Hello again my fellow Kaijudo
Duel Masters! Welcome back to Pojo.com's Card of the
Day, where we take a look at cards from both recent
and past sets and give our honest opinions on them.
Today we're going to be taking a look at another
shield blast from Shattered Alliances that certainly
has been heating up those water/fire rush decks out
there, let's take a look at Scalding Surge!
Name: Scalding Surge
Civilization: Water/Fire
Type: Spell
Race: N/A
Level: 4
Power: N/A
Flavor Text: Everything has a boiling point.
Rarity: Rare
Set Number: 63/80 l 9SHA
Abilities:
Shield
Blast- (Instead of putting this spell into your
hand from a broken shield, you may cast it for
free.)
Choose target enemy creature. If it has power 3000
or less, banish it. Otherwise, return it to your
opponent's hand.
Scalding Surge is the
Water/Fire counterpart to Sunstrike, which we
reviewed yesterday. This is essentially a
combination of Rock Bite and Veil Vortex for the
exact same cost except that you pretty much get to
choose which effect you want to go off.
The versatility that this card
offers seemingly makes Rock Bite and Veil Vortex
obsolete. I'm sure you could use them alongside this
card, but why ruin the consistency of your deck with
less consistent cards? Early game this can allow you
to get rid of your opponent's Lux or Nix and late
game it can get rid of a pesky Blocker or some
creature that's holding you back from winning like
Andromeda of the Citadel or
Infernus the Awakened.
Honestly, I would have liked to
have seen both of these effects happen instead of
just choosing one or the other, but that would make
this card too overpowered. The only other downside
that I can honestly see is that you cannot choose to
bounce your own creature. In extreme circumstances
you may want to bounce your own creature to be able
to play it again (Andromeda). This card won't let
you do that so you may want to stick more toward
Piercing Judgment instead or you might even consider
running both in the same deck. It's ultimately up to
you and how you want your deck to run, but this card
has a great deal of potential and flexibility in
just about any situation.
Ratings:
Constructed: 3.25/5.00
(This card allows you to get rid of smaller
creatures or send bigger ones away. This card is
just about never a useless card... unless you happen
to be facing down Eternal Haven & Co.)
Limited: 4.00/5.00 (This card allows you to
get rid of just about any major threat out there
almost as soon as it comes out. After all, people
can't start attacking until at least turn three in
Shattered.)
Stop by again tomorrow when we
continue to look at some cards from Shattered
Alliances that didn't quite make the cut for the top
ten list. Until next time my fellow Kaijudo Duel
Masters, keep calm and game on!
