Civ Review #3-Darkness(Base Set) Darth Vailo

===============================Forward======================================

Darkness has many uses, and it accels at each one of them. These traits are for manipulating the opponent on every conceivable level. Whether it be their hand, field, whatever. Darkness does it all. And Im not afraid to admit it, Darkness is yours trulys favorite civilization. So, allow me to be your guide once again, thru the dark, dank, dreary civilization that is, Darkness.

Bone Assassin, the Ripper (BS-047)

Type: Living Dead
Civilization: Darkness
Rarity: Common

Cost: 4
Power: 2000
Restriction: 4

Card Text:
Slayer (When this creature loses a battle, destroy the other creature.)

Commanders send them to the front line. It's too dangerous to have them close.

Bone Assassin, The Ripper is a perfect example of one of Darknesss most dreaded abilities, Slayer. Slayers are pretty straight forward, once they lose a battle the monster that destroyed them is in turn, destroyed. Bone Assassin the Ripper is at a basic attack of 2000. That attack while not terribly high, isnt terrible either. Especially when you take into account they will be on a suicide mission 90% of the time. Bone Assassin the Ripper also clocks in at a fair cost of 4. This isnt very bad though since Bone Assassin the Ripper is a body with a built in monster kill. Now as I mentioned before Bone Assassin the Ripper (Or any Slayer for that matter) will be used in a suicide mission a lot of the time. This is what makes Slayers so darn annoying. They can take out any threat they attack. And if their blocked, even If its a monster thats stronger than Bone Assassin the Ripper, it dies to. So Bone Assassin the Ripper, if you look at him in this way, is guaranteed a kill every time he attacks.

Death Smoke (BS-053)

Type: Spell
Civilization: Darkness
Rarity: Common

Cost: 4
Power: 0
Restriction: 4

Card Text:
Destroy 1 of your opponent's untapped creatures.

Savor the taste of fear!

There are many reasons that Darkness is one of the most dreaded civilizations, and Death Smoke is one of them. Death Smoke is the embodiment of the Darkness civilization in the scence that it is, fast, efficient, annoying, and cheap. DS simply kills one untapped monster of your choice. At four mana that is a very worthwhile effect. Basically this card brings up the manipulation factor again. Your opponent just paid 7/8 mana to drop his fatty only to see it destroyed next turn before it could even be useful. That is what makes Death Smoke one of Darknesss most dreaded cards. Most decks running Darkness will subscribe to a play set of these. And really, that is how it should be.

Terror Pit (BS-063)

Type: Spell
Civilization: Darkness
Rarity: Rare

Cost: 6
Power: 0
Restriction: 4

Card Text:
Shield Trigger (When this spell is put into your hand from your shield zone, you may cast is immediately for not cost.) Destroy 1 of your opponent's creatures.

I think, in fact I know that Darkness has the largest amount of Shield Triggers in the Base set. And if I may say so myself, it also has the best. Who doesnt like raw, simple, monster removal? I cant say that I dont. And I dont think you can either. Terror Pit is Death Smokes bigger, meaner, brother. For a high six mana you get to destroy ANY monster on the field of your choosing. Theres no untapped restriction here. Just a simple monster killer. Ive found in my experience while using Darkness that the opponent will often sit and think before attacking your shields. And there is no doubt that Terror Pit is one of those reasons. Run a play set of this bad boy. Believe me, youll thank me later.

Wandering Braineater (BS-065)

>

Type: Living Dead
Civilization: Darkness
Rarity: Common

Cost: 2
Power: 2000
Restriction: 4

Card Text:
Blocker (When an opponent's creature attacks, you may tap this creature to stop the attack. Then the two creatures battle.) This creature can't attack.

Devouring nice, fresh brains is all they know . . . And all they care about.

Darkness is a very well rounded civilization. They have nice evened out attackers, monster kill, powerful double breakers, resurrection, and Blockers. In fact Darkness has a good amount of Blockers. I like Wandering Braineater more than any of Darknesss Blockers because of his stability. He isnt restricted by any type of negative effect. Making him much better in my humble opinion than Bloody Squido. Wandering Braineater is very cheap at 2 mana. Making him a nice Deadly Fighter Braid Claw stopper turn two. And he has an even 2000 power. Making him a bump in the road to any weenie rush decks you may confront. The only real draw back to Wandering Braineater is the fact that he cannot attack. This really makes no difference to me however, since I dont think Blockers are for anything but blocking anyway. In the end, if youre still looking for a nice, early game Blocker, Wandering Braineater is your best bet.

Zagaan, Knight of Darkness (BS-S06)

>

Type: Demon Command
Civilization: Darkness
Rarity: Super Rare

Cost: 6
Power: 7000
Restriction: 4

Card Text:
Double Breaker (This creature breaks 2 shields)

"If I were to send him to the field, the would overwhelm the enemy in an instant. Where is the fun in that?"
-Ballom, Master of Death

Ballom hit the nail on the head, he will overwhelm the opponent. Zagaan, Knight of Darkness is Darknesss best fatty. Clocking in at 7000 power, Zagaan can easily bust up most any of your opponents monsters chops. This power also comes with the ever evil Double Breaker ability. Everyone likes that. But Im sure youre thinking Ya Darth, but he must cost 7/8 mana right?. Well, wrong! Zagaan, Knight of Darkness isnt eight mana, hes not seven mana, no hes an outstanding six mana! Thats right Zagaan is a 7000, Double Breaker for 6 mana. This guy is definitely my first pick for a fatty.

Vampire Silphy (BS-064)

Type: Dark Lord
Civilization: Darkness
Rarity: Very Rare

Cost: 8
Power: 4000
Restriction: 4

Card Text:
When you put this creature into the battle zone, destroy all creatures that have 3000 or less.

Dark Lords have no mercy for the weak.

Again here is Darknesss best card in Base set! Well, that is, in my opinion. What is an evil civilization without an evil, blood drinking queen? Vampire Silphy is my favorite Darkness card for a very good reason. For a pretty high (But worth it) eight mana you get a 4000 body that destroys every monster on the field of 3000 power or less. The fact that you can destroy every weenie on the field with this bomb is awesome. Yes, she does kill your weenies to, but who really cares when you can potentially Raigeki the opponent? (Yu-Gi-Oh! Reference) Plus with all of the graveyard recursion in Darkness this downside is slight. Plus youve got a 4000 body as well. All in all it is a great idea to run one of these.
