Bigger Dragons
July 26, 2012

Yes, you've read the title correctly, today I'll be talking about dragons.  Not only, will I be talking about Dragons (Chaos Dragons, to be exact), but, they will have bigger plays than a standard Chaos Dragon deck.

Firstly, here is my own Chaos Dragon list:

Monsters (32)
3 Lightpulsar Dragon
3 Red-Eyes Darkness Metal DRagon
2 Darkflare Dragon
2 Eclipse Wyvern
1 Dark Armed Dragon
1 Chaos Sorcerer
1 Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning
1 Honest
2 Effect Veiler
3 Tour Guide from the Underworld
1 Sangan
1 Tragoedia
1 Gorz, the Emmissary of Darkness
2 Card trooper
3 Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress
1 Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter
1 Wattail Dragon
3 Hieratic Dragon of Tefnuit

Spells (9)
1 Solar Recharge
1 Allure of Darkness
1 Charge of the Light Brigade
1 Monster Reborn
1 Dark Hole
1 Heavy Storm
1 Future Fusion
1 Mystical Space Typhoon
1 Book of Moon

Traps (1)
1 Treacherous Trap Hole

Total: 42

Extra Deck
1 Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier
1 Black Rose Dragon
1 Wind-Up Zenmaines
1 Number 17: Leviathan Dragon
1 Leviair the Sea Dragon
1 Queen Dragun Djinn
1 Number 39: Utopia*
1 Photon Papilloperative
1 Inzektor Exa-Beetle
2 Hieratic Dragon King of Atum
2 Gaia Drake, the Thunder Charger
1 Photon Strike Bounzer
1 Five-Headed Dragon

Overall the deck is only a few cards different from the 'standard build', but, the intricacies change so many angles of the deck itself.  Here are the pros and cons of the deck

Pros
-Makes bigger plays than original dragons
-Gets REDMD and Lightpulsar out faster than regular Chaos Dragons
-Easier access to Exceeds
-Easier answers to Gellenduo and the like

Cons
-Gets hurt by stun decks significantly more
-Much harder to play optimally
-More reactive than proactive

Overall I think the deck, for a shorter tournament like locals or a regional, is a great choice and I would play it over standard Dragons.  At a larger event like a YCS or WCQ or something similiar, I may go with standard dragons and try to tech it for other matchups.

Why am I playing Hieratics?
Simply put, bigger plays.  The reason that the Dragon deck is as good as it is, is because of how big the monsters are, and how much trouble other decks have with dealing with those monsters.  For those who haven't played against Chaos Dragons yet, Lightpulsar and Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon is really hard to combat.  Why?  They bring eachother back.

Lightpulsar dies -> Effect to target REDMD, special summon REDMD
REDMD -> Use effect to bring back Lightpulsar.

Not to mention both of the monsters are relatively huge.

What are the plays in this deck that are so much bigger than regular chaos dragons?

Let's assume you're going second against another Chaos dragon deck, and they start out fantastically with Lightpulsar AND REDMD.  You draw for your turn, and there are several lines of play one can make here, the best involving your own Lightpulsar, and a Tefnuit.**

1. Special Summon Tefnuit
2. Tribute Tefnuit. normal summon Lightpulsar Dragon
3. Tefnuit triggers, special summon Wattail Dragon from your deck.
4. Overlay for Atum
5. Detach Lightpulsar, searching for your own REDMD, in attack mode.
6. Activate REDMD, bringing back your Lightpulsar Dragon (note you already have the two of them out, after only two cards in your hand and not needing resources in 'yard)
7. Overlay Atum for Gaia Drake, Thunder Charger
8. Ram REDMD into Pulsar, take 2500 (ouch.... It's worth it, trust me)
9. Ram Lightpulsar into REDMD, take 300 (I know this looks bad)
10. Lightpulsar triggers, bring back REDMD
11. Run over Lightpulsar with Gaia Drake
12. I'm assuming they don't have another REDMD in 'yard already, as most builds only play 2.
13. Ram into REDMD with your copy of the Metal Dragon

Interesting thing to take note of, in this scenario, you still have 4 cards in hand after all that, so it just gets even easier if you have
A. Anoter REDMD in hand
B. Monster Reborn
C. Black Luster Soldier
D. Chaos Sorcerer
E. Future Fusion
F. Book Of Moon

One thing to note, is that Lightpulsar Dragon can, and does miss timing.  For example, if you have two Lightpulsar Dragons on the field, and somebody uses Dark Hole, then you only get one of their effects.  Also, take note, that if you attack a Lightpulsar with your Lightpulsar (during your turn), their Lightpulsar gets to use its effect, and yours doesn't.  Inversely, if they attack your Lightpulsar with their's, you get your 'Pulsar's effect.

What to do with a turn 1 Future Fusion.

Assuming that you have an average hand and Future Fusion, generally you reveal Five-Headed Dragon (obviously) and dump
1. Eclipse Wyvern
2. Darkflare Dragon
3. Wattail Dragon
4. Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon
5. Lightpulsar Dragon

Here's why
1. Will put either Dark Armed DRagon or REDMD into your hand.  Good light to remove
2. Good dark to remove.
3. Holy hell you don't want to draw this.  It actually isn't that bad to remove, but generally you would rather remove a tefnuit, bacause in a vacuum***, Wattail has 2500 ATK and Tef has 2100.
4. Thing 1
5. Thing 2

If you draw the Wattail Dragon, feel free to dump Tefnuit instead, or, if you actually have multiple chaos monsters, dump Tefnuit instead of the Wattail, it is better to remove Tef, since he is less good the later in the game you go.

Right now I am aware the deck has 42 cards.  It is more accepted by the general Yu-Gi-Oh! community now than in recent years, but, anything less than 43 is acceptable, as it affects your odds of drawing a particular card by less than 2 %.  43 is where is starts to get awkward, and there are only a handful of decks that should have that many or more****.

I hope that this article was helpful, and, if you want an overly complicated form of dragons, then I would highly recommend this build.  I would also like to point out, this is a way to utilize the garbage that is the Hieratic mechanic from GAOV.  If there is a deck you want help with, or htink would be great for me to do an article on, feel free to get in touch with me some how!  I love talking the game with people, so shoot me a message somewhere!

*To be Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustaph Max when it arrives in the mail from V-Jump.
**Barring Future Fusion plays, because it's nigh impossible to beat Chaos Dragons if they get one early.
***For those who have never heard the phrase, "In a Vacuum" means without factoring in ANY other cards at all.
****5th Gadget is the only deck I can think of off-hand.*****
*****5th Gadget is a 45 card Gadget deck that has 9 gadgets, so theoretically everything 5TH card is a GADGET.  Hence, 5th Gadget.
