just might get burned!
Ratings:
Constructed: 3.00/5.00
(A more balanced version of the Fire Bird cycle.
Costing four mana makes it a bit slower to play but
can set up big plays by giving smaller dragons even
more firepower!)
Limited: 3.50/5.00
(Still a good choice if you pull it, just not the
best one to pull in Limited. It can give your
Dragons enough power to push over cards like Dragon
of Reflections, Gemini Dragon, Hornblade Dragon or
Treetop Dragon, if they can’t already.)
See you all tomorrow for our
review of the final Fire Bird! Until next time my
fellow Kaijudo Duel Masters, keep calm and game on!
