Starlight Forest of Nightmares- Duel Masters Invitational Weekend_Part 1

Andrew Wang (Nimbly)

Rainy Day Games

Aloha, OR 97006

June 11, 2005

$5 Entry- 32 Players- (14 = age<15) (18 = age 15+)

Hello everyone! I, your beloved man of…squirrels, is back with a tourney report again. I just came back with from working, so for one reason or another, I’m doing a report. I should be studying for my Human Anatomy Final, but you know.

So, I was ready for this invitational for the most part. I tested out a new deck 3 weeks before and it did fine, beat everyone 2-0 in a 5 round tourney. However, I didn’t get that much play testing after that, what with the Pokemon Regionals on the 28th and the SAT’s on June 4th, so I didn’t know what to expect. All I knew was that anything could truly happen.

I got at good ol’ RDG at around 10:30 for the Pokemon League, even though I didn’t even play pokemon all day. Everyone was basically there before me, which is weird since I normally get there early and the store only opened a half-hour before. Well, we had to fill out the form that we all know and love, and that was cool. I got it done first and everyone who turns in the list gets their foil terror pit and deck box right away, so everyone started to get the list in. Kinda funny…

So, without further ado, here’s the new (and improved?) deck.

Starlight Forest of Nightmares-46 Cards

Darkness

Creatures

4x Marrow Ooze, the Twister

4x Bloody Squito

2x Daidalos, General of Fury

2x Vile Mulder, Wing of the Void

2x Ballom, Master of Death

Spells

4x Terror Pit

Nature

Creatures

4x Crow Winger

4x Bronze-Arm Tribe

2x Barkwhip, the Smasher

2x Fighter Dual Fang

2x Innocent Hunter, Blade of All

Spells

4x Mana Nexus

4x Natural Snare

2x Dimension Gate

Light

Spells

4x Holy Awe

Well, there it is. I wasn’t that confident in this deck, but I thought it might make top 8 or whatever. Ballom is highly underrated and I think I was the only person to actually use it in a tourney. That’s either a really good thing or a huge disadvantage. What do you think?...Stupid question, huh?

I used this deck because I lost faith in my old red/black deck almost entirely. It did horrible for a long time, so I thought it would be appropriate to make a switch. Could be wrong, could be right. Who truly knows? I do now…

Ok, as the late Mills Lane would say, Let’s get it on!

Round 1- Nimbly vs. David H. (mono-Fire rush deck)

Game 1- This game was kind of interesting. I saw that he had some redness to his deck, so I wasn’t the happiest camper in the pack. This game however, I actually held him off pretty well. I had a couple lucky shield triggers and for some reason, he didn’t play Pyrofighter…Anyway, the game ended up going to me from a Fighter Dual Fang attack.

Shields-(2-0)-Winner__Nimbly

Game 2- This time, he came out strong. He had out some humans, which was annoying because I didn’t play until 3rd turn. I did, however, manage to clear the field with a Barkwhip. He got the momentum back with a Rothus that forced a tough decision out of me. Nonetheless, I hit him with a Vile Mulder to double break and finish him.

Shields-(1-0)-Winner__Nimbly

RECORD- (1-0)

That was different. I thought since he had red, it would be faster than normal, but I think I just really lucked out with some blockers and the fact he had a bad draw and shields. One of his only shield triggers was a Volcanic Arrows, which wasn’t that good at that moment in the match.

Between matches, I was testing out this cool deck. It’s a blue/green deck based on mana and bouncing monsters and stuff like that. I’d tell you more, but conformity isn’t cool…or is it, since everyone does it?

Ok next match. Shall we go on? No? Fine then.

Eh, I still have some time to burn. Let’s keep going.

Round 2- Nimbly vs. Steve E. (4 color control)

Well, this is great. The next game I play is against my boss. Ever here of the phrase, “no-win situation”? lol…

We were talking, in the time we had before the match started, about how the algorithm that DCI programs use to determine pairings and how Me and him or his daughter always get paired in the second round. Freaky, possibly…

Game 1- I was surprised by this deck. Kind of like that Family Guy where that one woman found out that her girlfriend was a man, then a horse then a broom. I thought, 4 colors? *slaps hands to face* Whaaa?!! Well, after a couple of turns, I finally saw it. I couldn’t even keep a monster on the field for a turn. To make things worse, he kept ghost touching my hand or Locomotiver came out to play. Every guy I played was Coriled or Rothused or Terror Pitted or anything else to screw it over. It was annoying. To add more insult to injury, I had 1 shield trigger, a Proclamation. Yay. I lost…wait, that’s too kind. I got my rear end sliced off and handed to me on a trash can lid.

Shields-(0-3)-Winner__Steve

Game 2- Hopefully this one would go better. And it did…to an extent. I did play more than I did in the first game, but hitting early shield triggers does not really brighten up my day. First too shields were 2 that could kill me. Oh, oh, oh, and when I had a couple monsters up and running, good ol’ Searing Wave comes back to make me die a little bit inside. This time, he got out the huge beatstick known has Bazagazeal Dragon, or Bazy for short. Wow. Personally, I thought that card wasn’t really a card actually good enough to use in play, especially in Invite Circuit. That thing killed me, and I just couldn’t kill it. I lost bad. Again.

Shield-(0-1)-Winner__Steve

RECORD-(1-1)

Whoooo, that was bad as a dessert on Fear Factor. What happened there was really indescribable. It was really that bad. I don’t think it was because I had a bad draw, or anything, I just think that my deck just flat out underperformed from the start. I don’t know.

Not much to say between rounds. I was upset. I basically needed to go 4-2 over the day to possibly make top 4, so the pressure is somewhat on. To go 3-1 isn’t the most easy task in the world. And from behind you…the next round!

Round 3- Nimbly vs. Jeremy M. (3-color Control)

Great, just great. Not only do I get to play the boss, but I also have to play another employee. And what’s worse is that him and Steve are playing relative deck strategies. I didn’t know that to start, but I figured it out.

Game 1- This game was pure crapulence. Whoa. That’s a real word? It’s real on spell check apparently. Anyway, this game was kind of like the first game against Steve. Jeremy is more free-spirited and joking-ly. I mean, when I guy tries to act dumb and play death smoke intentionally, you got…something. Yea, I did hit some shields, but he got out the coriles and emerals to put some goods in the shields. Nothing I can do but wither in defeat by a corile. Too broken…

Shields-(0-2)-Winner__Jeremy

Game 2- I’m looking back on this game, and personally I’m surprised by the way I felt. I was kind of determined to win in a way. For some reason, I was completely focused on the game and just…focused. That’s the word I would put it, but I never played like that before. I took him out quick with quick stuff and beat him fast.

Shields-(5-0)-Winner__Nimbly

Game 3- This game kind of reminded me of Game 2 with Steve. I started fine, hit some bad shields and ended in a bad way. I was stuck at the end with no hand, 4 shields and a Bazy and pyrofighter army staring me down. It hit all four shields eventually, none able to kill it. I run 16 things that kill monsters and I don’t get a 1. Kind of sad, but it was true. And he had only 1 shield left, it being a terror pit from Emeral. Dang. Game 3 goes to him.

Shields-(0-1)-Winner__Jeremy

RECORD-(1-2)

Well, that really sucked noodles. Lost twice to the same monster is really annoying. I didn’t think Bazy was really that good, but once again, I let another card slip through my hands and go to the field. I gotta research stuff and see if I can make crazy decks from randomness. I should feature write for that. I should see if I can work that out…

Anyway, this really sucks since now I gotta go 3 straight without a single loss to maybe make top 4. Longshot? Yea, I’m pretty sure of that…

Next round, and we’re off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of…the paper that has the pairings…of OZ!!

Round 3- Nimbly vs. Greg Z. (3-Color Control)

Ironies of ironies, I play a guy that comes to Rainy pretty often. I know him and he’s been in the game for about a month or 2, but he knows games. I didn’t know what he would do, but surely enough, 3 mana cards into the game, I figured it out. Another deck of hell.

Game 1- This game wasn’t that great for me. Pyrofighter came out early to screw with me and my plans. It took 3 shields to stop it. By then, I had some monsters out, but that didn’t matter after a well timed Searing Wave. What can I do? He played some more pyrofighter and I got stuck. I lost again, to this same deck idea. It’s really beginning to get old.

Shields-(0-2)-Winner__Greg

Game 2- This game was a lot closer. I managed to stop his pyrofighters from doing anything. I had out a barkwhip to start smacking up some shieldage for me, but that was short lived. Then he got out some Coriles and that was pretty bad. Eventually, when I actually had a chance to draw a new card, I got out the Fighter and managed not to hit a shield trigger for the game. Close though. One turn later and a couple of coriles and his emeral and holy Awe in his and would have put a stop to this train.

Shields-(1-0)-Winner__Nimbly

Game 3- Sigh…I don’t even feel like talking about this game. Just flash back to game 2 of Steve and game 3 of Jeremy. Same game, same crap, same ending. I lost to the ever popular Bazy Dragon. Why? Honestly, lost 3 matches to the final monster being Bazy really sucks.

Shields-(0-3)-Winner__Greg

RECORD-(1-3)

I have never done this poorly before in a major tourney. I never really had a losing record before. I could at least break even. And yet, I am still out of the top 4, no matter what. That really sucked. Now I get no invite…today that is.

I guess this is an omen. I have always stayed true to my Red/Black deck and yet I play a Black/Green deck for a month and everything changes. So far, it may just be some bad luck facing 3 relative decks that are strong against my deck, but the chances are so low that it must be a sign. I guess I need to switch back…soon.

Well, now it’s not even about the top 4, as that is out of the picture. I was just chasing an even record, a mediocre accomplishment that at the time seemed impossible. What a disaster, eh?

Next round, and off we go into the wild blue yonder!

Round 5- Nimbly vs. Jim M. (Yellow blockage deck – Maybe some Red?)

I saw this guy at the Pokemon regionals. He’s the father of the 11-14 division winner, which was cool, cause she was also playing and at the time was in the top four of the younger bracket. He was really friendly and I could tell this would be a great match.

Game 1- The game started out slow, which was fine with me. I got out a bunch of small stuff and it seemed to be at a stand off with his barrage of Emerald Grass and such. I did manage to get out Fighter, so that took out some blockers. He got out some other stuff that took out shields, but the game ended when Ballom hit the field and took out his monsters. He was kind of shocked by it. Well, it pretty much ended the game.

Shields-(2-0)-Winner__Nimbly

Game 2- relative to the first game, it was slow, but still faster than the first. I got out the Barkwhip fast, so that took care of some damage, however, he killed barky with a Larba Geer? That seemed weird for me. Anyway, we kept it moving and it I got out Fighter and a Nexus or 2 in the shields, for some future use. He couldn’t do that much to avoid it.

Shields-(3-0)-Winner__Nimbly

RECORD-(2-3)

That game was enjoyable. It’s a good match when the player really cares about the game and doesn’t necessarily complain about every single move that doesn’t go their way. I’ll admit it. I’m not the most fun to play in a serious atmosphere. Play one of my fun decks and you’ll really know why you play this game…to have fun, you know? I mean, when one of my decks plays a weird card like Divine Riptide on you, you have nothing to do but laugh haughtily.

Aye, the next round is approaching…

Round 6- Nimbly vs. Jesus M. (Mono-Blue? Control)

Game 1- This game was pretty basic. I managed to get out some stuff quick and the great Crow winger which screws over blue decks. However, he played stuff like Teleport and Spiral Gates that I don’t really see anymore and that ended up being my downfall. Corile reared his ugly head again and surfer barged in too. Nothing to do. I couldn’t really keep a stable monster on the field, so I had pain. Pain in the glayvin!!

Shields-(0-2)-Winner__Jesus

Game 2- You see, I had a better draw this time and came out fast. Even though I had some attacking monsters. I never get a break. The first two shields I hit…Aqua Surfers. Horrible luck. He came back with some corile, saved himself with an Emeral, putting a Holy Awe in the shields. Either way, those first 2 shields basically set the game and won it for him, cause I couldn’t come back ever since.

Shields-(0-3)-Winner__Jesus

RECORD-(2-4)

Well, I must say…holy crap. I have never done this bad in a tourney before, nonetheless a major one. I was only contemplating on going to the other Invitational in Vancouver 30 Minutes away, but now it’s almost a necessity to go. I’m pretty sure that I need to switch decks. Actually, also deconstruct this deck and burn the cards and release the ashes into the wind…or not.

The top 4 composed of

My friend Tim- Blue/green

Jeremy

Steve

Eric- some guy using a blue/green

Tim would go on to win the upper division. He was gloating, but I don’t really blame him, since I would probably do the same thing, just at a lower level. Tim was cool and gave me his Foil Aqua Hulcus, which was cool.

Ok, Time for props and slops

PROPS

+ Cool tourney and turnout

+ Tim giving me an Aqua Hulcus

+ My friend Daryn winning the younger bracket and free trip.

+ Getting 7 Foil Terror pits on the day. Not that bad at all

SLOPS

- Going 2-4

- Losing 3 Times to a Bazy Dragon

- The 1 pack I get, and being my usual self, has nothing good at all in it.

- Rushing to eat and go to work

- Bazy Dragon-Amazingly broken

-Corile- See Bazy

-Too many slops. It should be a fun game, yet so much stress is involved. Or maybe it’s just me.

- There not being enough people at Rainy Day Games for Duel Masters :/ Hey, if you’re in the Portland Area, We’d love to have you play here at our tournaments.

Well, this Invitational Circuit event is over. I’ll write another about the day after this event, the Batcave in Vancouver, WA. If anyone has a Q, Triple C, or just wants to chat, E-Mail me at

Later Days…
