We continue our Top 10 Countdown with our #9 card, and the only Forbidden Card to make the list: Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz.

Position on my List: N/A (I had Nekroz of Unicore at #9 instead)

Due to this guy’s extensive history with the Forbidden/Limited List (despite being around for such a short time), we’ve actually reviewed him twice already, so I don’t really know what else I can say about him. Shurit was one of the many things that held the entire Nekroz archetype together, acting as not only a way to instantly fulfill any of your Ritual Summons, but also replacing himself with any other Warrior-Type Nekroz (including Nekroz of Brionac, which would get you to any other Nekroz monster, and Nekroz of Clausolas, which would get you to any of the Ritual Spells). Essentially, Shurit could get you to just about anything in the Deck, which many other cards in the Deck could do. What set him apart from the rest was that he also just made the Deck’s gameplan so much easier.

I chose to put Unicore on my list because I felt that it was the most annoying monster in the Deck to deal with (even moreso than Trishula) due to it lowering the ceiling against Extra Deck-centric Decks. But in hindsight, Shurit is much more deserving of a spot on this list due to being a major cornerstone in the Deck. Without him, Nekroz lacks consistency in its plays, and consistency was one of the biggest things it had going for it.

Hindsight is 20/20 I guess.

And at number 9 we have Shurit.  Why was this card picked for the list?  I don't know.  We reviewed it in July (http://www.pojo.com/yu-gi-oh/CardOfTheDay/2015/July/27.shtml) when it got limited and not too long ago when it got banned (http://www.pojo.com/Yu-gi-oh/CardOfTheDay/2015/Nov/16.shtml)

But it probably is the most powerful card Nekroz had (as hitting it effectively demolished the deck).  It's ability to summon a bunch of powerful ritual monsters for free, and generate card advantage made the deck broken.  And it's still banned now so my opinion of the card is the same as it was before.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz comes in at #9 on the list of top 2015 cards. This little guy is the basis for most of the Nekroz art, and suitably the monster that really makes the deck go.

Use it for an entire tribute for your Nekroz Ritual Summons and then get a free search for a Warrior Nekroz. You can also use Shurit for card effects involving tributes that aren't the Nekroz Ritual Spells.  Nekroz of Valkyrus comes to mind. Tribute Shurit, draw a card with Valkyrus, then search out a Nekroz. RoTA and Brionac searched this card in the deck, and while RoTA was at 3 that gave you even more ways to search out Shurit.

There is a reason why he was banned, and with him banned, it forces the Nekroz archetype to retool.

Before he was banned, Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz received a 3.93/5. When he got banned he got the legendary 'banned/5' score. I'm not sure if he will come back to the game. If he does, will Nekroz still do well? I doubt it. If they bring this back, I hope they just ban Ritual Trishula. Short review because, ya know, banned.

Score: banned/5 or maybe 3.5/5 in his own deck if it comes back?
Art: /5 "Art: 4/5 I love heterochromia."
