Pojo's VS System Card of the Day

  Submariner - Neptune Fist

Card #MTU_066

------

Date Reviewed: 03.01.07

Constructed Modern Age Average Rating: 4.0
Constructed Golden Age Average Rating: 4.0
Limited Average Rating: 4.0

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst. 3 ... average.
5 is the highest rating.

N00bie Magnifico
Sub-Mariner, Neptune's Fist
Marvel Defenders
6-drop at 12/11
Flight

Substitute
Sub-Mariner gets +1/+1 for each exhausted Marvel Defenders character you control.

Being a king has its advantages

Chances are this guy's not going to get much bigger than 14/13 and to get that, your 4 and 5 drops are going to have to be exhausted. No big deal; just have your other guys use their back-up abilities or have them attack before Sub-Mariner.

Having an on-average 14/13 6-drop is huge, but I'm a bigger fan of Silver Surfer at 6-drop. Whereas Sub-Mariner can do a little more breakthrough and quite often without stunning back, the Surfer can do irrepairable damage to your opponent's field by getting rid of a character (most likely their 6-drop) for good. If you do that, your opponent should be ripe for the picking.

In short, Sub-Mariner should most likely never be your first choice for constructed.

Voila, reason number 2 of why I won the Sneak Preview.

Sub-Mariner
Neptune’s Fist
Marvel Defenders/6/12/11
Flight
Substitute
Sub-Mariner gets +1/+1 for each exhausted Marvel Defenders character you control.

Apparently, people thought they could beat me on turn six. That was silly of them to think that.

Sub-Mariner is the most ungodly card in Draft. I had a 20/19 Sub-Mariner on turn six in half of my games. They had no chance. I also pulled many of the good Marvel Defenders cards like Defenders Defend, The Order, Dr. Strange (both 5 and 8) and Imperious Rex. And since I had turn seven, along with the godly Dormammu, my opponents were screwed.

So how good would this card be in constructed? Probably even better. I didn’t even have all of the good Marvel Defenders cards and my deck wasn’t even that consistent. Imagine how good it would be in a true Marvel Defenders deck. Imagine how good it would be in an army deck…

Marvel Modern: 4/5
Silver Age: 4/5
Golden Age: 4/5
Overall: 4/5

Yeah, I don’t think Sub-Mariner was big enough…
