Cory Crooks Deck - played at the
Columbus Ohio Regional
October 20, 2006

I recently received cards from Joel Simoes and Andrew Marx.  I thank you for your contribution.

In life some things we just refuse to believe.  Is the world coming to an end, is the sun going to implode, is pollution really hurting the environment?  All great things to ponder but until they happen to us first hand we probably will not worry.  Cause in all actuality what do we have to worry about?

Cory Crooks was one of the brave few that I met at the Columbus regional.  Anyone who is willing to throw out the idea of conformity and go against the norm is a winner in my book.  Even better to see someone be successful with such a bold move.  Having gone undefeated until meeting me, he ended up placing 38 out of 248 people.  Upon completing our game I had asked him to send me an e-mail regarding a deck list with the pro's and cons of his deck.  I received this...

-Hey, this is Cory you wanted me to send you my deck list from the tourney so
here it is

Tribs:5
2x Zaborg the thunder monarch
2x Mobius the frost monarch
1x Thestalos the firestorm monarch

Mons:15
2x exiled force

2x d.d. scout plane
2x banisher of the radiance
3x d.d. survivor
1x d.d. warrior lady
1x d.d. assailant
1x breaker the magical warrior
1x mystic swordsman lv2
1x skelengle
1x dark mimic lv1

Magics:12
2x reinforcement of the army
2x dimensional fissure
2x smashing ground
1x brain control
1x confiscation
1x mystical space typhoon
1x graceful charity
1x swords of revealing light
1x heavy storm

Traps:9
2x macro cosmos
2x solemn judgment
2x sakuretsu armor
1x torrential tribute
1x return from the different dimension
1x ring of destruction

tot:41

the pros of this deck

- The d.d. survivors and d.d. scouts give a big advantage to me if I have
macro cosmos, dimensional fissure, or banisher of the radiance because the
monsters will come back giving me plenty of monsters to tribute and do other
things with.

- Stops most graveyard dependent effects of monsters

the cons of this deck

- you have to get one of the remover cards early and keep it on the field in
order to keep ahead of the game

- destroyer cards like mobius, breaker and even jinzo or decree slows the
deck down more than others.

that's all I can really think of besides the king tiger hurts me alot
:P

If you have any ideas for what you think I should do with the side deck plz
let me know.

This deck hurts someone who is unprepared.  Imagine my surprise to see my Ninja and all my Graveyard dependant monsters become pointless.  But despite his decks great showing, like all decks it can be better.

First up on the list, some obvious changes need to be made.

........................................................................................
Lets drop some cards,

2x Mobius the frost monarch

-Personally I think firestorm monarch is better than mobius.  Thus I'd side both mobius.  This will help with the tribute issue/hand issue.  As with the current monarch decks "dominating" the format, excessive tributes tend to force poor opening hands.  The opening hand is more or less the deciding factor of who wins.  We want to minimize combo orientated cards.  The reason I think Firestorm (and Zaborg) are better is because their effects will always be useful.  In my game against Cory, he summoned a Mobius on me and I flipped both Bottomless Trap Hole and Scapegoat.  Chain ables are becoming the norm.

2x D.D. Scout Plane

In reality, the scout plane engine never worked for me.  Scout plane is an ok card, but unless you have the other cards on the field (Dimensional Fissure or Macro Cosmos) it becomes a dead card.  Thus to help you with consistency issue/hands I think dropping all but two choice monarchs and this monster will be a good move.

2x banisher of the radiance
this probably should be at 3 as a result of survivor.  Dimensional Fissure and Macro Cosmos will always be minus ones without Survivor on the field (under normal circumstances).  Banisher of the Radiance accomplishes the same thing and works in respect of Survivors effect.

2x Dekoichi

In his e-mail Cory made it a point to say he wished Skelengel and Dark mimic lv. 1 were Dekoichi.  Thus they should be in the best of circumstances.

1x macro cosmos

I'd drop one of them.  As stated numerous other times, we run tech cards as tech.  Unless we use the Helios monsters, Macro is just a game changing trap.  But in a winning situation it will be a bad top deck.

1x return from the different dimension

I know people will be yelling WHY?  But believe it or not, this deck is not capable of supporting return.  The only monsters on our side of the field we want removed will be D.D. Survivors.  Thus using a return to get them back makes no true sense.  D.D. Assailant and D.D. Warrior Lady, maybe a bottomless trap holed Breaker or Monarch will be out of play.  But overall such circumstantial situations do not merit its use.  Besides, we need Mirror Force in this deck.

I noticed the lack of Spirit Reaper in this deck.  Spirit Reaper is one of the best monsters ever made.  With the ability to stall, force quick two for ones, and simply said be a menace.

I also noticed that this deck lacked Nobleman of Crossout.  Upon realizing what I was playing I side decked into 2x Dust Tornado, 2x Royal Decree, and my apprentice search engine.  Face down monsters are a threat.

Cyber Dragon will help this deck out.  He is easily one of the most aggro orientated cards made.  Macro is about aggressiveness.  You hit, hit, and hit some more.  As Cory did in his first game against me, he forced me to waste removal spells on his survivor in order to have a tribute monster or not to die.  Cyber Dragon will help him early game, and comeback from late game moments of loss.  I side-decked King Tiger Wanghu on him as well.  A cyber dragon top deck would of ended that threat.

I do not think MST needs to be in the main deck.  Simply because the card is pointless.  We want our opponent to use their sakuretsu armor and bottomless trap hole on D.D. Survivor.  Thus I will replace it with another smashing ground.  This will help us in top decking and clear the way for a faster game.

thus the final product is.

(42 cards)

Monsters (21)

3x D.D. Survivor
3x Banisher of the Radiance
2x Zaborg the thunder monarch

2x Cyber Dragon

2x Exiled Force
2x Chiron the Mage

2x Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive
1x D.D. Warrior Lady
1x D.D. Assailant

1x Breaker the Magical Warrior
1x Mystic Swordsman lv2
1x Spirit Reaper

Magics (13)

2x Reinfrocement of the Army
3x Dimensional Fissure
3x Smashing Ground
1x Nobleman of Crossout
1x Swords of Revealing Light
1x Confiscation
1x Graceful Charity
1x Heavy Storm

Traps (8)

1x Macro Cosmos
2x Solemn Judgment
2x sakuretsu armor
1x Mirror Force
1x Torrential Tribute
1x Ring of Destruction

I have dropped the number of tributes in order to help opening hands.  Chiron the Mage has been included to make use of extra Dimensional Fissure.  Overall I think this is a more compact version that will be capable of making top 8 at his next event.  On a side note...

If you side deck into something else (maybe strike ninja:P) it would of been an added surprise.  The ability to surprise is a key to winning duels.  This deck is anti-meta because the graveyard is the number one tool in the game right now.  It shuts that down.

Good luck to you in future events.

For other who are reading this, learn from it.  The less situational a deck the better.  The more ways it can interfere with the standard decks the better.

Given enough insight Cory May be onto something.

If anyone needs help, wants to talk, or has a crazy deck let me know.

Until next time
