The Lost Fett

Today’s letter is from Leonard:

Hi, thank you for taking the time to read this email.

I just got a Jango Fett Bounty Hunter, and Im having trouble making a good squad with him.

Can you please tell me a few builds with Jango that I could make?

-thanks

Thanks for the letter Leonard.  This is a very good question, and one I am glad was asked.  He was one of my favorite pieces in the set when Bounty Hunters came out, but he was severely overshadowed by his upstart son.  It took some time for Jango to really come into his own, but eventually he did, though not easily.  He became a very solid piece only after a group of players on the Wizards boards set their minds to making him good and concentrated on finding a way to make him good.

Lets do as quick recap of Jango.  For 56 points you are getting 120 HP, 19 DEF, +10 ATK and base 20 DAM.  Not great stats for a 56 point piece, but not all bad either considering he is a non-Jedi.  His attacks get a boost from both bounty hunter +4 and Jedi hunter.  These are great when facing Jedi.  You are doing 30 DAM a pop with either a +18 to the uniques or a +14 against JWMs and such.  Where that +10 really hurts is against non-unique non-Jedi, especially boosted stormies.

His little bag of tricks is quite extensive, which generally makes up for a bit lower stats.  Flight is always good because of the added movement available over most maps and being able to get away from opponents without provoking attack of opportunities.  Sniper is the poor man’s accurate shot.  It isn’t generally as good, but it can be when trying to pick off characters in packs.  His final two abilities are what really make him good in a swiss army knife kinda way - flamethrower and missiles.  If the attack starts getting above a 50/50 chance of hitting, you can just launch a missile and let your opponent roll the die.  Flamethrower is always nice for the guaranteed damage or groups running in a pack.  Without the utility of these last two abilities, I don’t know if he would be that playable.

In the end, his lack of defensive abilities and low relative defense and attack really are what hurts him.  He doesn’t have mobile, evade or twin like his son, so these are the shortcomings you need to work around.  In the end there is only one real way to give him a boost.  You have to have someone else move for him.  This way he can either get out of the way after an attack or double attack.  There are a few ways to do this.  The skiff is one option, albeit a bad one.  As fast as the skiff goes down, I really would not recommend it.  You have a 50/50 chance of losing hi when the skiff is destroyed (only slightly less if running CS Yoda).  The better option here is the new rebel troop carrier.  You only have to make a save of 6 instead of 11.  Then there is good ol’ Thrawnmeister.  Thrawn’s swap combined with his force immunity makes for some nice help here.  By swapping, you can also get Jango into some prime flamethrower positions.  Then you have the auto initiative to get him out again.  Finally, you have what became his trademark – Jango-on-a-rope.  This squad uses R2 to fly Jango around and shoot at people with his double attacks or again a nice flamethrower up the gut.  I JIS (Jedi interference squad) build works great here.  It’s where you use Jedi like JWMs to run cover while Jango can lay back and shoot.

Jango is a very hard piece to play because he dies too fast and has few ways to get out of the way once he has attacked.  R2 and Thrawn are really your best bets.  Although, with the new set, look for Garm Bel Iblis and the rebel troop carrier to be ways to help as well.  One final squad where he can do well, but is much harder to play, is San Hill.  Generally when I run him with San Hill, I run an ASP-7 to help.  The ASP can lift him into and out of danger while allowing him 3-4 attacks where he would normally only get two.

I hope this helps a bit.  He is hard to run, but I have always enjoyed running him.  If you have any further questions let me know, and I will try to clarify further.  If anyone has any questions or topics you would like me to cover, drop me a line at sithdragon13@yahoo.com.  I will get to ALL emails, so if you have sent something be patient.
