The White Superhero, the Green Enforcer and the Black Butler By Isaac Tong Tournament date: Friday August 16, 2002 Number of people: 15 Location: Comic Warehouse, Brampton, Ontario, Canada Format: Type II Wow...it's been over a year since I wrote a Type II report but the experimental decks I made up were total crap and I didn't have enough cards to build the new hot decks in the current standard format. Anyways...since white and green were getting more support from Judgment, I've decided to try my hand at those colours. The only reason I tossed in black was for a bit of creature destruction, a few resurrection spells and Spiritmonger. If I wasn't so sure, I would have went with my remodified Machine Head deck but with all the Madness decks out there, I had to pass. Not to mention that it didn't have enchantment kill which meant that if I was facing Opposition or Solitary Confinement decks, then I should just scoop immediately. Round 1 - Isaac Tong VS Robert Frac This guy had the ideal white and green deck. Anurid Brushhopper, Phantom Centaur, Call of the Herd...then all he did was pitch Glory and instantly, his creatures gained the protection of the colour of his choice. Even though I had Steamclaw out, it was enough to do me in for game 1 and game 2 was pretty much the same thing except he hit me for 20 all at once after building a massive army. I think he had only one card in his hand at that time so had I drawn a Wrath...oh, well. Rounds 0-1 Games 0-2 Round 2 - Isaac Tong VS Jon Corbett He used a Zombie deck...that's all I can say. Every single creature was a Zombie except for one Faceless Butcher that never came out to play (he told me he had one). And to top it off, almost all of his cards came from Invasion Block!! I kept wondering why he didn't have Lord of the Undead in his deck. Well, in game 1, Phantom Nantuko with a Floating Shield slapped on it, Serra Angel and Wayward Angel helped me fly to victory. Game 2, it was a kicked up Kavu Titan who went into battle. Eventually, I hit Threshold and the Nantuko Monastery and Werebear came out for some fun. Rounds 1-1 Games 2-2 Round 3 - Isaac Tong VS Louis A. The guy actually found a way to use Legacy Weapon!! All it took was some time to build up a whole bunch of swamps, toss in Cabal Coffers and Crystal Quarry and he was ready to go. The deck he used was a mono black...which meant Innocent Blood and Chainer's Edict. He had no creatures. In fact, he used Corrupt and Soul Burn as his offensive spells while he kept drawing stuff he needed with Phyrexian Arena. Toss in Diabolic Tutor and Planar Portal with a ton of mana and he was set. He took both games eventually. Rounds 1-2 Games 2-4 Round 4 - Isaac Tong VS Luca Gerrace He told me his deck was white and blue. I started worrying until he started playing nothing but Birds. Yeah, he had Soulcatchers' Aerie but it wasn't anything to worry about. I mean, no Commander Eesha or Lieutenant Kirtar or Major Teroh...the guy didn't even have a Kangee, which could have come in handy!! Game 1 involved Phantom Tiger with an Armadillo Cloak and Serra Angel with a bonus to my white creatures thanks to him playing Divine Sacrament. Game 2...Kavu Titan rocked the house along with the Phantom Tiger. And I kept sending him useless cards back to his hand with Forcemage Advocate to keep things interesting. Finally, I wrapped things up by killing him with Birds of Paradise since they also got a nice big fat bonus thanks to Soulcatchers' Aerie. Rounds 2-2 Games 4-4 Well, I still have a long way to go until I build that super Type II deck but hopefully, things will pick up with Onslaught. Now without further adieu...props and slops (or cheers and jeers...whatever you wanna call it, I don't care). Props My folks for always putting up with my hobby. They were a bit more relieved this time since this tournament didn't go that late. Slops I can give a long list but I'm just a little ticked for not doing well enough. I don't know if I'll ever be able to find the cards to build a killer Type II deck. That reminds me...I need to go to a prerelease sometime. Until next time, loyal readers!!
