Rapport

This week’s letter is the last of three from Phenix:

Sithdragon,

Hey, it's Phenix.   I noticed that the Jedi counseling addressed
names today and didn't specifically mention the Rapport error with the
 Jabba figs.

I'm assuming that no one is going to make a big deal about this, but
I guess after the Boushh debacle, I just don't trust rule calls
anymore.  Without an "Official" say so from Wizards, anyone who wants to say
the Rapport doesn't count for Jabba, Crime lord would be technically in
 the right.

Thanks for the email, Phenix.  His letter refers to JC 103 I believe.  The rapport issue is one of the coolest features in the game, but perhaps I think it is the most misunderstood.  Before I start with how the name/name contains issue, let me address the Jabba issue.

I agree that the whole Jabba rapport issue was badly managed.  The figures that have rapport with Jabba the Hutt were meant to reduce the cost of the overpriced RS piece.  It is a good idea, but what they did not take into account was that none of them are a) any good, and b) none have bounty hunter, so they have no synergy with the Hutt.  It ends up being a worthless fix to a worthless piece.  They had another chance to do something with Bib Fortuna, but again another fix missed.  The new Jabba is correctly priced, so they made it so the rapport would not work with him.  There is no mistake or oversight.  The rapport not working with Crime Lord was intentional, and seeing how none of the pieces that have it are any good, I wouldn’t worry about it too much.  I, too, did not like that fact they did Tamteel Skreej and made it Lando, while making Boussh that was not Leia, but that was their choice.  Nothing can be done about it now.

Now for the named/name contains.  Whenever an ability says it works with a character whose name contains, it means that anywhere in the name of the character, if it has whatever is stated, then it will benefit form the effect.  The new Vader’s CE boosts the DEF of characters whose name contains the word trooper, so anything that contains trooper anywhere in the title, will benefit.  One wacky example of how this would work is if Han in stormtrooper armor betrays over to an imperial squad, he would indeed get the +6 DEF because he has the word trooper somewhere in the title.

If an effect or ability says that it works with a character named X, then it must be the exact name.  The big one that everyone tries to stretch a bit too far is Commander Cody’s rapport.  He makes characters named Clone trooper cost one less.  That does not include clone grenadiers, clone gunners, or any of the planetary specific clones.  It is simply for the regular 9 cost clone trooper.  It must be for the exact name and the exact name only.

I hope that helps some of you with this issue.  It can be kind of confusing for newer players that are not fully versed in the semantics of SWM.  If anyone has any questions or topics you would like me to cover, drop me a line at sithdragon13@yahoo.com.  I will get to ALL emails, so if you have sent something be patient.  I know I have a few stacked up right now.  It’s coming ;)

May the Force Be With You.
