MOFOX’S DECK EVOLUTION SERIES
The Chosen 3

Sept 6
, 2006

So here we have it the chosen 3 ideas that will be used for the deck evolution series.

Firstly I would like to thank all of you that have taken part.  I received almost 200 different deck ideas the response was overwhelming and certainly highlighted to me that there are still some very creative minds still out there coming up with wonderfully brilliant deck ideas.

Check out the thread on the Pojo message boards to see some superb examples

Now making the decision on which deck ideas to use was HARD, VERY HARD.  Before I could select which deck ideas, I needed to decide on some criteria for my selection, these were as follows:

  • Popularity – I wanted to select a deck that most people wanted to see done
  • Age – Was it an older deck idea (Gravekeepers) or a newer deck idea (Aliens)
  • Flexibility – How many directions could you possibly take the deck
  • Dependence – Is the deck dependent upon a single card/combo
  • Originality – If I pick a deck that is too original it may be too difficult to understand and play, whereas a non-original deck might not be as fun to build
  • Ease to build – If a deck is too difficult to build then it will never get off the ground
  • Competitiveness – Can this deck compete at the highest levels of tournament play?  I mean it has eventually got to go to the UK National Championships!

There were other considerations such as playability, how fun it is too play and also my own personal preferences (I am writing the articles after all).

So without teasing you any longer here are the 3 deck ideas that will be used for the deck evolution series:

1.     BURN – This has lots of potential routes to take it down, we could go down a spiritual fire art route using combinations of Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi, Horus and Thestalos.  Or we could go a speed burn/direct attack route, an original idea that has some great potential.  Or we could take other tried and tested burn routes, Lava Golem, Solar Flare Dragon, Ectoplasmer.

2.     MACRO COSMOS – A very popular suggestion and could potentially be meta-breaking.  Many people recognise the massive potential of this deck, but have yet to build a successful tournament worthy build.  I see that as a challenge and this deck is perfect for the deck evolution series.  People will wait with baited breath to see if we can stabilise this powerful deck type.

Now I’ve made a controversial decision for the final deck, it was based mainly on the popularity of the suggestion, in fact over 50% of the emails I received wanted this deck to be included.  Considering also that these articles are aimed more at the newer players I feel that this deck choice will satisfy them.  Perhaps with proper evolution and also the help of the play-test team I’m recruiting we can turn this into a true competitive deck.  Take also into consideration the recent banning of all chaos monsters and it makes decks like these a lot more playable.  So here it is….

3.     ELEMENTAL HERO – This was the most popular suggestion of all the emails.  Personally I have never looked at E-Hero’s and certainly never considered them as a competitive deck type.  However when you consider the purpose of this series of articles, E-Hero’s are a perfect choice.  Hopefully we can push them further than others have before.  Remember that I will be utilising you, the Pojo Readers, to help construct these decks.  In addition if we do find that this deck is not that competitive then at least we will have proved so and not just made random statements such as “E-Hero’s obviously suck!!” etc.  Although the basic E-Hero elements are just mid attack vanilla monsters, they have some of the most powerful support in the whole TCG.  The HERO Flash sets of cards are hugely powerful and no doubt in the future UDE/Konami will be putting even more support behind this deck type giving us even more options in the future.  Also we have the following possibility, imagine perfecting, qualifying and then competing in the UK National Championships with an E-Hero Deck………

What if you were to top 8 the UK Nationals with an E-Hero Deck………

Maybe I’m taking it a bit far but you get the idea.

Obviously not all deck ideas could be used and choosing the final 3 was VERY hard.  I hope that I have made the right choices and that you, the readers, can get behind these decks and help me and other’s who will be reading (perhaps even imitating at home) build, develop and eventually perfect these 3 deck types.  I think we have 3 good deck ideas to get behind.  Chaos is gone and the time is right to try out alternative decks.  We have an excellent opportunity to build these decks and competitively play with them.

I would just like to offer my thanx yet again for all those who contributed, the article has produced the biggest response to date of all my articles, knowing that so many people have read the article was a nice feeling and I promise to try my best to make this series of articles as good as they can possibly be.

Remember I am still recruiting for the Deck Evo Play-test Team see the article link below for more details.

Deck Evo Play-Test Team Article

I would like to add that in the first 3 hours of the article going up I had almost 50 emails, at present I have had well over 125 emails about this.  Due to what I’m going to assume is a large volume of emails I would like to point out the following:

ˇ        Please remember there are only 5 places so if you aren’t chosen please don’t take it personally.

ˇ        I will try to let you all know individually by reply if you have not made it into the team, I can’t guarantee that I will, as there will be lots of you to reply to.  If you’ve not heard anything by the 17th September 2006 then most likely you have not made the team.

ˇ        Finally this team is only for the 2006/2007 YGO season, if this is a success (and I hope it is) then I will begin the process again for the next season.  Meaning new decks will be used and a new play-test team will be recruited.

My email address is mofox9@hotmail.co.uk email me for any help or advice or even your opinions on my articles.  I would love to hear your opinions and if you have any suggestions to improve them then let me know.  I will reply to all emails that are sent to me.  Remember newbies no question is a stupid question.

Until next time fellow duellists!
