Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Diffusion Wave-Motion

Card Number - MFC-107

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst.  3 ... average.
5 is the highest rating

Date Reviewed - 10.16.03

DuelMonster Thursday:

Diffusion Wave-Motion/Diffusion Wave:
MFC-107-Secret Rare
Spell Card:
Effect: Pay 1000 Life Points. Select 1 level 7 or higher Spellcaster-Type monster on your side of the field. During this turn, only the selected monster can attack and it attacks all monsters on your opponent’s side of the field. The effects of Effect Monsters destroyed by the selected monster in battle cannot be activated.

Pros:
Adds a Hades type Effect - Negates WotBF, Sangan, Tomato, Etc.
Attacks All opposing Monsters

Cons:
Only works w/Spellcasters
Only the selected Monster gets to attack
You can't choose NOT to attack any Monsters

Combos:
DNA Surgery - Make any Monster into a Spellcaster.
Fairy Meteor Crush - Mass Trample

Notes:
So far the only Monsters that this card works on without using DNA Surgery that I could find were:
Dark Magician, Kazejin, Skull Knight (not worth using), Cosmo Queen(hard to find McDonalds promo), and Dark Paladin. For unreleased cards that I could find there's a Ritual Monster called The Legendary Flame Lord which has a very sick Effect, Magician Of Black Chaos, Black Magician Of Chaos )which was recently restricted) and Dark Sage, there may be more but I couldn't find any.

For being a Secret Rare here and in Japan you'd expect it to be extremely powerful, well it can be but it's mostly for certain Deck Types mainly SpellCaster/Magician Decks, but as I stated before if you use DNA Surgery you can use Diffusion Wave with any level 7 or higher Monster you can get on the Field. A good Monster to use with this trick is Mystical Knight Of Jackal and you can return all the destroyed Monsters to the top of your opponents deck. Most likely this card will be used with Dark Magician and Dark Paladin but with some planning you can use it with many Monsters.

I'm sure you have all noticed that this is the first Spell/Magic Secret Rare to come out so far too. It is a nice card and can be devastating when used at the right moments in the right Decks, but it isn't powerful enough to ever be restricted and can easily be countered. So unless you somewhat build around this card it won't work in the average deck.

Ratings:
Casual: 3.5
Tourney: 3.0
ArtWork: 3.0 - It looks like what Dark Hole would have looked like before it became a dark hole. You know... like when planets explode and become black-holes.

Thursday - Diffusion Wave-Motion

Diffusion Wave-Motion:
MFC-107-Secret Rare
Spell Card:
Effect: Pay 1000 Life Points. Select 1 level 7 or higher Spellcaster-Type monster on your side of the field. During this turn, only the selected monster can attack and it attacks all monsters on your opponent's side of the field. The effects of Effect Monsters destroyed by the selected monster in battle cannot be activated.

More combos for the Dark Magician. Too bad the deck isn't what it's hyped up to be.

Diffusion Wave-Motion isn't worthy of being a Secret Rare in my opinion. But whatever, one less Secret Rare that I'll have to worry about. I'll probably pick some up anyway, just for a casual Dark Magician based deck. I wouldn't ever consider taking it to a tournament, even with the new Skilled Dark Magician to back it up.

The deck revolves around too many mini-combos for my taste, which in turn defines an unstable deck. But like I said, Dark Magician will be the king of casual play. And Diffusion Wave-Motion will bond with him pretty well. I wouldn't worry about running more than one copy, two at maximum.

Rating ~In a casual Dark Magician deck~: 2.9/5
Overall: 1.5/5
Vodkam Thursday 10/16/03: Diffusion Wave-Motion

Normal Spell
MFC-107

What was Konami thinking when they made Diffusion Wave-Motion the first Secret Rare Spell Card?

Diffusion Wave-Motion has a nice effect. Being able to attack all of your opponent's monsters and negating all the effects if the monsters are destroyed is like Dark Ruler Ha Des on speed.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work for Dark Ruler Ha Des or anything but a Level 7 or higher Spellcaster and the list currently consists of: Dark Magician, Kazejin, Skull Knight, Cosmo Queen and Dark Paladin. This card is extremely situational. It would be a huge waste to use this card if your opponent doesn't have multiple monsters on the field and even then, those monsters might not have effects that need negating. Witch, Sangan, Mystic Tomato, Sinister Serpent and Flip Effect Monsters would all be ideal candidates to use this against but really, none of these are any big threats to a Level 7 Spellcaster. The other problem is that if all of your opponent's monsters are in Defense Position, you've paid 1000 LP to destroy them and you don't get to do any LP damage yourself since none of your others monsters can attack.

With such a narrow focus of this card, it will see very little play as it only fits in one type of deck and even then, I still wouldn't use this in a Spellcaster Deck.
