We haven’t gotten too much recently in the way of one-cost green creatures intended for aggro, as opposed to midrange – things whose use in practice comes down to “attack and deal damage a few times” have mostly been in white. But green has a history of cards like that too, and they ended games even when their power level was closer to that of Wild Dogs and they didn’t get bigger over time. As such, Valley Mightcaller might have at least as good a chance of catching on. In Bloomburrow limited, if you’re in green you’re basically guaranteed at least some of one or more of the four animal types listed; it does constrain your choice of creatures a little more in constructed decks. It’s not a perfect card, needing some time to get to the scale of constructed formats’ biggest threats, and not all decks will give you that time. It compares very favorably to similar past cards, though, so I’m optimistic.

Starting small can have its benefits, and Valley Mightcaller can get big in a hurry, reminding me a good bit of Champion of the Parish. The creature types this cares about aren’t accidental; each of the main Bloomburrow animal types is two-colored, and all four of the listed tribes have a foot in green. So making room for this little amphibian as a bit of inevitability makes sense, as this can get massive without a ton of effort. It’s not so hot if you top-deck this late, but it’s a phenomenal threat early, and it can run away with a game with just a little help from its friends.

Constructed: 4
Casual: 4.25
Limited: 4.5 (it triggering off of all four green tribes makes this easy to fit into any deck, and trample can really carry its weight here)
Multiplayer: 3
Commander [EDH]: 3.5
