Hello my fellow Kaijudo Duel
Masters! This week we’re taking a look at some of
the Super Rares that we haven’t covered yet from
Shattered Alliances. Today we’re taking a closer
look at a card that hasn’t seen a ton of play as of
yet, however, it can spell doom for your opponent
when used with other cards. Let’s take a look at
Khordia, the Soul Tyrant.
Name: Khordia, the Soul
Tyrant
Civilization: Darkness/Nature
Type: Creature
Race: Shadow Champion/Earthstrike Dragon
Level: 9
Power: 9000
Flavor Text: N/A
Rarity: Super Rare
Set Number: S10/S10 l 9SHA
Abilities:
(This card enters your mana zone tapped.)
Double Breaker (This creature breaks 2 shields.)
Essence Siphon- When this creature enters the
battle zone, put all creatures from your discard
pile into your mana zone tapped.
Soul Shackle- Whenever this creature attacks,
you may choose a creature in your mana zone that is
level 6 or less and put it into the battle zone.
Khordia the Soul Tyrant had
everyone in the online community going nuts once
they saw the effect on this card. Now obviously
there was a little bit of “hype” surrounding it, but
nonetheless, the potential was and is definitely
there. Khordia is a Double Breaker with only 9000
power for a level 9. Generally when investing in a
nine cost creature, you want to see a little bit
more power added into the mix.
Khordia’s “Essence Siphon”
ability forces you to put all your creatures in your
discard pile into your mana zone… tapped. When first
looking at this card I thought the cards it put into
the mana zone were untapped. It can be so easy to
misread a card sometimes and that one simple fact
changes the playability of this card. The biggest
issue with this ability is that it is mandatory and
you may not get anything to really put into your
mana zone unless you run a deck that mills cards
from the top of your deck or that would make you
discard from your hand.
One of the most insane combos
I’ve ever seen or thought of with Khordia has to be
combining it with Kurragar of the Hordes. If you
already have Kurragar out and you play Khordia the
following turn, the “Essence Siphon” ability
triggers. For each card that goes into your mana
zone, you get to activate Kurragar’s ability to play
the top card of your deck if it would be a creature!
So if you had five creatures in your discard pile,
you would be able to reveal (one at a time, and
resolve each however you pretty much decide) five
cards that you could potentially add to the battle
zone! Want to step things up a notch even further?
Imagine having out Steamtank Kryon and Kurragar out…
yeah, you will likely be able to attack with
everything you play from the combined efforts of
Kurragar and Khordia! Don’t get me wrong, this is a
highly unlikely situation, but essentially says,
“Game Over” to your opponent.
The “Soul Shackle” ability is
the one that really sets things up for some crazy
combos! Whenever Khordia attacks, you can choose
any creature that is level 6 or less and play it
into the battle zone… even evolution creatures! Now
keep in mind, if you wanted to play an evolution
creature, you would have to have the evolution
material already in the battle zone, otherwise you
couldn’t just play an evolution to the board. If you
combo this ability with cards like Lyra, the Blazing
Sun or General Finbarr, you can create advantage for
yourself every turn when you attack, very similar to
how Hive Queen’s ability would activate and resolve.
The only downside to this is every time you use this
ability, you lose mana. If you’re looking to avoid
this issue, run some Blockers that go to the mana
zone when they would normally be banished. This will
allow you to create an infinite loop of Blockers
each turn.
Overall Khordia is a decent
card. It can prove to be devastating if it stays out
long enough; however, I don’t see it maintaining its
presence for very long as it will have a giant
target on its head. It can create some neat combos
but as of right now it hasn’t seen a lot of play.
Maybe in time this will change.
Constructed: 3.00/5.00
(It’s really weak for its level and requires you to
devote a deck theme to it to make it more effective.
Limited: 2.75/5.00 (A bit slow and weak for
the power to level ratio but can create some fun
combos.)
Make sure to stop by again
tomorrow when we continue taking a look at some
other Super Rares from Shattered Alliances! Until
next time my fellow Kaijudo Duel Masters, keep calm
and game on!
