The History of Magic Greetings, true believers! Book 1 Book 2 Book 3 Book 4 Book 5 Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (USA) This is where it starts. We all know that when You-Know-Who (you know, Voldemort) was defeated, Harry went to live with his only relatives, the Dursleys. Over the next 10 years, Harry endured punishment from his Uncle Vernon (a Drill Manager), his cousin Dudley (Weight Watchers anyone?), and his snoopy Aunt Petunia. As his 11th birthday draws closer, letters addressed to him keep coming (through eggs, chimneys, and the mail slot). Uncle Vernon goes nuts and takes the family far away from the house. But, you can't escape from magic! Hagrid (part giant) shows up to deliver a letter to Harry in person and it tells him he is a wizard. After a quick stop at the Leaky Cauldron, Hagrid and Harry go to Diagon Alley (it's the wizard world equivalent to the Mall of America) to collect some packages and Harry's school stuff. Soon, it's time to go to school and Harry has some complications, like how do you get on Platform 9 ¾ if it doesn't exist? Eventually, he arrives and for the first time sees Hogwarts Castle (Hogwarts and other magical schools are hidden from muggles by optical illusions, like Hogwarts looks like a run down castle, while others are in locations where most muggles cannot go, or they're unchartable so no one can find it). During the sorting, Harry tries hard not to go to Slytherin and winds up in Gryffindor, along with Ron, Fred and George Weasley, Hermione Granger, and others. (This is a little off topic, but I wonder if Fred and George ever had an identity crisis?) Our young protagonist has enemies already, Draco Malfoy (I would love to say something here but MadEye might turn me into a ferret or something), Professor Snape (everyone knows that even though he likes his job, he'd kill for the Defense Against the Dark Arts job. Fact: In his first year at Hogwarts, Snape knew more curses than half of the Seventh Year students!), and Filch and Mrs. Norris. Harry and Ron, they're best friends; seem to get into a lot of trouble. Once on Halloween, they saved Hermione from a mountain troll! These three students (with the unlikely help from Hagrid) uncover a plan for someone to steal the legendary Sorcerer's Stone (Philosopher's Stone in the UK)! Could it be Snape? Could it be the stuttering P-P-Professor Quirrell? Nah, it can't be Quirrell, he's not the type to work for Voldemort. Harry, Ron, and Hermione go to stop Snape and it turns out to be Quirrell! GASP! Well, Quirrell and Harry fight, Quirrell dies and Harry almost does. Voldemort is not defeated. He escapes, but all is right with the world. Now the school year is over, it's time to get on with our lives. TopHarry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Is Harry having a good summer? Well, not likely. After getting a letter from Hogwarts for doing magic (it really wasn't Harry.) Dobby, a house elf, came to the Dursley's house to warn Harry of an impending doom. Dum dum DUM!) This letter pretty much spoils his fun with Dudley and he gets grounded for it. Later, Fred, George, and Ron bust Harry out of his Privet Drive jam and he spends the rest of summer with the Weasley's (their house is a rather small considering the number of people living in it with magic to help keep it up). After a quick visit to Diagon Alley, a scuffle between Mr. Malfoy (*cough* Sleezeball! *cough*) and Mr. Weasley, the summer goes by with little else wrong. Alas, time to go back to school. When Harry and Ron miss the Hogwarts Express they decide to take Mr. Weasley's FLYING car (just a tad noticeable) and land in a lot of trouble at school. Well, to keep the story going, Professor Lockhart (AHHHH! I'm blind! Those pearly white teeth burn my eyes!) joins the staff replacing Quirrell. He does a dandy job of telling the students how fabulous he is. The year rolls by and soon a something weird happens (imagine that), and the school is under attack by the thing that lives in the fabled Chamber of Secrets! Scooby Doo, where are you? (oops wrong story). Our trio of heroes is soon on the case. Along the way they break school rules, meet Moaning Myrtle (a ghost with some serious issues), and take the place of Crabbe and Goyle. They have to use the old, out of order, dreaded girl's bathroom (COOTIES!) With an unfortunate turn of events, Hagrid is arrested for being the suspected "Heir of Slytherin" and Harry is being harassed for being a Parselmouth (having the ability to talk to snakes). Only dark wizards where said to have that kind of ability. Plus, more students are being attacked, and soon Dumbledore is asked to leave Hogwarts temporarily! (Oh my!) Soon as all stories go, our hero, Harry, has to go up against the attackers, Tom Riddle (Lord Voldemort before his time), and the 50 foot Basilisk (not your garden variety snake). Of course, Harry almost dies in the struggle. Fawkes, Dumbledor's phoenix, and the Sorting Hat help Harry stay alive and save Ginny Weasley (the last Weasley to enter Hogwarts and who was swayed under Riddle's Diary to commit the crimes of attacking students). Lockhart ends up with a slight memory problem and it look like they will be looking for another Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher for next year. Life goes on, people are safe, and Harry goes back to life in the muggle realm. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
