Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

The Agent of Wisdom - Mercury
#SDLS-EN005

Once per turn, you can remove from play 1 "Agent" monster from your Graveyard to select 1 face-up LIGHT Fairy-Type monster you control. It gains 800 ATK until the End Phase. Once per turn, if "The Sanctuary in the Sky" is on the field, you can discard 1 Fairy-Type monster from your hand to select 1 of your removed from play LIGHT Fairy-Type monsters, and Special Summon it.

The Agent of Wisdom--Mercury, opens the week.  So we have new Fairy monsters.  Some of these Agent cards are pretty solid, including their boss Monster.  Mercury, however, celestial as it may be, is not.  We have a Level 4, Light attributed, Fairy type monster, with a whopping 0 attack and 1700 defense.  This thing isn't even a Tuner, so it all ready doesn't have much going for it.  It does have an effect, but not much to speak of....If you control this face-up card, and have no cards in your Hand, during the opponent's End Phase, you get to Draw one card from your Deck during your Standby Phase.  So this card promotes awful Hand management, just to be able to Draw a card?  It won't be attacking, and the defense isn't going to save it.

The Agent of Wisdom – Mercury starts off our Agent review week. This card earns the award for most situational card in the archetype. In order to trigger its effect, which allows you to draw an extra card, Mercury must be face up at the end of your opponents end phase AND you must have no cards in your hand.  At 4 stars with no attack and an average 1700 defense, the only thing this card has going for it are its light attribute and that it can be used as targets for other Agent monsters. There are much better ways to draw into your deck and I highly doubt that even dedicated Agent duelists will include Mercury into their builds.

The Agent of Wisdom - Mercury

Starting off what looks like Fairy Week, our first card the The Agent of Wisdom - Mercury. His effect lets you grab an extra card when you're topdecking, but only after it survives an opponent's turn. He's not terrible, but in a Fairy deck, which will most likely be an Agent-based build now, there's really not much use for him. It's nice that he doesn't need The Sanctuary in the Sky for his effect to work, since that would make him even less playable. The best play you could probably make with him is to bring him back during the End Phase via Call of the Haunted or Miraculous Descent, but there should be better targets to revive then this guy. I really can't see this getting any play, since you have to be in a losing position to use him.

Skyphantom

I like this guy, but sadly, our fleet footed messenger of the gods is too slow. First off, you're going to be setting him, so his effect takes a turn, if he survives at all. Secondly, his effect is like Herbert Hoover trying to help the great depression- not enough. He may be a debris target, but he's level 4. Sadly, the first of the planets is your last choice in agents.

The Agent of Wisdom - Mercury

Since I never took the opportunity to properly introduce myself last week, I thought I’d take the time at the beginning of this week to do so. Obviously I am isca31 here and on Youtube. I first started playing Yugioh during the first few months of Legend of Blue Eyes’ release; so I‘ve been around since the way beginning. I took a break from the game after Rise of Destiny was released and came back right after the release of Tactical Evolution because as many problems this game gives me, I can’t stay away. Anyway, I was never really competitive until I came back into the game. From the minute I came back, Six Samurai and Dark Worlds were two of my favorite decks. Then I started going to events around the time Phantom of Darkness was released. So I’ve been playing competitively for a few years. I am going to more and more events and I cannot wait for nationals this year. I am also very big into trading as a lot of you know from the forums here. So that’s a basic introduction of me and my experience with Yugioh. Now on to the real reason you’re here; today’s card of the day.

Today’s card of the day is The Agent of Wisdom who is obviously part of the new structure deck. The first of the planetary Agents, Mercury is obviously a Light Fairy. Being an Agent, this is clearly good news. With no attack power and modest defense, Mercury doesn’t stand out stat-wise. His effect is the only thing he has going for him and even that is only decent. Drawing cards at no cost is always welcome in my book, but the requirement to get that free card is a bit difficult to meet. Having this guy survive an entire turn face-up is a challenge. Although his 1700 defense could survive an attack from some of the more formidable monsters right now (Reborn Tengu comes to mind), his 0 attack is flawed. If you manage to keep Mercury alive until your opponent’s end phase, you then cannot have any cards in your hand. If this is the case then you are probably already losing. If Mercury had modest attack, maybe he could be good, but without an easy way to get him face-up on the field with enough support, I don’t see a strong use for him in his own deck. There could be a creative way to incorporate him into an Infernity Randomizer deck, but that’s all I can think of.
