Thursday

On yet another theme for the week, we come to Mermail Abyssbalaen. As if Mermail needed another weapon to choose from in its arsenal. Sweet Jesus, this card is on crack. Level 7, Water, Aqua type, with 2500 attack and 2000 defense, who can be Special Summoned from your Hand by discarding four Mermail Monsters to the Graveyard.

That may seem like a LOT of resources to dump to Special Summon a card, but boy is it worthwhile. When you do you target cards your opponent controls up to the number of Mermail cards in your Graveyard, and you destroy the same number of cards.

As if mass destruction weren't enough, this card also gains 500 extra attack per card of its own effect. So you clear your opponent's Field and then wipe them out with the attack after. This guy needs to find his way to Ban Land, in my humble opinion.

Today we are looking at: Mermail Abyssbalaen

“You can discard 4 other "Mermail" monsters to the Graveyard; Special Summon this card from your hand. This guy is a whole mixed bag of pros and cons. He has a terrible discard to summon effect, it has to be four MERMAIL monsters; not just water monsters. (4 water monsters would be bad too) If for some reason you played him, and drew him at the right time, and resolved the first part of his effect, you get put in an ok position with his power boost and destruction; but you probably won’t. His last effect is ok too, but nothing to call home about.
Overall I don’t see any reason you would play this over Leed. It is just all around outclassed in a deck that is already strapped for room.

Okay today we are reviewing a new Mermail monster. It’s another level 7 Mermail but is it as good as the other level 7 Mermails? Let’s find out!!

Mermail Abyssbalaen
Attribute: Water
Types: Aqua/Effect
You can discard 4 other "Mermail" monsters to the Graveyard; Special Summon this card from your hand. When you do: Target cards your opponent controls, up to the number of "Mermail" monsters in your Graveyard (if possible); this card gains 500 ATK, and if it does, destroy those targets (if any). You can Tribute 1 other face-up Attack Position "Mermail" monster; this card gains the following effect this turn.
● At the start of the Damage Step, if this card battles a Defense Position monster: Destroy that monster.
ATK/2500 DEF/2000

So this monster can be summoned by discarding 4 Mermail monsters from your hand to thew grave. That doesn’t sound too easy to do. When it is special summoned in this way you can destroy cards on your opponent’s side of the field up to the number of Mermail monsters in your grave. Then this monster gets an attack boost too. The main issue with this monster is that it can’t use Atlantean monsters to activate any of Abyssbalaen’s effects. This monster also would have been better if it had higher stats than Abyssleed.

The only decks that could use this card somewhat consistently are pure Mermail decks. I honestly wouldn’t even suggest it for those decks because it can be a dead draw and is way too hard to summon.

Next up is Mermail Abyssbalaen, a level 7 Mermail with 2500, or a level 6 with 2700 ATK if you have A legendary Ocean. Like all good high level monsters these days, it has an alternative summoning method. All you have to do is discard 4 other Mermail monsters. Hang on, that’s basically losing your entire hand to summon 1 monster. But if you do this crazy method, you can destroy as many cards your opponent controls up to the number of Mermail monsters in your grave, well thanks to this effect that is at least 4 cards that can be destroyed. Also this card gains an extra 500 ATK making him 3000. All if you tribute a face up ATK mode Mermail, he gains an effect similar to Mystic Swordsman.

Overall, some great effects but the summoning cost is a bit too high.
