Today's review is Merlyn from Justice League

 

Welcome to the start of Pojo’s top 10 clix of 2007.  We felt bad about the lack of reviews lately, so what better way to bring in the new year than to review the best of the past year.

 

Hmm…Green Arrow’s enemy is an archer…who woulda thought?

 

He is an experienced(uncommon, 55 points, 10 range 1 target, IL team

Special Power – Assassin’s Training – Merlyn can use perplex, but only on himself and modify attack, range, or damage


Speed:  Stealth for 2 is always good, and LC can help him get away

Attack:  Decent numbers, and psy blast helps get that damage through

Defense:  Pretty high actually, and ridiculous from range…though its with stealth….so I guess them ultima

Damage:  Well, with that high range, he will be shooting for 4 a lot, and the power is pretty cool, and keeps him lower priced than if he had perplex

The Good:  Special power

     Long range

     Defense averages around a 16-17

     Efficient for points

The Bad:   If he gets based he is screwed

    Doesn’t do too much damage after click 2


Feats:   The Society is a no risk help, Nanobots works, I think you know what works.


Overall:    Well, here is a piece that can be categorized by one word…efficient.  For the scant 55 point investment, you get a decent secondary attacker.  He is no very mobile, but makes up for it by being a good sniper.  If you are an archery fan or just like Green Arrow villains, or good pieces, I don’t see a reason to not use him.

- Each reviewer picked his opinionated Top Ten HeroClix of 2007.

Special Power: Merlyn can use Perplex but only on himself and can only modify his attack, damage, or range value.

 SPEED  -- Nice arrary of Stealth to begin the dial. Numbers aren't the best but he'll be in a bush most of the game anyway. Leap/Climb means Merlyn can flee from those heavy close combat hitters to try to get healed.

 ATTACK  -- Bare frontloaded, but Psychic Blast appears when he's on his last legs. 10 is awesome for such a small point value; and he has it twice! And in a row!

 DEFENSE  -- The Energy Shield probably won't come into play too much. 17 is still great though and there isn't much of a drop. Merlyn shows off a cool spike mid-dial that will make him a hard figure to hit.

 DAMAGE  -- It is a rarity to see Range Combat Expert and 10 range together. The special power can upgrade the average attack values.

 SCULPT  -- What's he doing with his thumb? He looks like an umpire yelling "you're outta here!"

 FEATS?  Nanobots is a necessity. The Society might prevent Stealth from being Outwitted. Force Field could give him some needed damage reducers. Maybe Ambush in case an enemy reaches him close combat. Keep the price inexpensive.

~ He's basically the perfect sniper: with Stealth, some high attack, and damage that can overcome Impervious, you'll be all set. Be careful about pushing however; Merlyn stretches six clicks deep. He could never lead an army into battle but will guarantee to be an amazing secondary attacker. Try this guy out.

Dario In a previous article, I wrote that 2007 is the "Year of the Archer," and Merlyn very much proves my point. Clocking in at a low [55] points, his 6 clicks of life is packed with quite a punch.

First and foremost we notice that he has an excellent [10] range and a consistent damage of [2] for the entire dial, with at least one power in every single slot. His defense only drops to [15] once but it stays at [16] and [17] for the rest of the dial (with Energy/Shield deflection for the first three clicks)!

His first two clicks sports an impressive [10] attack with Stealth and Ranged Combat Expert. Coupled with Energy/Shield Deflection and that [10] range, it's pretty clear that Merlyn is built for long range combat almost exclusively. For [55] points you can hide behind a bush and take pot shots all day long for [2]+[2] damage. Throw a little Trick Shot on him and you have an extremely powerful first two clicks of life.

His next two clicks of life loses Stealth, but it is replaced by Leap/Climb, allowing you to run away (one of my favorite tactics). He only keeps one click of Energy/Shield Deflection, and he loses Ranged Combat Expert, but he does pick up the all-important Psychic Blast and two clicks of "Assassin’s Training" -- a nice little ability which gives you great versatility. Sure you can bump that damage up to 3, but a nice bump rarely used tactic is to bump your range up instead (yeah baby, take that dial to eleven)! Regardless, this is a great ability that gives you lots of versatility!

On his last two clicks, Merlyn loses nearly everything, but keeps the all important Psychic Blast (PB). Heck, with these last three clicks of PB, he might just be at his most dangerous! Merlyn’s defense also pops back up to [17] and still has that consistent damage of [2], so he is still extremely dangerous.

The only real downfall of this character is the Injustice League team ability, which really needs to be replaced entirely by new wording; honestly, this piece is built for long range, so giving him a team ability that is only useful in close combat is ridiculous. Still, with or without it, Merlyn is simply a fantastic piece that can put on nearly any team!

Conclusion: Merlyn is an excellent long range attack piece that serves as a primary attacker on any team.

Final Rating: [4.8] out of [5] (docked slightly due to the lame TA)
