Dark Maltos's Dueling Dome
My thoughts

March 22, 2006

Greetings, im back, here doing what I do best - Articles. My first, my thoughts on the brand spanking new ban list , and what I think of it.

The new ban list has caused great controversy , and the majority of players are really cheeesed off at UDE for not creating a ban list that reflects our dueling environment, but in all honesty they had not choice. Konami wished for a global ban list and that’s what we got. Well anyway, lets get on with it :

The banned :

Cyber Jar :

The banning of Cyber Jar made me die a little inside. Since I have owned one, I have used Cyber Jar whenever possible. it’s a great card, but more importantly , it’s a fair card. Its been the biggest life saver in any of my decks, as well as a nice resource replenishment for me after a period of binge over extension. Rewarding players who over extend (which is basically me specifically) has always been a vital part of my ideals in Yugioh. Having sources at your disposal is what makes the game fun.

Obviously though, Cyber does have qualities that merit banning. Cyber serves as one of the best field clearers there is , as well as providing mass swarm and turn player advantage. A skilled player using Cyber Jar wisely can really tweak it to their advantage.

Dark Hole :

I have no objections to this being banned. Dark hole, for the most part, was a Raigeki. No player can argue with it. It crippled so many cards and strategies that it would be unfair not to ban it.

Exchange of the Spirit :

This card was hard enough to get as it was, never mind to pull off. Did it merit banning ? I don’t think so, but since the deck was already so unstable and scarcely used I guess no one misses out.

Last Turn ;

Where’s the Heart? No one ran this, why ban it? It was fun wasn’t it?

Well to put it simply, no. The Jowgen, Wall of Revealing light, combo wasn’t fun to play against, although Last turn was. Did it merit a banning? Absolutely not. Last turn was a complex card that im sure we haven’t heard the last of.

Time Seal

Hmmm…was this even restricted last format? I have no idea, and do you know why? Cos no one used
it !!! THIS ban hurt no one that I know of. Simply pointless, but whatever floats your boat I guess…

Of the cards banned, I only really agree with Dark Hole, and although I miss my Cyber Jar, I still really have no problems with the cards they banned, but I still feel there are some cards missing. Ahhh well.

With the banned cards, we also received some cards from the list ;

Graceful Charity :

The immediate eye catcher. It’s good to have a bit of draw power back, but its abusability with Dark World makes it unfair. it’s a shame, and as it stands now with Dark world being so plentiful I do feel that Pot of Greed would have been the superior replacement. Still, its great to have it back. To be honest I kind of feel guilty when im using it, its almost as though im cheating.

Mirror Force : Now this may be the most controversial decision of the lot. Mirror force makes a triumphant return as being the best monster removal card in the format (maybe tied with Torrential Tribute) . Personally, I like its release as it serves as a far more situational Dark Hole, being a trap as well as prone to s/t removal. In the hands of a skilled player, Mirror Force will be deadly , and in the hands of a less skilled player at the very least it’s a Sakurtsu Armour.

The problem is that most would argue that the sheer psychology and simplicity of the effect will damage the mind frame of the players. I can see where they are coming from , but I disagree. Without cards like mirror force in our environment the game will be reduced to last formats mind numbing simplicity of 1 for 1’s . Mirror force adds complexity to the game and will hopefully broaden the minds of the players. A great un restriction there.

As far as restrictions go there was one that I was exceedingly happy with, and others that I wasn’t so thrilled about. Its also the reason Cyber dragon didn’t need restricting .

DD Assailant :

I knew this was going, and I’m ecstatic that it did. DDA , as with all the d.d warriors, may be ‘fair’ 1 for 1’s, but they are all obscenely powerful. The single handily wipe out an entire opposing strategy, and its good that they are nearly gone to 3. Unfortunately, DD Warrior still remains. It’s almost a guarantee that this will be the new DDA, and I knew from the very beginning that this card needed restricting alongside its DD cousins. All these monsters under similar circumstances serve similar purposes , and its all towards a dangerous means. As it stands, Warrior Toolbox has access to 5 of the most powerful effect monsters in the format, and on our heads be it.

With DDA gone Phoenix decks will blossom, and rightly so. Its about time Phoenix became as impossible to kill as it deserves to be.

Drop Off ;

Sure it was irritating, but restricting it? I don’t think so. It seems Konami is making an effort to eradicate the control element of the game.

Last Will ;

Another otk combo down the pan, but was it really necessary? You just made a little kitten cry Konami, its just been locked in a cage.

Mask of Darkness ;

Inferior to magician of faith and yet its restricted? Hmmm….

Level limit Area B ;

Fine, just go ahead and stomp my Hamon deck to oblivion !! This was a key card in stall, and im sorry to see it go down.

Pot of Avarice :

Now this hit me quite hard. Avarice was not a great card, it was a useful card that you could benefit from if used skilfully. Most of the time it was a dead draw anyway. I think a semi limitation would have been more appropriate personally.

Treeborn frog :

Why ? It prevents its own abuse with its own effect, why would you want to do this? You’re out for D3S frog aren’t ya?

The semi limitations were in some cases sensible, but in others extreme.

Apprentice Magician :

Ok, smooth move Konami, I see where you’re coming from. And it doesn’t hurt anyone.

Deck Devastation Virus :

Ok, ok, WTF? DDV is a great card when you can pull it off, but putting it in with Graceful charity as well? What were you thinking? Honestly, you might as well ORDER everyone to run Dark World. This is singularly one of the most powerful traps in Dark word already., eliminating virtually an entire deck load of monsters. Real smooth Konami….

Magician of Faith ;

Now this takes the cake. Personally , I like Magician of Faith in twos, as long as the cards you can get back aren’t too good, but allowing this back with Graceful Charity? Ahhh, well, I run a spell caster deck, so I grudgingly accept your gift, come on Tsukuyomi, stop crying….mwahahahaha….

Nobleman of Crossout :

Ok, this is a powerful card but should it have been semi limited? Well if Magician of Faith has anything to say about it, I think it does.

NOC is also the bane of Delolchi and Magical Merchant, and therefore an entire deck type. Still, at least it’ll get some more credit now….

Along with the above mentioned, there are some cards that merited a restriction ;

Spirit Reaper ;

This card has always been too good to run in 3’s in my opinion. A restriction would have been better, but I guess 2 Nobleman of Crossout will keep them in check.

Don Zaloog :

Maybe not limited, but semi limited for sure. Don Zaloog has a game breaking effect, and 3 is way too many. In this right hands, this is a god…

Brain Control ;

Why this isn’t used is beyond me. Its like having 3 change of Hearts in. Ahhh well, when will you people learn…

Sakurtsu Armour / Widespread ruin / Bottomless trap hole:

Each merited restriction far more than any Last will or level limit area B. Konami should look at the cards overly used on a global scale to try and figure out how their lists will affect the game, and what else they should restrict in the process.

Smashing Ground / Fissure / Hammer shot

Each shares the same effect virtually, but since smashing is the only one widely used being obviously the superior, I think a restriction would at least add some diversity and variation.

Morbius

Morbius should have been restritcted, if indeed he is better than jizo. THAT was just crazy

The new ban list, on the whole, is not a bad one. It is almost identical to its predecessor except with Graceful and Mirror force there to boost up our decks.

Towards the end of the current ban list, I was enlightened that originality was indeed a possible concept , although people could not see it for far. So what if your Dark Magician dies next turn? A Cyber dragon would fall to the same fat if that were your only monster. Originality can happen but only if you want it to happen. Mirror force and graceful charity only strengthen an original decks potential.

Well anyway, that’s it for me. I got a lot off my chest, and its certainly shown in the length of this article. As always, Toddyhole@aol.com for your responses. And before I go, one more thing…

I’M BACK BAYBEE !!! No more decks from me, Lol, have a good one guys !!!
