MULTITUDE OF CREATURES COME TO
MAGIC: THE GATHERING®
GAME WITH RELEASE OF
NEWEST EXPANSION

Legions™ expansion – the first all-creature Magic® set – features more creature types than ever before and reprises powerful “Slivers”

January 22, 2003 (Renton, Wash.) – Armies of creatures are on the move in the Magic: The Gathering game’s all-new Legions, the first expansion of the critically acclaimed  Onslaught™ block.   Scheduled to release worldwide February 3, the Legions expansion is the first 100-percent creature expansion to the Magic trading card game and is packed with an abundance of new ways to use those menacing creatures – such as Phage, the Untouchable, a creature so powerful that you immediately win the game when she damages an opponent.

Legions continues the innovative Morph mechanic introduced with Onslaught.  Many creatures in the new expansion have been designed to produce an added effect when they’re turned face up.  For example, Imperial Hellkite lets you search your library for a dragon when you turn it face-up.  The Legions expansion also marks the long awaited return of Slivers.  Originally introduced in the Tempest™ and Stronghold™ sets, Slivers can splice their ability onto all other creatures in play and, in some cases, even onto cards in your hand.  Blade Sliver makes all Slivers bigger, while Shifting Sliver makes Slivers unblockable.  Players get several other new abilities with the Legions expansion set, including Provoke, which forces your opponent’s creature to block it instead of blocking other attacking creatures, and Amplify, which will give a boost to many of the tribal decks built with Onslaught cards.

Legions Story Overview

The stage is set for an epic confrontation between Phage and Akroma, who will stop at nothing to destroy each other.  Both have drawn formidable armies to their side, forming legions of clerics, soldiers, birds, wizards, zombies, goblins, beasts, elves and more creature types.   Meanwhile, the Mirari’s influence has increased, mutating everything in its path.  With new mechanics and cycles for every color, players do battle like never before in the Magic: The Gathering Legions expansion.
