HMS
Leicester
HMS Leicester. What can I say? She's one of those
ships every player wants to pull from the foil,
because her reputation precedes her. I waited ages
to get one, then four came along at once. Not that
uncommon then...
A gunship of high repute, Leicester’s ‘knock down
two masts with each hit’ ability is genuinely
devastating. Unlike a number of other ‘big ship’
abilities which don’t quite live up their promise,
Leicester’s ability usually delivers. Mind you -
it’s not a foregone conclusion. Of course, when she
hits, she hits hard. But with four 3-rank guns, bear
in mind that Leicester only has a 50:50 chance of
striking home on each shot - whereas many of the
other English gunships boast 2-rank guns and a 2:1
chance of success. (Now Leicester with 2 rank guns
would be a lethal weapon indeed).
And the downside? Well, it’s pretty marginal, but
Leicester is only a 4-master, even though she’s more
points-costly than many 5-masters. This does mean
that she’s just that little bit easier to take down
if you can get in on her with a double-whammy from
some form of extra move and shoot action (a
sacrifice captain being the safest strategy). If you
can manage to unload a double round of shooting into
Leicester from a big gunship of your own - she’s
toast.
With a 1L move as standard, Leicester really demands
a helmsman as well as a captain, putting her at a
whopping 23 points before you’ve even considered
shipping Admiral Morgan aboard to gain that 1 in 3
chance of an extra action. A shipwright might be a
good idea as well, and - ooops... Suddenly we’re at
30 points.
Truth be told, in a high point game (say 75+) I’d
use Leicester in an English fleet. She is a
terminator par excellence. But in a standard 30 - 40
point game? Way too points costly to make the cut.
Rating 3.5/5. Great in attack, but vulnerable to
getting mugged by a bigger ship. And very pricey.
Cheers
Richard
