Massachusetts VS. Pro Circuit Qualifier

Academy Games

Ayer, Mass.

11/7/04

This is my second PCQ that I have attended.  We traveled about 2 ½ hours to get there.  My son, our friend Matt B. who owns a comic book shop, and I leave at 6:30 am to get there for registration for sealed that starts at 10:00 a.m.   My son and I both wear our Vsrealms t-shirts.

After signing up for sealed, I meet this husband and wife team from Cali.!!   I guess they travel all around the country for VS. and they have family in the Mass. area they were staying with this weekend.   Tourney started almost on time with 20 participants.   I find my seat and am sitting with Tonya who also does card reviews on Pojo as Naikaya21.   I don’t know she is Nakaiya21 until later in the day.

We then get our 5 Web of Spidey boosters to open.  For those that have never done a sealed tourney at a PCQ before, basically the 5 boosters you start with are just for recording their contents.  You open the 5 booster packs and then register every single card on a registration sheet.  When finished, you then submit all those cards bundled and the registration sheet to the head judge.  Once all players’ sheets and cards are collected, the head judge randomly passes out the bundled cards with the registration sheet all rubber banded neatly together.  Those are the cards that you can keep and build your 30 card deck out of.  The chances are slim that a player receives back their initial cards that he/she opened from the 5 boosters, but it can happen.

The deck I built with the cards given back was:

Round 1 vs. Christine

Christine is one half of the husband/wife team that came from California.  Christine drafted Syndicate but was off to a slow start.  Meanwhile I had ESU Science Lab flipped and everytime during her initiative she would attack I would exhaust to draw card.  With 2 Twist of Fates I was able to get out my 4 and 5th drops.  She made a tremendous mistake by discarding her Cosmic Spidey when she discarded a card for attacking my Black Cat.  By Turn 7 when Ezekial came into play for me, I was able to draw about a 3rd of my deck.  The game went to turn 8 on time extension and my Cosmic Spiderman made all the difference in endurance totals to win the game for me.

Record 1-0

Round 2 vs. Dan

Dan is the 2nd half of the husband/wife team from Cali.  What are the chances of me playing both of them right after each other?   Both were very pleasant to play. We had a good early game going and are life totals were near equal.  I just had an awful mid game and missed my 4 and 5th drops.  It was over by Turn 7.  I did manage to get him down to 16 but his Ezekial and Kaine dropped me.

Record 1-1

Round 3 vs. Ken

I don’t remember much of this match or my opponent but from my life totals sheet I was able to knock him down past 0 endurance and I still had 18 left.

Record 2-1

Round 4 vs. Eric

I met Eric earlier in the morning.  Funny thing is that he opened up the packs that I constructed my deck from.  I didn’t tell him this as he would of known I was playing Spider-friends.  I managed to get off all of my drops 1-8.  I pulled off all 3 of my Alley-oops against his attacks and by Turn 8 when Cosmic Spidey hit the board he pretty much conceded.   Final endurance total was 13 to –9.  I asked him after the match if the cards in my deck looked familiar and I told him that he was the player that opened up the packs.  We both got a kick out of that.

Record 3-1

Round 5 vs dude with Eagles jersey on

I lost my sheet for this match so I don’t remember his name but I do remember that he had an Eagles jersey on.   I went crazy again hitting all my drops and at one turn I remember that I Sucker Punched one of his characters for the stun and he was like woah nice play.  When he saw Ezekial Turn 7 and then Cosmic Spidey Turn 8 he pretty much conceded.

Record 4-1

Round 6 vs. Justin

Justin was a cool kid I met earlier in the day.  I say kid but he is probably 20 or so.  He had his Boston Red Sox cap on.  I remember him saying that he wished his dad would play card games.  Justin was real cool and we pretty much knew we would both make it to Top 8.  We played out and Justin ended up winning on Turn 7 right before I could have had him on Turn 8 with Cosmic Spiderman.

Record 4-2

Going in to the finals, our very own Nakaiya21 from pojo was top seed with a 5-1 record.  I was in 5th place.  Top 8 is Booster draft.  We all sit around the table and draft from 3 packs.  So there is a total of 24 packs.  Like usual I draft total crap.  I remember seeing a ton of J. Jonah, Aunt May and Archangel.  I make a real crazy Wild Pack, Silver Sable swarm deck.  I don’t get any thing higher than a 6 drop though.

Top 8 starts and I am faced off again against Justin.  Top 8 is the best 2/3 matches.  Justin wins both games and I am done.  I found out that tonya also loses as the Top seed.  She ends up in 5th place and I take 7th place.  I got an extended art promo foil of New Brotherhood, 6 packs of Web of Spidey, and a UDE Spidey t-shirt (like my 3rd).  It was a great time.  Feel free to contact me at JSChimento @aol.com
