Superman – Clark Kent

Well I am going to go ahead and admit up front that I chose the cards for the next couple of weeks. Each week we are going to look at a new group from the new Superman set in order. That basically means this week we are going to take a look at everyone’s favorite team – Team Superman. For this team I chose cards that are 1.) pretty easy to get , 2.) are not being reviewed on every other VS site out there, and 3.) just sound interesting.

The first card I chose for this week is Superman – Clark Kent. Why? Well, if you are going to review Superman, why not choose one that is going to show up in every other pack. I am not really impressed with this card. Basically a 7/7 for a 4-drop is pretty standard. In fact, were it not for his flight and range, I might consider this 4-drop sub-par in comparison to other 4-drops (as far as his basic stats go). His cosmic effect, however, is interesting, but it certainly will cost you in the long run. His cosmic effect simply states that you can activate Superman – Clark Kent and remove a target team superman defender from the attack, making Superman - Clark Kent the defender for the attack. Why is this effect so good on the surface, but bad when you actually go to use it? Well if you hide Superman in you support row and protect him with a smaller character then your opponent will have no choice but to go after that character (unless they have flight) in order to get to your Superman. Usually, they are going to use something small to take out the front row character providing protection so that they can save their bigger character to go after Superman. By activating Superman’s cosmic ability, you will be able to protect your smaller character and stun your opponent’s smaller character even if their character does not have flight (The game does not recheck the legality of the attack.). Now here is the downside - by protecting your smaller character, you have just provided your opponent a nice opportunity to whack on your smaller character with their larger character, resulting in large BEL. As you can see, this card can provide you with an eye-for-an-eye situation in terms of board control, but in the end you will probably come out the big loser.

Ratings:
Team Superman constructed deck – 2.5 /5.0 ...I would actually focus on Krypto if I was looking for some defense or Alpha Centurion if I wanted a good all around card for my 4-drop.

Limited – 3.0/5.0 ...Your opponent will tend to miss their drops more in this format. That could prove to provide a big advantage when playing with this card.

Superman, Clark Kent – This next month we are going to be reviewing cards all from the upcoming new DC set of Superman: Man of Steel. So how appropriate that we start off with Superman, Clark Kent. Of course Superman has Flight and Range, if he didn’t what kind of Super Man would he be?
I have a slight problem with his stats though at 7/7. When an Apache Warrior, John Proudstar, 9/8 is bigger than Superman that is a problem. You see the Big “S” on his chest should mean something more than a mediocre 7/7. Now I realize that UDE doesn’t want to break Superman but at least he should have a slightly higher than avg. DEF of 7 for a 4 drop.

Now I do at least have to complement his Cosmic ability. Cosmic is a new keyword in VS. Basically whenever a character is recruited that has the keyword Cosmic, place a Cosmic counter on that character. When the character becomes stunned, remove the Cosmic counter. Superman, Clark Kent gets to replace a Team Superman defender with himself. It is an activated ability so if you use it during your opponents initiative’s attack step don’t plan on attacking with Superman come your attack step.

Limited: 4/5 – With only 2 other 4 drops with both Flight and Range in the Superman, Man of Steel set, Clark Kent is definitely a good pick. His Cosmic ability is also an endurance saver in this format.

Constructed: 3/5 – I suppose if you are running a Team Superman team, then this is the 4 drop that you want. Even though the K9 dog Krypto has higher stats, he can only benefit from those stats by team attack only.
