You'll Never Shine if You Don't Glow!

Well, DARK style decks have been all the rage recently. Dark Armed Dragon, Darklord Zerato and Allure of Darkness are taking the SJC circuit by storm. Yeah, well how do you make a competitive deck if you can't sell your kidneys to get the requisite DARK cards? Well you take some of the best cards in the game, combine them with some outlandish cards and then tell yourself that this is somehow a completely cohesive strategy that can take on the biggest juggernaut monster the game has ever known. Well this deck started out like that, and though it is not nearly fast enough (at the moment) to compete with Dark Armed Dragon, it is really fun, easy and cheap to build.

I think that we can all appreciate the fact that good cards cheap is going to almost always be better than good cards that cost more than some cars. So that was why i devised this deck with cheapness in mind. Since everyone is goo-goo ga-ga over DARK monsters, I figure that LIGHT cards at the opposite end of the spectrum must be pretty cheap. I was right. I had most of the cards for this deck in my junk holos binder!

1x Torrential Tribute

The first thing that you'll notice about this deck is that it is very simple and easy to build. The hardest card to get in the entire deck is going to be Zaborg the Thunder Monarch. The second thing is that there are almost no Trap cards. Only the big 2 are represented here. That is because I believe that we can get everything we want in our traps in quickplay spell cards. Jinzo is a key card for the DARK deck, allowing the player to attack without fear of retribution. This deck however is almost entirely based on taking your opponent's monsters and using your cards to destroy them or convert them to your cause.

Only Shooting Stars Break the Mold

This deck is crazy fast, at least it would have been called that before Phantom Darkness. Magical Merchant allows you to sift through your deck for any one of the amazing spell cards in this deck, as well as filling up your graveyard for Freed. Freed himself is a lynchpin in this deck. He removes threats, is searchable and has a decent ATK to hold it all together. Zaborg does what he does best, nuking monsters and smashing face, as well as being a LIGHT monster for Freed. Cyber Dragon helps to get Zaborg to the field as well as being a LIGHT Special Summon that becomes 4200 ATK when used with Limiter Removal.

Blue Thunder is a beast. He is probably the best common from PTDN, and his LIGHT Machine stats on a 1700 ATK body and token generation make him easily the best of the Gradius Series of cards. Shining Angel is a good card, searching DD Warrior Lady, Marshmallon, Vic Viper or The Calculator as well as being greatness with Creature Swap. Electric Virus generally won't be all that great. People tend to win when they drop a Dragon or Machine nowadays, but often Jinzo or DAD will be sent out to test the waters and you can drop this to swing for massive damage. DD Warrior Lady is a LIGHT Warrior with an awesome effect. Marshmallon is cute and can stall as well as burn. Vic Viper is an awesome card with LOW ATK. This is remedied by the suite of Spell cards that make that a non-issue. The Calculator is an iffy choice, as you will likely not swarm the field, but he can be a searchable beatstick as well as boasting a LIGHT attribute.

Enemy Controller, Shrink, Limiter Removal and Book of Moon can either be defensive or offensive, depending on the situation, and given our monsters relatively low ATK strength they are welcome, especially with Blue Thunder. Creature Swap trades our flipped Merchant, Shining Angel or other not so useful card for their beaters and the rest of the spell lineup is really basic for any aggressive deck, and of course the two trap cards are as well.

Lightstorm Fury

This deck can make some crazy plays, usually involving Enemy Controller, Creature Swap or Electric Virus. These cards all allow you to take your opponent's cards and use them against them. Jinzo, DAD, Darklord Zerato and other cards are all worth taking. You won't be able to use their effects (DAD and DLZ both need DARK monsters to work) but your opponent will likely have to act to defend themselves, all the more potent because often their own Jinzo will be negating their own trap cards.

Gadgets rip this deck to shreds, their ability to continuously gain advantage is amazing, and your spell cards will likely not be enough to protect you. Pretty much the deck is designed to take down Dark Armed Dragon decks. However, I have found through playtesting that it is quite effective at standard monarchs as well as any of the slower decks. In a 10 game playtest with my version of the Dark deck (only 1 DAD) this deck won 8 of them. The fact that almost every card in the deck gives you a +1 or will be able to be used offensively as well as defensively makes it great in most matchups, even cosmos is decent due to Dimension Fusion.

Well that's it for this deck. I still have a card contest going on, and it will close very soon, so get your entries in while you can. You can reach me at raptor1k@hotmail.com

Thanx for reading!
