[As A Father]

This is our second incarnation of Choza. Interesting effect, but suffers from Sasuke syndrome like the previous version. He also gets a +1 when attacking, so he’s essentially a 7 on turn 4. Not too shabby. His additional effect keeps him around, and makes him a little more playable in the long run. However, he’s still incredibly vulnerable during the exchange of jutsu, and his stats force him to be head ninja. So all it takes is one suicidal action or fireball to wreck this guy’s team.

Limited: 3/5
Constructed: 2/5 (Inoichi is the superior turn 4 drop for earth.)

N-516 Choza Akimichi [As A Father] - Earth - Ninja

Today kicks off a pretty interesting week; it's Father week for a variety of Ninjas. We've already seen Shino's dad Gen previewed her on Pojo, now for some others.

Each of the [As A Father] cards require their respective child to be used to their full potential. Not to worry though, since each of the children are very useful.

Choza Akimichi kicks off the week as a nice 6 power Jonin. As the father to Choji, it's only fitting he has Choji [Chubby] text. Swinging for 7 is not bad on T4 as it outclasses nearly all other options on that turn. Problem? He has "Sasuke syndrome", where he injures to 0/0. That's bad, especially for a high drop.

Now sure, he has some nice text that can remedy this. Healing when sent out if you have Choji pretty much insures any draws are negligible. Choji has two extremely playable versions out there, and while he may get injured easy, you can just move him to the side for Choza. I'd also like to say that if he heals when sent out that he also gets the bonus, but don't quote me on that... I'm actually not sure of that ruling. I've played card games that can go either way.

So here's my problem. Choza can only be a head Ninja, else he does nothing. With damage prevalent in the meta, shoot him and your Choza led team is likely headed to OV land, which makes the healing useless. And without Choji, he's not very good.

I'd like to say he's decent, but compared to the other T4 Jonin options you have out there like the other [As A Father]s and Asuma [BBQ] among others, I'd likely pick them first. I'd probably only go with Choza as a random 1 of if I wanted more options for Attack on the Blind Spots drops and after I exhausted the rest of my options. Even then that's a stretch.

Limited: 4.6 out of 5 - A 7/0 no hand cost T4 beatstick? SIGN ME UP.
Constructed: 2.3 out of 5 - Not horrible but not good either. Outshadowed by many other options.

Alucard of the Abyss After quite a long hiatus I am back to reviewing cards. This week we continue previewing cards that are coming out with in the next set, A New Chronicle. Today's preview is Choza Akimichi [As A Father].

First thing I usually do is stats. He is a turn 4 and has a nice healthy stat of 6/0 but a terrible injured stat of 0/0 (although it doesn't make him terrible due to his effect). He has all the same things his other version did, Jonin Rank and Food Combat Attribute. Nothing special there.

Onto his effect, which is an interesting one. The first part of isn't Valid, and it's that he gets +1/0 when he is sent out to Attack. Not a bad effect as it makes him a turn 4 7/0 Healthy when you are the attacker. The second effect is where he gets interesting. If you send Choza out to Battle while he is in injured status and you have a Choji in play you can heal Choza. Pretty good effect since it's out to battle and not just attack and also since he doesn't have to be opposed Shikamaru can't stop him. He also gets you 2 BRs when they let him through as opposed to one. It's a shame his second effect doesn't combo with his first, but you can't have everything.

Overall I think he may see play in some more aggressive type Earth decks. Earth's 4 drop spot is a little on the weaker side due to only having one good Asuma and a couple of the Uemon Ninjas from Approaching Wind, so Choza can help out there.

In Limited you pick him first on his stats alone. If you pull a Choji it's that much nicer, but you never pass up a 6/0 Healthy.

Constructed: 3.5/5 (He's not terrible as a 4 drop for Earth)
Limited: 5/5 (Stats alone make him a beast here)
Art: 2/5 (Not a big fan of the constipated look he's got going on)

Beastly Mage
Choza Akimichi

Welcome to another week of reviews, Naruto Fans. This week we'll be previewing Earth cards. Today's card is Choza Akimichi [As a Father]. This version of Choji's dad has a two-part effect. The first part is that if he's sent out to attack he gets +1/+0 during the turn, making him a 7/0 beatstick for that turn. Second part of the effect (valid part) is that if he's sent out to battle in injured status while there's a Choji in play he's changed to healthy status. Note that it doesn't say "healed". This makes it so he can get around a certain version of Itachi that's seeing some play (wink, wink). Overall, this card's pretty solid. In constructed he could pose a threat to your opponent. Try it and see.

Ratings:

Limited:2/5
Constructed: 3/5
Art: A beatstick with a beatstick... who would have thought of it?/5
