Crypt Ghast

At first glance, there's not much synergy between Crypt Ghast's two abilities. I suppose the ability to produce more mana from each of your Swamps helps you more easily afford the extort cost given by this and other cards you may be playing with? I don't know, I have a feeling that people are going to be picking this guy just for his mana-doubling ability. There are so many black X-spells and shades and the like that it's hard to fail to find a combo deck that he can go in.

Welcome back readers todays card of the day is either heinously overrated or herald’s the return of mono black control decks. In standard doubling your swamps is a unique effect and this card combines perfectly with the black aligned shocklands making it a potential contender for heavily black based decks. The extort ability obviously combines perfectly with the excess amount of mana you will be producing. This card is better than people are giving it credit for but not as good as some people think, with the right tools mono black could easily become a contender. In modern, legacy and vintage this card provides a unique effect at a reasonable mana cost but has a somewhat fragile body and doesn’t slot easily into most decks making it an awkward choice. In casual and multiplayer this is an insane effect extort is even more powerful the more players you add to the mix making it a fine addition to the already powerful mono black control decks around the kitchen tables. In limited it’s a body but its usefulness depends on how deep you are in black, a reasonable pick but requires a heavy commitment to show its true power. Overall a powerful casual card with some constructed applications.

Today's card of the day is Crypt Ghast which is a four mana 2/2 with Extort (pay one Black or White when casting a spell to have each opponent lose one life and you gain that much life) and adds one Black to your pool whenever you tap a Swamp for mana.  The cost of getting this into play is a little high for Constructed or Casual, but providing reasonable acceleration and lifetapping once it is in play makes it useful enough.  Pumpable creatures and X spells are a natural companion to this and if something like Dark Ritual gets this into play early it can certainly make an impact for a mono-Black deck.

For Limited this is weakened a bit by the format promoting multicolor decks, but adding some mana and Extort are reasons enough to include this in Sealed's half-Black decks.  For Booster this is a weaker first pick that at least doesn't lock you into one guild which allows some flexibility in later choices.

Crypt Ghast Card of the Day

Welcome to another great card of the day here at Pojo.com. Today we are looking at Crypt Ghast from Gatecrash. Crypt Ghast is a rare black creature spirit. Crypt Ghast costs three generic and one black mana and is a 2/2. Crypt Ghast has Extort, which means whenever you cast a spell, you may pay an additional one white or black mana to make each opponent lose one life, you gain life equal to the life lost this way. Crypt Ghast also says whenever a swamp is tapped for mana, it produces an additional black mana.

Crypt Ghast is amazing. I love mana acceleration. Usually it costs a lot of mana to gain advantage. But at just four mana, Crypt Ghast is a very cheap means to accelerate mana. And mana advantage is key, especially when five mana turns to ten.

And since Crypt Ghast also has extort, you will have plenty of mana to pay additional mana to activate the extort.
A really great card that is only a rare.

Crypt Ghast
A little black Mana Flare with legs with a bonus.  There's little reason to not play this in limited.  Extort can help, and the mana acceleration can help you get out something huge quick.  In draft, I hate to open my first pack and see this guy, but I'd love to see him in my 2nd or 3rd after I've already committed to black.  He's not that dangerous, but it will make a player happy if it gets passed around.  In constructed, someone is going to try some weird black and blue clone deck, get a bunch of these on the board and randomly X spell someone.  It will be very fun, but at 2/2 this guy will die 7 ways to Sunday, and even he even slightly makes a ripple in constructed, it won't take any time for people to adjust.  In the right metagame he could be a pivotal component that wins some big tournament one weekend, and will never be seen again after that.
