GZ Regionals Report
 December 15, 2009

The Pre-Game

Normally I would post this in the Tourney Reports forum, but since I already have a stash of devoted listeners, I figured it would be awesome to just put it here. This is the Regionals in Sacramento this past weekend (I will be in San Jose on the 19th if anybody cares) at Great Escape Games.

I just wanted to start things off by saying that this was the second most abysmal Regional that I have ever been to. There was a line a million strong to sign up and they had to turn people away because they didn't have enough product to give away. I just barely squeaked in. During the first round there weren't enough chairs for everyone and so many players had to stand, including me.

Anyways, ist started out early with Collin and AJ coming to pick me up. After some in car dog dookie, we made it there in one piece. Many players I knew were there, including Jeremy, Ethan, Sven, Malvin, Benjamin, Jacob and almost the entire rest of the Davis/Vacaville crew.

After the initial delay of an hour (they had one person doing the sign-ups) I had found that I had made a mistake on my decklist. Instead of a My Body As A Shield, I had included Plaguspreader Zombie instead. It would actually help me out a lot during the rest of the tournament.

I was playing a Princess Debris deck that actually did not do too badly. I will put the decklist up in a later article.

Round 1

GeneralZorpa VS Ricardo Chavez (Anti-Meta with Honest)

Game 1 he got off Kycoo and wrecked on Dandylion. I managed to come back with some clever plays like Double Mark of the Rose on Chaos Sorceror and Doomcalibur Knight and then Synching with Plaguspreader twice after I had killed Kycoo. I lost track of lifepoints this match, but I always dropped low early in this match and then came back because he never drew Oppression.

Game 2 I drew all 3 Debris Dragons and had Dandylion in the graveyard due to Foolish Burial. He managed to kill my two Stardusts and then I played Black Rose when he was topdecking and ran over his set Honest, the first I had seen all game. He drew nothing and it was all over.

Round 2

GeneralZorpa VS Thomas McDowell (Monarch Oppression/D-Fissure)

Game 1 I managed to keep his monsters off of his field with his own Oppression after he hit my Ancient Fairy Dragon. I MST his D-Fissure and then peck him to deck with my guys. Tomato got in for a lot as did Nettles, and Plaguespreader killed him. I sided in Thunderkings for some extra firepower and Book of Moons to deal with his guys.

Him-8000-6200-4200-3000-1600-1200-200-100-0

Game 2 He set four to his back row first turn and I play My Heavy Storm and it is pretty much all over. Tomato, Debris and Rai-oh beat him down heavy that game and he only drew a pair of D.D. Survivor as a comeback.

Me-8000-6600-5800
Him-8000-7200-7100-5200-5100-3700-2300-0

GZ is 2-0 at this point! Yay!

Round 3

GeneralZorpa VS Welchie (Blackwings)

He wanted me to use his online name, he says he is responsible for the longest match ever in a top 8 at an SJC.

Game 1 He gets off a double Whirlwind early on and it is back and forth between my removal and his swarm of Blackwings. Eventually Oppression justruins my face and he manages to Synchro big guys for the win. I misplay this game, playing Mark of the Rose on the wrong Blackwing. If I had taken Shura, I would have had Gale as well as Don Zaloog on the field as threats backed up by removal.

Me-8000-5700-4400-3600-0
Him-8000-7350-4650-3850

Game 2 He gets a god hand, and manages to get Vayu into the grave early and drops DAD+Bora+Armor Master+3 Kalut for game.

Me-8000-0
Him-8000-7000

Round 4

GeneralZorpa VS Jon Willoughby (Hopeless Dragon)

Game 1 I cannot keep his massive Dragons off the field and get destroyed by superior firepower. Koa'Ki meiru Drago was a beast this game, keeping my guys off of the field.

Me-8000-5700-4400-3600-0
Him-8000-7350-4650-3850

Game 2 I side in Rai-Oh and Kycoo. I getan early Tytannial but she gets destroeyd by massive Dragons. I end up Mirror Forcinga nd turning the Game around. I Synchro up for Colossal Fighter while he was telegraphing Torrential and I lose big on that play. I get Ancient Fairy to the field in DEF and he can't get around it. I end up removing all of his Dragons and swing for victory with Ancient Fairy and one of his Creature Swapped Dragons.

Me-8000-6400
Him-8000-4400-2300-0

Round 5

I would like to point out at this point that I am extremely hungry, as because of the late start and other things, there is no lunch break, which sucks because my brain gets fuzzy around here from lack of nutrition.

GeneralZorpa VS Mike Pablo (Zombie Diva)

Game 1 He brings out Colossal Fighter to destroy me after about 8 turns of "set and go". Eventually he clears my field after I have poke him a couple times and I am stiuck with a dead Tytannial and Creature Swap in hand and have to concede. I would like to point out that all but one of the matches I lost I drew Tytannial. Coincidence? I think not.

Me-8000-2500-1800-0
Him-8000-7200-4500

Game 2 He does what Zombies do and sweeps me with Brionac on turn 4 bringing up a ton of Synchros and Zombies. I am still beating myself up over this because I had Shining Black C in the graveyard and did not destroy his first Brionac. Big misplay.

Round 6

GeneralZorpa VS Adam Salas (?)

I did not keep notes during this game, but he ended up winning and I forget what he was playing, sorry Adam!

Round 7

This was the best ending to a game that I have ever seen.

GeneralZorpa VS David Sudds (Gladiator)

Game 1 Murmillo ends up destroying all of my monsters thanks to Waboku, but I manage to get him to half with a few quick Synchros, which he later destroyed. I removed from play his Bestiari with Bottomless this game, which he was very unhappy about. I lose in grand style with a Herk/Chariot lock.

Me-8000-7200-6300-3300-1100-0
Him-8000-5900-5100-4600

Game 2 I make a few misplays and end up paying 4000 for Solemn waaaay too early. He beats over my guys for a bit and then I bring out Catastor while he is topdecking and his Bestiari is removed from Bottomless (again). I then bring out Debri Dragon and beat face for the win while he is topdecking.

Me-8000-4000-3500-1900-1100
Him-8000-7200-6000-2800-1800-0

Game 3 This game goes into overtime. We do the three turns thing and I manage to beat in for 700 to keep the game going into sudden death. He has a few Gladiators out and I have a set Tomato. He beats in with Laquari, sees it is a Tomato and jumps for joy as his Equeste can then bash in for game. I play Hedge Guard, keeping my Tomato alive, and he kills it with Equeste and I get Plaguspreader. He kills Plague with Murmillo and then removes him once he hits the graveyard with Retiari. His field is Murmillo and Retiari in defense, one card in hand and a dead Call of the Haunted. My field is clear and I have 2 Debris Dragons, Dandylion and Tytannial in hand after I draw. His Bestiari is removed from play (Bottomless again) so I have an opening.

I set Debris Dragon instead of Dandylion. He draws and then Summons Laquari. He switches Retiari to ATK and prepares to go for game, attacking with Laquari. Laquari bounces off Debris' 2000 DEF and he takes 200, losing the sudden death game.

Round 8

I scoop to this kid as he is playing Lightsworn and I do NOT want to play against the deck in the final round.

GeneralZorpa VS Travis Harden (Lightsworn)

SCOOP!

All in all the tournament was a learning experience. You need to Synchro often and have a backup for JD in pretty much every game. The article I just came out with grew out of my frustration with certain cards in the tournament. I am going to be at the Regionals in San Jose on the 19th, so if you wants to talk to me you can. I will be there pretty much all day. If you need to get a hold of me earlier, email works well, raptor1k@hotmail.com is where I will be for questions, comments and ideas. That's all for me today!

Thanks for reading!
