Welcome back
everyone to our second day of our shortened week at
Pojo.com! Today we're going to be looking at a card
that has increased in hype ever since Necrose,
Nightmare Bloom was revealed. Today's card has a lot
of viability in the future and is one of the easiest
ways to deal with untargetable creatures like Keeper
of Laws! Let's get right to it with Ripper Reaper!
Name:
Ripper Reaper
Civilization: Darkness
Type:
Creature
Race: Shadow Champion
Level: 5
Power: 4000
Flavor Text:
Life's scales are balanced by its scythe.
Rarity:
Rare
Set Number:

Abilities:
Cursed Scythe-
When this creature enters the battle zone, you may
choose one of your other creatures and banish it. If
you do, your opponent chooses one of his or her
creatures in the battle zone. Banish that creature.
Ripper Reaper is a
level 5 Shadow Champion with 4000 power. By itself
it doesn't do anything except potentially serve as
evolution bait for Impalicus. When you play this
creature you can sacrifice another one of your
creatures and banish one of your opponent's
creatures... but they get to choose what's banished.
When this card was
released in DragonStrike Infernus, there were some
combos that people thought of regarding this card,
but most of them involved too much investment in the
battle zone. To top things off, even if you
sacrificed something, they could simply choose the a
firebird to sacrifice or something that wasn't
really useful. We were able to combo cards like
Grudge Weaver with Reaper to force our opponent to
discard a card and sacrifice a creature... we were
on the right track!
Once Clash of
the Duel Masters was released we got a few more toys
to play with in the form of Gregoria's Fortress. Now
whenever we sacrificed a creature with Reapers
ability, your opponent had to choose not one, but
two
creatures to sacrifice! Combine this with the
aforementioned Grudge Weaver and your opponent will
have to discard a card as well!
Now once Necrose,
Nightmare Bloom was revealed, Ripper Reaper reached
a whole new level of hype. You simply play Necrose,
add whatever creature you want to your hand from
your discard pile, and then play Ripper Reaper from
your hand! You can potentially do this over and over
again and it becomes very difficult to deal with if
you also have a Queen Kalima on board!
One of my personal
favorite combos with this card is to play this after
you have an Orion, Radiant Fury out. Your opponent
will have to sacrifice a creature and you get to
search the top three cards of your deck and put all
light creatures into play! This combo has more
potential with the release of Light and Darkness
dual civilization cards, so give it a shot!
To sum things up,
Ripper Reaper is a decent card when combined with
other cards. By itself it's a horrible card, but I'm
sure it was designed to be this way and to give us a
way around cards like King Neptas, Keeper of Laws,
or even Eternal Haven. Expect to see this card a ton
the first couple weeks of the KMCs, only time will
tell if he'll stay there.
Constructed: 3.25/5.00
(Still a mediocre card but it can be amazing when
utilized with other abilities!)
Limited:
2.50/5.00 (The only way you're likely to benefit
off of this card in limited is if your opponent only
has one really good creature in the battle zone,
otherwise, you're likely left banishing a Lux.)
