Simon Görtzen Wins Pro Tour—San Diego

Hundreds compete, only one earns Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour Champion title

 

Wizards of the Coast has named the first Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour Champion of 2010. Simon Görtzen from Aachen, Germany beat out more than 400 hopefuls at Pro Tour—San Diego, earning first place, worldwide fame and $40,000.

 

The top eight players to round out the Pro Tour—San Diego tournament, included:

  1. Simon Görtzen from Aachen, Germany
  2. Kyle Boggemes from Waterford, Michigan
  3. Luis Scott-Vargas from Oakland, California
  4. Craig Wescoe from Cincinnati, Ohio
  5. Daniel Gräfensteiner from Nürnberg, Germany
  6. Niels Viaene from Gent, Belgium
  7. Yoshihiko Ikawa from Nishitokyo, Japan
  8. Jeroen Kanis from Rotterdam, Netherlands

 

Since 1996, Wizards of the Coast has given away more than $35 million in prize money, which includes both cash prizes and scholarship awards.

Pro Tour—San Diego was a three-day tournament with a prize purse of $230,000. In addition to the main competition, Magic fans of all ages and skill levels enjoyed the extensive public event schedule, including the year’s biggest Friday Night Magic tournament, and the opportunities to meet with members of the Magic art, R&D and novel teams.

 

The Magic Pro Tour is the highest form of competitive play for the collectible trading card game. It is a series of high payout tournaments held throughout the world and run by the Wizards of the Coast Organized Play division. Next stop on the professional circuit is Pro Tour—San Juan in Puerto Rico, May 28 to 30.
