Valkyrie
Sinister

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale

DrStrange86 Today's review is Valkyrie from Sinister

I don't know much about this character, all I know is that she is a Defender, and a good clix.

She is 71 points, has a 6 range with 1 target, 9 clicks of life, and is a non flyer, Defender TA

Speed: 8,8,8,7,7,6,6,5,5 Charge on the first click, 1 of nothing, 4 of Flurry, one of nothing, then 2 of phasing at the end.

Attack: 10,9,8,8,8,7,7,7,7 BCF on the first 2, then 5 of super strength, then 2 of nothing

Defense: 18,17,17,16,15,15,14,13,12 Toughness the first three, then Willpower the last three

Damage: 3,2,2,2,2,2,3,3,2 Battle Fury on clicks 5-8

The Good: Great movement dial

Phasing at the end with willpower at the end is great for running away

High Def, great for wildcard and team

The range isn't great, but it's nice to have the option

The Bad: Attack gets a little too low too fast

Battle Fury takes away the range, but you will probably be in close combat then

Low damage on those flurry clicks

Can't be pushed

I think she should have a little more toughness

Feats: ICWO and Protected work great, Nanobots can keep her on her starting clicks

Overall: I am pretty excited for this piece, in fact she is one of the ones I am hoping for the most out of Sinister. The big thing is the high def: 18 on E Omac was ridiculous, and she is even cheaper. I would have liked to see super strength with charge, because with that 3 damage it's only a 50/50 change you will roll a 4 or higher. The flurry is great, but you are going to be spending your ICWO on the low attack most of the time, which is trouble since the loveable Con Artist is soon to be retired. I am glad there is finally a pretty good defender, I don't know much about the team but would still like to play it. Overall a good piece and an amazing pull at a sealed, but also good in constructed.

Constructed/Unrestricted: 3.5 / 5

Sealed/Draft: 4.5 / 5

16 16 15 15 14 13 12
02 01 01 01 02 03 03

Powers and analysis:
1st two clicks: Flurry, Super Strength, Toughness. 3rd click loses Flurry, gains Blades/Claws/Fangs. Click 4 loses Toughness. 5th click changes a lot with Phasing/Teleport and Willpower and the loss of BCF.
6th and 7th clicks gain Exploit Weakness as well.

The first half of Rookie Valkyrie's dial is one of the more dangerous close combat pieces in the game. All that front-loaded Flurry+Super Strength means she'll need some taxi/TK help, though. Mid-dial BCF means she remains a threat if hit. Then the late Phasing/Willpower combo allows her to run for the medic (recommended due to her very low DV) or to stay and fight without resting. With that lousy AV you'll need to have Perplex or Probability Control handy, though.

Feats:
No feats really leap to mind aside from the usual one-size-fits-all like Protected, Armor Piercing or In Contact With Oracle. The last might be especially useful for getting maximum value from this low-point threat.

Themes:
Unofficially, Valkyrie fits the Defenders, of course, as well as an Asgardian theme (at least I think she's an Asgardian...)

In sum:
For less than 50 points you get a dangerous tie-up attacker with the power to deal up to 6 clicks of damage on each of her first four clicks. Simply the degree to which she'll take the heat off your main
attacker(s) is worth her cost.

Rating: 3/5. She's no Vet Echo, but she'll do.

16 16 16 15 14 13 13 12
03 03 02 02 02 01 02 03

Powers and analysis:
Clicks 1 & 2 have Charge, Super Strength and Combat Reflexes. 3rd and 4th drop Charge and gain BCF, Toughness and Battle Fury. Clicks 5 & 6 lose BCF and Toughness respectively while getting Flurry. The last two clicks lose Battle Fury.

The Exp. is a much more self-sufficient piece than the Rookie, able to Charge into a fight by herself but not losing any damage potential. She also has better range ability. Her end-dial is less conducive to "cowardly"
actions like running to get healed than it is to tying up a softened target and chopping it to hamburger, so be prepared to sacrifice those 60+ points.

Feats:
With all her Flurry and CR, DAMAGE SHIELD is a solid choice to maximize her tie-up potential.

Themes:
She's a Defender officially now. :)

In sum:
A even better tie-up piece than the Rookie, if a little less disposable.

Rating: 4/5

Veteran Valkyrie

Range: 6 x 1

10 09 08 08 08 07 07 07 07
18 17 17 16 15 15 14 13 12
03 02 02 02 02 02 03 03 02

Powers and analysis:
Starts with Charge, BCF and Toughness. 2nd click loses Charge. 3rd click adds Flurry and Super Strength. 4th click loses Toughness while the 5th & 6th gain Battle Fury. #7 loses Flurry and gains Willpower. Click 8 gets Phasing, and the last click loses Battle Fury.

This dial is like a mix of the Rookie and Experienced.
That first click's 18 defense is golden for a fellow Defender taxi to leech off of until Val can Charge next turn and gut someone with her sword. Her SStrength is not well-placed, though, appearing after she's liable to be tied up in a fight and unable to use it. She can easily run at dial's end to possibly get healed up to do a bit more damage, but the new Support rules mean she won't get back to her best clicks easily.

Feats:
I like NANOBOTS on her a little bit. The longer she can fight from the top of her dial, the better.
PROTECTED is probably a little more useful on her than average so you can keep that 18 defense longer.

Themes:
Defenders, Asgardians. And blonde themes could work, too. :)

In sum:
Her role is less well-defined than the R or E. She's not quite a tie-up piece but not quite efficient enough as a 2nd attacker. But she's got possibly the best first click of the whole Sinister set. She will be sought after.

Rating: 4/5. An absolute must for Defenders/Wildcard teams and better than solid all around.
