Top 10 Cards of 2009:
#1:

Kankura
[Tactician]

#N-461

Review Date: Jan. 15, 2009

Average Card Rating

Constructed: 5.00
Limited: 4.33

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale.
1 being the worst.
3 = average.
5 is the highest rating.

Beastly Mage

Kankuro [Tactitian]

Today's card is one of the crown jewels of the Naruto CCG. The first time Kankuro comes out as a Jonin, and with not one, but two great effects! First off, once you deploy him (yes, he does have to be deployed) you get to look for one Puppet Ninja in your deck that's turn 3 or less, and put it in your hand. Pretty nice. Then comes the valid effect. During the Exchange of Jutsu, you can move one of the Puppets in your hand (that's turn 3 or less) to Kankuro's team in any position. That's just great! Trust me, this guy has a reason to be in the Rouge List.

Ratings:

Limited: 4/5
Constructed: 5/5

#1 Kankuro [TACTICIAN]

Here we are, folks.  The number one card of 2009, and most of you saw it coming a mile away (and probably run it yourself).  Drum roll, please?  The card of the year is...

Kankuro [TACTICIAN] has been seen in a lot of decks this year, and most decks aren't even considered complete without running the one that we're allowed of him.  This card was the reason that Sasori of the Red Sand was rogue'd down to one, as well as Kank himself.  But unlike a lot of the other cards on the list, this card was made powerful by both his effect as well as his stats, so let's take a look at them, shall we:

T3 HC0 Wind

Sand | Male | Jonin

3/3 2/2 CA: Manipulation

Set 12 Super Rare

Wow, only three keywords, and two of them are very important!  Being Sand is quite helpful, as it helps in Wind City decks.  But honestly, the real keyword that matters here is jonin.  That keyword allows him to use a large portion of water's jutsu as well as trigram, which along with great stats for the turn at 3/3 made him one hell of a card to hit on turn.  But honestly, if that was it, he wouldn't be the card of the year, he'd just be a great card.  His effect is what vaults him up beyond any other.  Let's take a look at the best effect in the game right now, shall we:

[TACTICIAN]

When this Ninja is deployed, you can search for 1 "Puppet" Ninja card with an Entrance cost of 3 or less in your Deck and place it in your hand. Then, shuffle you Deck.

Valid: During the exchange of Jutsu, you can place 1 "Puppet" Ninja card with an Entrance cost of 3 or less from your hand in this Ninja's Team in any position.

What makes this effect great isn't just the free draw and put into play effect, it's how puppets work in the game.  The ability for them to jump into teams without breaking the team limit allows the world's most played puppet, Salamander [LIFELESS WARRIOR], getting Kankuro to be a 4/7 ninja on T3 is quite possible.  With him at 1 per deck right now, he's a bit harder to hit, but most decks have enough draw to hit him pretty reliably.

Honestly, this guy is an auto inclusion in any deck you run right now, especially in block, having lost Kankuro [TRICK].  I really don't have to sell you on why to run this card, you either do or you get crushed by someone who does run it.

Limited: 5/5 This set has the LW, so run it and win.

Constructed: 5/5 Savor it, because it does need to be ban'd/rotated out/burned!!!

Block: 5/5 See statements for constructed.

Art: The first time I saw this card, the only thing I thought was "SUPER FLYING KANKURO ATTACK RAGE!!!!", and now that I see it after this list, I know that my thought was correct.../5

Well, that was the top 10 cards of 2009, and it looks like from this set coming up, we have a few contenders for the crown already.  This is my second 10 ten at Pojo, so here's hoping I'm with you all to count down the top 10 of 2010 and beyond!

#1 Kankuro [Tactician]

Today we are looking at the final card on the list.... and it should come as no surprise... We're looking at the #1 card of 2009, Kankuro [Tactician].
Let's have a look...

Kankuro
EC:3 HC:0
Sand|Jonin|Male
Healthy: 3/3; Injured: 2/2
Manipulation Combat Attribute

His stats are nothing special on turn 3 but his effect, which we'll check in a minute, makes up for it. Sand is good for all of these "Sand City" decks emerging all over the place and Manipulation CA makes him a must for puppet decks. Now the real kicker is that he has Jonin and he's a turn 3 drop with no hand cost making him an early powerhouse in most decks; a turn 3 KO Blow, Trigram, Vortex, Great Breakthrough, Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu, etc. can quickly turn the game in your favor. Now to his effect.

[Tactician]
When this ninja is deployed, search for one "Puppet" ninja with an entrance cost of 3 or less from your deck and add it to your hand.

Valid: During the Exchange of Jutsu, you may place one "Puppet" ninja with an entrance cost of 3 or less from your hand in this ninjas team in any position.

This is the killer. At first this doesn't seem that great and it really isn't unless you consider the card that made him great: Salamander [Lifeless Warrior]. Let's take a quick look at him:

Salamander
EC:3 HC:0
Puppet
[Lifeless Warrior]
Valid: This ninja can only be sent out to battle in the same team as a ninja with a "Manipulation" CA.

During the EoJ, you can place this ninja in a team with 1 or more ninjas with a Manipulation CA

Healthy: 1/4; Injured; 1/4

He's fetched by Kank and then played from the hand during the same turn, giving you a +4 team boost. Salamander's effect prevents him from counting as part of the "3 ninjas per team" rule so he won't waste space. In other words, Kankuro is a turn 3 Jonin with 7 support... something truly ridiculous

Limited: 3.5/5 Jonin is nice, but he isn't that great without Lifeless Warriors
Constructed: 5/5 No downside to him in Puppet decks... Or any deck for that matter.
Block: 3/5 Low score since he's being rotated soon T_T
