Dark Paladin's Yu-Gi-Oh! Dimension
Problems in the Metagame today

8.17.05

Hello again to Pojo and Yugioh fans one and all!

I've taken a break from my set reviews for a little bit (but don't worry LOD review is on the way soon!) to talk to you all about the metagame.

The first problem that currently engulfs the metagame is the lack of originality. I know I've said this before, but it's true. On average, easily 95% of the decks you see out today are your Cookie Cutter Warrior Chaos or a Zombie deck. These two decks have dominated the tournament scene for far too long, and I for one, am sick of it. Now, I can't be the only person who is tired of seeing the same decks and the same cards everywhere a person may go.

Take myself for instance: I run a Dark Paladin/Magician deck. Is it the most successful deck? No. Do I win every duel I play? Heavens no. But, do I have a good time playing? That is one thing I do EVERY single time I duel. Just because a deck may not be as successful as your Tier 1 decks, doesn't mean that it shouldn't be played. Many people who complaign about Zombies and Chaos do simply that--complaign.
No one DOES anything about it. Make an underused, or even come up with your own deck around whatever card you want...and keep working, and keep working at it until it can beat the Tier 1 decks.

That brings me to my next point...Complaigning vs. Acting. As I said, some duelists will only complaign endlessly about their problems but don't do anything. Remember the old saying "If you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the problem!" Also, people have become more concerned with winning rather than having fun. If you can't put winning ahead of having fun, than Yugioh fails to become just a game, it becomes an obsession.

Finally, for my last point, I come once again to the upcoming Ban List.
The newest update to the Ban List is less than 6 weeks away, and it could single handedly make or break the fragile hold people have on this game. Would it be a good idea to ban Black Luster Soldier--Envoy of the Beginning? Of course, but will it put everyone's probelms out the door? Not at all, and why you may ask...If BLS is gone, it makes way for a new card/deck to be abused. Now, this is what some people want, but here's what people aren't realizing: If it isn't BLS it's something else, if it isn't something else, it's something ELSE, and so on. There's always going to be the dominant deck or card or whatever, and we become stronger players by facing them.

The next Ban List needs to make some drastic changes in order to keep players interested and excited about the game. Banning such game-breaking cards as Pot of Greed to hinder even the best thing in the game--draw power. But, until October 1st, we'll just have to wait and see.

I hope you enjoyed this serious article, and and feedback or comments are welcome.

As always, please feel free to e-mail me @ tsearcy@lssu.edu

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

~Dark Paladin~
