Beastly Mage

Ninja Art: Shadow Stitching

Today's card is one that only Shikamaru (Chunin version) and his dad can use. This Jutsu can change the effect text of another Jutsu to: "Discard the User". That means that it's like Water Shark Bomb (reviewed earlier this week), but for Earth/Shadow decks. Not much more to say about this card...

Ratings:

Limited: 2/5 (if you can draft Shikamaru)
Constructed: 4/5
Art: Splat! Splat! Shadow beats ink!/5

N. Jolly
J-506 Ninja Art: Shadow Stitching

Hello all, it is I, N. Jolly, eternal defender of all that is good and just in this world. I stand before the masses and say nay to all that which is sin!...so how was your day?

Today's card is one that's had it's rarity swapped a few times before it came out in it's final SR form; Shikamaru's trademark jutsu, Shadow Stitching. Let's look a the stats of this card, shall we: It requires the Shadow combat attribute, so only Shikamaru and his dad Shikaku can use it. That's a little strict, but we've used more restrictive jutsu before. It's cost is Earth/Earth, which isn't bad, as right now this card stands are Earth's only real negation, so it's pretty good on that front.

It's effect is what makes it special though, as it's Earth's only reactive jutsu: Change the test of the targeted Jutsu to "discard the user of this jutsu". That's a pretty nice effect, as it not only stops the jutsu but kills the user. Seeing as this element also has Yamato, it seems like it was built solely to take out TBM decks. But it's really good as a stand alone card too, as negation is something Earth needs more of. The new 1st Hokage was a step in the right direction, and this card really helps the element along nicely.

The only real issue with this card is it's primary user, Shikamaru. If Shikamaru [Unwillingness] wasn't around, this card would be great. But when the best Shikamaru in the game is based around not being sent out to battle, you've got a problem. Unless something happens to this Shikamaru, this card will not be ran, but I'm reviewing it on how useful it would be for the deck overall, so it's still a nice card in that respect.

Constructed:3.25/5 It's a good throw in for Earth if you have the room.
Limited:1.5/5 There is a good Shikamaru here to use for it, but not a good chance of pulling both.

StormVyper Zera Ninja Art: Shadow Sewing

For only having only 2 known users in the entire Naruto universe, this card should've swapped effects with Water Style: Water Shark Bomb. Like most reactive jutsu, they're pretty straightforward. It's a good card, and worth a look if you're using a Chunin Shikamaru and Shikaku.

Master Wang Ninja Art: Shadow Stitching

Another day, another card and today's card certainly gives me some stitching from the blood-bursting vein in my forehead as a result of the frustration I have with this card!

Let's be rational about this. Compared to Shark Bomb, of which we reviewed earlier this week, why does this reactive jutsu get the worse effect? It has MUCH less users, being at 2, and certainly deserves to go into the element with now the least amount of negation. I would've been so happy if the effects between these two SR reactive jutsu's were switched, because then Stitching would've felt more rewarding.

Now, I know what you all are thinking:

Master Wang, you charismatic godsend! How much of a difference is it really between discarding and removing a ninja from the game? If both remove the user from the battlefield, then they can be equally as good, right?

WRONG! Anbu, Puppets, Ghost Panic, Tobi, and Naruto, as a whole, would agree with me! You could discard that Anbu, Salamander, Orochimaru, Tobi, or Naruto/Shikamaru, and they could just come right back the next turn. You could've played a Disguise jutsu and probably done just as good. Plus it's restricted to TWO USERS!

Of course, I expect Squads involving Shikamaru in the future, but even then, it cannot compare to it's counterpart SR in terms of the dozen of its capable users! Did I mention it has TWO FLIPPIN' USERS!!! Less # of users should get the stronger effect if they target the same thing! Earth got man-handled by Bandai on this one and it disappoints me beyond sin. Sure, if you have Earth, you'll play this, but you have protection in other effects and may not even play this unless you have 3 Shikamaru's and 3 Shikaku's. Why? BECAUSE THEY'RE THE ONLY FRIGGIN' TWO PEOPLE WHO CAN PLAY THIS THING!!! I NEED SCISSORS!!! 61!!!! *skronks*
