doc We end this week with a third “free” card. The rare Gearsmith Tactic Invent.

As mentioned in the review of Research Investment, Invent was the second card in what was arguably the greatest combo in Open Beta. As the king of tutoring, Invent made many deck builders salivate. In my opinion, the only thing greater than draw power is the ability to dig for any card you want from your draw pile. Invent gives you that power in spades! While it will cost 4 to tutor for 1 card, it’s only costs 2 more for every card above 1. “Pick a value for X. Pay twice X. Search your deck for X-1 cards and put them into your hand.” With Gearsmith cost reducing abilities, this can quickly and easily become the key to any deck.

It has been ruled (and will be clarified in the First Edition rules) that you can reduced the cost of “X”. For example; Jo Ciendeilio’s “Research” ability is to reduce the next numeric cost you pay this turn by up to 3. You can use her ability, play Invent, name X 8, pay 5 resources and tutor for 3 cards. Do you know how many cost reducing cards and abilities there are within the Gearsmith trade? Lots!

While its threshold of 3 will probably keep it from being pure splash, it will temp many people to add Gearsmith to every deck they can conceive.

In Limited, Invent will be handy. In Constructed, it can be the key to victory!

lgmk Invent

Invent is the other part of the combo which was considered to be one of the most powerful in the game. You saw the other half last week in Research Investment. Now that Research Investment's been edited, the combo's just about dead. Now, that doesn't mean that Invent's a bad card. Being able to search your deck for any cards you like is a powerful effect. I just don't think its worth paying that much. If it wasn't for that -1 in the rules text, I'd like the card a whole lot more. But seeing as, in order for me to think it worth it, I'd need to pay 8, I don't particularly like it. It's so much easier to just draw cards. If you can support it in Constructed, it has its uses though I prefer multi use cards like Luteoderm Prototype.

Constructed: 3/5

Sealed: 1/5 (I'm serious here, I've never found real use for it.)

Draft: 3.3/5 (Here, with the right deck, you're more likely to go into the late game without power cards but needing a very specific card or combination of cards and have resources to spare)
