Magic News & Notes

Wednesday, June 20, 2001

I promise my update right now is not out of laziness.  This deals with the fact that the lone article I am going to post right now may be one of the single best we've ever had on the Pojo, so I don't want to water it down with other articles (no offense to the other fans and writers of the Pojo - you are all great!).  If you only read one Magic article all week, make it this one:

  • A man who needs no introduction in the Magic Community, Jack Lewis Stanton, has submitted his article about Stalling at Nationals.  He discusses a couple prime examples of Stalling from Nationals and their associated penalties, or lack thereof.  An exceptional read.  This article can be found in the Featured Articles section.

I would like to thank everyone who sent in the letters of support for my actions of several days ago.  Maybe my 90/10 assessment  was wrong.  There are a lot of really understanding Magic players out there.  Thanks guys.  Though, just to set the record straight, my name is Scott Gerhardt, and that's what I go by.  But, I'm sure you can see the nickname she gave me of "Scotty G" out of that. Just wanted to let you know that's not exactly the name I go by.  ;)

    Anyway, MORE MAGIC!

  • Jon over at the Helpdesk has given us his second draft analysis from U.S. Nationals, this time over Ben Romig.
  • Surviving IBC is the name of the article by Ethan Young which we slapped in the Strategy Guide section - a good read for those looking forward to the qualifier season.

Monday, June 18, 2001

Fletcher has another IBC deck for us today.  Check out his review of the IBC R/G deck.

Sometimes it comes to my attention that I have forgotten a lot of the readers' articles.  Pojo.com has always been based on the readers, and I am not about to let that stop now.  Here are a few of the reader articles that have been submitted.  These are not all of them, but a few I feel like putting up at 4:45am on a Sunday morning.

Those are a few.  I'm sure there are more, but wanted to get something up for you.  Later everyone!

There are a lot of you that may find this unprofessional what I am about to do.  As a matter of fact, I KNOW my boss will, and I KNOW about 90% of the rest of the world will.  The other 10% will think it's sweet, I imagine, though, but please bear with me.  I do have Magic content, and it will go up, but this is something I HAVE to do.  I apologize - this will NOT happen again.

Chris(tine), I love you.  I love you very much.  With my heart, and with my soul.  I am not ashamed of this fact.  I am not ashamed to shout it in front of the whole world (or the 2,000 or so hits a day we get).  My life has miserable and empty without you.  I feel like my Romeo has lost his Juliet, and I am lost in the dark without you.  I beg you to look into your heart.  I beg you to look at me.  I beg you to please come back to me.  I know you love me, and I love you.  We were meant to be together forever.  I have never felt so strongly about something in my life.  I know we can be great together, if you'll just follow your heart and give us one last try.  I love you.  I know the words don't do it justice, but I love you now, and until the day I die.  You're my soulmate - the girl for me, and I want the whole world to know how much you mean to me.  I wanted this to be a marriage proposal, but right now, I just want us to be together.  I love you - please come back.

Love,
Scotty G

     Anyway, onto the Magic content.

Good 'ole Hump-Day.  Let's see what we can't drag up to make it a little easier to get through.

Tuesday, June 12, 2001

*In a Singing Voice*  Happy Birthday to Me, Happy Birth.....crap.  I forgot - no one cares. :)  Oh well - here's something you DO care about.

  • We have some Random Beatings for you today.  I have to note something, though.  Spike is actually spending a couple weeks at my house right now.  He had his Beatings in on time - I'm just the lazy so-and-so who took forever to post it.  Spike wanted me to note that to you. :)  Anyway, Spike realizes that We Only Play What R&D Tells Us To.
  • Runblings From The Ass continues with more IBC tech, today looking at the deck I myself have been touting ever since seeing Apocalypse: The B/W Deck.

Monday, June 11, 2001

We've got a whole bunch of stuff to start your week off with.  Give it a look!

Hope you enjoyed!  Keep coming back!

Saturday, June 9, 2001

Jonathan over at the Helpdesk attended U.S. Nationals and now some of this reports from it are trickling in.  Today, we have a Draft Analysis on Adrian Sullivan from the first draft of the day.  Give it a look!

Friday, June 8, 2001

Plenty of stuff to head your way today.  Let's see what we're got on-tap:

Thursday, June 7, 2001

You know, it's pointless for me to discuss anything other than Magic today.  I just want you to see all the cool stuff we have lined it.  It comes from not giving a real update for a few days - I won't go into details why.   Special thanks goes out to the Pojosama himself who has done an EXCEPTIONAL job of keeping the site fresh the last few days in my absence.  Thanks Bill!

I actually have more to put up, but I am not going to overload you too much at once.  Need to save some for later, right?

We added yet another set of prices to our M:TG Price Guide.  Today it's Ice Age.  That's eight sets of cards we now have prices for: Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised, 4th, 5th, The Dark, Fallen Empires, & Ice Age.

The poll on the Message Board (in the right margin) wasn't working all that well yesterday.  I think the Polls server was down for a while, so you may want to vote again today ... it appears to be working better now.

One more book was added to our M:TG Book Reviews section.  Today we have a peek at:

  • Magic: The Gathering - The Official Deckbuilder's Guide by Tim Dedopulos

Tuesday, June 5, 2001

We added another set of prices to our M:TG Price Guide.  Today it is Fallen Empires.

We added another new section to our site, mostly for players new to the game ... it's called Pojo's M:TG Book Reviews.  We own almost every M:TG books ever published, and we are going to try to review them all, even some awesome books that are out of print.  A lot of beginner's have looked for a place to get started with the game, and books are a pretty good way to start.  We have a few book reviews for you today to start with:

  • M:TG Official Strategy Guide  - By Beth Moursund
  • M:TG Advanced Strategy Guide - By Mark Justice
  • Tournament Reports - By Jamie Wakefield
  • Totally Unauthorized M:TG - Advanced Players Guide -  Several Authors
  • Magic Cards Simplified for Player Parents & Beginners - George Baxter

We added a new Poll today.  We want to know what you think about the Pojo Message Board (which can be found by clicking here).  Do you like it just the way it is - with DBZ, Gundam, Pokemon, and other topics all together?  Or would you prefer we create a separate Message Board for Magic: The Gathering only?  The Poll is in the right margin.

Monday, June 4, 2001

Spent all of yesterday on planes - the reason for no updates.  Sorry.  Had to go cross country, and if you have ever tried connecting to the internet from a plane to update, you'll hate the $4.99 a minute they charge.  I did too, so there was no chance. :)  Let's see what we have for ya today.

  • Elvish P. has an article about Spiritmonger for us.  Have a look at what most people are calling the most dominant creature since Blastoderm.
  • Hydramon's History Lesson is back from it's long absence with, It's Like A Calzone, a history of Ponza.
  • We also added prices for "The Dark" Expansion to our M:TG Price Guide.

Saturday, June 2, 2001

Spike got in his article for Random Beatings.  Today, Spike talks about Ways To Deal Witrh Spiritmonger.

Friday, June 1, 2001

I'm sorry the update is so late today.  My life has been one emotional roller coaster the last week.  Anyone who knows me personally knows what is going on.  Sorry to everyone for that.  I will get to the updates now.

Thursday, May 31, 2001

You know, with my weird sleep schedule lately, you'd think I might be smart enough to get my updating done at a time other than 4 in the morning.  Oh well, I wanted to fall asleep and do it in the morning, but you need an update, right?  Well, here it comes!

  • Motumbo is back with his Pre-Nationals 2001 article, prediciting what he thinks will be seen there.
  • Jeff Zandi makes his Pojo debut with a monster of an article, detailing the Apocalypse Commons  this is an excellent read.

As a side note, but Jeff and Motumbo are becoming regular columnists here at Pojo - just wanted to let you know this since, well, it's 4am, and I am way too tired to set it up tonight.  When I wake up, I have gotten a bunch of articles, like ones from the Apocalypse Pre-Release, and I'll see what I can get posted for you.

Wednesday, May 30, 2001

Have any of you seen "The Paper"?  It's a movie starring Michael Keaton and Glenn Close, I think circa 1994 or something like that.  If you haven't, I recommend it.  Anyway, the concept of the movie deals with that your whole world can change in just 24 hours.  Well, mine did.  I have gone from low devotion to high devotion to Magic.  There is a lot of stuff going on, but I don't want to use the site as my personal diary.  Let's get onto the beef!

I'll try to get more up later in the day, so check back!

Tuesday, May 29, 2001

I've always considered the Pojo community like a family, so let me come clean with you.  I have some real personal things going on in my life right now.  I'm not killing my devotion to Magic, but it is going to take a back burner right now.  So, if the site doesn't get updated real well over the next few days, I apologize in advance.  Regular updates will start again as soon as I have a few things straightened out - hopefully soon.   Life is hard sometimes - I think you can all relate.  We have one thing for you today:

Sunday, May 27, 2001

Sorry for the lack of an update yesterday.  I was at the prerelease the entire day.  I'll be writing up an experience report over it later, as there were quite a few things I was unhappy with.  Anyone else who wants to write a report over their prerelease, I encourage you to send it to TournamentReports@pojo.com and we'll get them posted ASAP.

There was an error on the Tournament Reports page, which is now fixed.  Thanks to everyone who reported it.

Friday, May 25, 2001 (Evening Edition)

Good luck to everyone at the prerelease tomorrow.  I wanted to throw out one more thing for you for today!

  • Alden Taint gives us Part 2 of his listing of post-Apocalypse Type 2 decks.  Have a look.

Friday, May 25, 2001

One day away.  One day until the set is released.  So what do we have?  MORE APOCALYPSE!!!!  That and some other mixed articles.

More to come later...don't want to overload you with too much!

Thursday, May 24, 2001 (Evening Edition)

I promised a second update today, and here we go.  I have more articles, including good Apocalypse-related content for you.

  • Brian "Motumbo" Augustine is back with another good article.  Drafting With Apocalypse is Brian's look at the new limited format an talk about why this can be a good thing instead of it being a seemingly bad format.
  • Alden Taint looks at some Apocalypse Decks in the new t2 environment and offers up 3 different decks for your consideration.
  • Sean Reusing has a new B/G Deck with Apocalypse he thinks we should have a look at.

As a final note, I need to fix an earlier statement - the prerelease card is in Sanskrit, not Hindi as previously announced.  Thanks!

Thursday, May 24, 2001

Have we ever mentioned we have the best readers there are?  Well, we're mentioning it now.  Ask for strategy, and the readers produce.  Here is what we're kickin' around today!

I think that is plenty of stuff for now.  We'll pick through and try to find some more stuff for later in the day, so stop back by!

Wednesday, May 23, 2001

With the prerelease only 3 days away, the speculation about Apocalypse is picking up more and more.  Some think it's going to be good, others think it'll just be another blow-off set.  What do you think?  We want your opinions and strategies for the new set!  Write to me  and submit your article so we can post it here on the site!

Message Board Poll
What do you think about our current Message Board?

I like it just the way it is (combined with DBZ, Gundam, etc.)
Pojo's M:TG should have its own separate Message Board.
