DeathJester

Regional Report of the October 9th, 2004
Regional in Fort Lauderdale

Hey everyone I’m back again with a tournament report of the October 9th Regional at Fort Lauderdale, Florida hosted by Comic Connection. I myself play for the Comic Connection team, those of you who saw me there I was wearing a Team CC shirt. Our team also had 3 players in the Top 8, sadly I wasn’t one of them but there’s always next time. I finished with a 5-3 record and came in 24th out of 160+ players. It’s taken me forever to write this article since I just finished moving to Orlando and I had no internet connection. For those of you who live up there I will be playing up at The Gathering Place with my Warrior deck. Don’t hesitate to introduce yourself when you see me there. Let’s get to the details of my matches so you all can see what happened…J

Round 1 DeathJester (Aggro Warrior Control) vs. Russell Prisco (Warrior Beatdown)

Game 1

The first game started out surprisingly gloomy for me when Russell opened by destroying my Sakuretsu Armor, using Change of Heart on my Injection Fairy Lily and summoned his own Blade Knight to smack me for 5000 damage. After that first attack I immediately switched my strategic standing to a more defensive one, falling back on my scapegoats, D.D. Warrior Ladies, and Night Assailants to slow down his momentum. After 5 turns I was able to slow him down but that at that point we were both top-decking. He was top-decking Equip Spells (After the game he showed me) and Tribute monsters, while I top-decked two Blade Knights and a D.D. Warrior Lady in the course of 3 turns. He had no defense to respond to that so he ended up losing that one.

DJ 1     Russell 0

Game 2

This game went mostly in my favor; I had a counter to nearly everything he had. I beat him in a few short turns.

DJ 2     Russell 0

Round 2 DeathJester (AWC) vs. Lucien Lemelin (Zombie Control)

Having to play against teammates is no fun at all but nevertheless it has to happen eventually. This match up is definitely one of my worst deck type match ups and the same went for his deck as well. That’s interesting since that’s very uncommon.

Game 1

He opened with an early Ryu Kokki to wreak havoc on my Warriors. This game consisted mainly of trading hits and monsters. I was surprised at the fact that he was not able to summon Vampire Lord, he claims he had not drawn a single Pyramid Turtle. I eventually won that game when I drew Black Luster Soldier after thinning the deck with Painful Choice and Pot of Greed.

DJ 1     Lucien 0

Game 2

The second game went more in my favor since I had the monster advantage through out the game which is highly unusual against Zombies. He changed all of that by summoning Ryu Kokki. Where is the Vampire Lord man?! I had to play a bit more defensively so that I could draw something that could eliminate Ryu Kokki. Take a big guess as to what I drew the turn after…BLS! I had to remove Ryu Kokki from play first. On the next turn he didn’t draw a thing to stop BLS. I feel bad about that win though, drawing BLS to win the game both times isn’t exactly fair.

Round 3 DeathJester (AWC) vs. Bryant McGriffen Jr. (Chaos Control)

To my surprise he was playing a form of Chaos Control. I didn’t think the deck was possible to make but he proved me wrong. I must say that I didn’t exactly enjoy playing against him though; he seemed very disinterested in the game even when it went in his favor.

Game 1

This game lasted about 10 turns. This is what happens when two control decks face off against each other. He was able to summon Dark Magician of Chaos tributing his monster and mine that he took with CoH. I activated Raigeki Break when he tried to attack with it. After destroying DMOC I was able to assume board control with Marauding Captain and Blade Knight backed up by a Sakuretsu Armor.

DJ 1     Bryant 0

Game 2

This game was relatively short. I don’t have that many details for all you about this game. It was very boring since he didn’t seem to enjoy playing at all. I think that was the main cause of his loss, in my opinion.

DJ 2     Bryant 0

Round 4 DeathJester (AWC) vs. Brice Thompson (Control)

How unlucky am I? I had to face another Team CC player. Brice and I usually joke around a lot and are very carefree with our matches. Here are the details:

Game 1

On the second turn he used CoH on my Lily and tributed for his other monster for Jinzo to smack me for 5800 damage. My carefree attitude quickly changed when I realized he wasn’t joking around this time. I used Lily to attack his Jinzo and attacked with a D.D. Warrior Lady. I played Swords but he quickly used MST to destroy it. He then special summons BLS and attacks and I chain with Sakuretsu but to my dismay he chains with Call of the Haunted targeting his Jinzo. He obviously won that game.

DJ 0     Brice 1

Game 2

I drew an amazing opening hand. The Forceful Sentry, Confiscation, Painful Choice, Pot of Greed, and BLS. I opened by destroying his first hand. Then I played Painful Choice to dump some Lights and Darks and played Pot of Greed. Pot got me an Injection Fairy Lily and a Sakuretsu Armor. I summoned Lily and set Armor. On his turn he could nothing but set a Nobleman of Crossout as a bluff. On my turn I flipped over Lily and brought out BLS to attack for a direct 6400 damage. On his turn he drew absolutely nothing to help him and scooped.

DJ 1     Brice 1

Game 3

This game was extremely tense. We both used up most of our defensive traps and spells in the first four turns. On the 5th turn I drew Forceful and used it to get rid of his Coh that he was going to use for Jinzo next turn. I then summoned Blade Knight and attacked his face down monster after which I ran into a Sakuretsu Armor. I then set Solemn Judgment, set Raigeki Break and played Mirage. On his turn he tributed for Jinzo as I expected and I activated SJ to destroy it. That brought my life down to 2800. Then he activated Heavy Storm and flipped over my second SJ bringing my life down to 1400. He set two cards face-down and ended his turn. On my turn he has no cards in his hand and I summon Blade Knight after destroying Mirage with Raigeki Break. I set down another Raigeki Break to bring up Blade Knight’s ATK to 2000 and attacked directly. On his turn he drew Premature Burial and tried to bring back Jinzo and I chained with RB on his Premature. On my turn I drew nothing set it and attacked for another 2000. At this point his life was at 1700. He drew one card, set it face-down in the S/T zone and said “Go”. On my turn I draw and he activates the card he set last turn which was Ring of Destruction. I had drawn MST and my hand size was 2 cards bringing Blade Knight down to 1600, which means I was dead. Luckily I remembered that I could chain MST to Ring and Blade went back up to 2000 killing us both lol.

DJ 1     Brice 1

Game 4

Yet another tense game since we had only 5 minutes left to play. It ended when he drew CoH on my Blade Knight to finish me off. I would have won on the following turn but that kind of thing happens sometimes. Good job Brice.

DJ 1     Brice 2

Round 5 DeathJester (AWC) vs. Michael Leone (Control)

At this point I was pretty down. I was so sure I had that game in the bag. I may have been a little bit too cocky when playing against Brice which clouded my judgment.

Game 1

Control is my worst match-up by far. He used field clogging monsters like Mystic Tomato and Shining Angel. He packed three copies of Scapegoat. As solid as my offense was I couldn’t break through his defense. He was patient enough to wait until I ran out of usable resources.

DJ 0     Michael 1

Game 2

This game went a little bit better. I was able to get an early lead with Marauding Captain and D.D. Warrior Lady. He took care of that lead with Tribe quickly. After a few short turns we entered the famous top-deck war. It was hilariousJ. We both had a counter for everything we could muster. He eventually won in the end by summoning BLS.

DJ 0     Michael 2

Round 6 DeathJester (AWC) vs. (Control/Gravekeepers)

Game 1

This game was particularly stressful for me. He seemed to run about 15 traps at least because I ran into about three Draining Shields and 3 Wabokus in the first 6 turns. His Life Points actually went up to 11900! After attacking into every defensive trap imaginable I was able to lower his Life Points considerably. He was down to 2600 until he drew BLS to win the game. My Life Points were at 2300, I had no chance against BLS.

DJ 0     Kyle 1

Game 2

He side decked 15 cards after that game. It was obvious enough that he changed his deck style. On the first turn he played Necrovalley and summoned Gravekeeper’s Spear Soldier to trample over my DDWL. I then used CoH to take his Spear Soldier to tribute summon Mobius and target his Necrovalley and his face-down Sakuretsu Armor.

From that point I had board control throughout the whole since he couldn’t get a Gravekeeper’s Assailant.

DJ 1     Kyle 1

Game 3

We had 10 minutes left so we had to play quick. He opened quickly by flip-summoning his Spy to bring out a Spear Soldier and attack my face-down DDWL. Then Spy got Sakuretsued. On my next turn I played Breaker to destroy his Necrovalley and run into a Draining Shield. He then played Necrovalley on his turn and summoned Assailant and used Rite of Spirit for a Spear Soldier. Luckily I had Tribe in my hand so I then discarded the Blade Knight in my hand to summon BLS but Necrovalley was still on the field stopping me from doing so.

After 4 more turns of trying to get through his defenses I finally drew Heavy Storm summoned BLS and attacked for the game.

DJ 2     Kyle 1

Round 7 DeathJester(AWC) vs. Mark Rouleau (Warrior Beatdown)

Game 1

I started out fairly well by summoning Marauding Captain and Blade Knight for early board control. However, that plan was foiled by Tribe and Heavy Storm. After that he seemed to have everything he needed to counter me. He won that pretty easily.

DJ 0     Mark 1

Game 2

This game went on for 20 minutes, We both we able to summon BLS to gain massive board control but he over came me by summoning Lily and he luckily had enough Life Points to pay.

DJ 0     Mark 2

Round 8 DeathJester(AWC) vs. T.J. Wright (Water/Stall)

Game 1

As soon as he played A Legendary Ocean I knew I was in for a beating. He was able to bring out a second turn Levia Dragon to swing for a direct 2600. On turn 3 I used Snatch Steal, brought out Lily, and Premature my Blade Knight for the game.

DJ 1     T.J 0

Game 2

This game lasted much longer than the first. He was able to establish a great board position with Gravity Bind and ALO. I had no choice but to set everything in defense mode until I drew Lily or Captain. I used Confiscation to rob him of his Levia that could’ve ended the game for me. He was using Amphibious Bugroth to attack for 1700 every turn! When he tried to revive his Levia with Premature, I quickly MSTed it. I then was able to tribute for Mobius and finally rid myself of those annoying cards. He couldn’t do anything but set in defense. I then tributed for another Mobius to destroy the rest of the back field. I won the game shortly thereafter.

DJ 2     T.J. 0

So there you have it, I finished with a 5-3 record which isn’t that great, in my opinion. My main causes for losing was my lack of confidence and my over overconfidence. I learned a valuable lesson playing at this Regional, never get too cocky after winning and never get let your losses get the best of you. The best to remember is always to stay calm and collected no matter what the situation.

The Metagame

The metagame at this Regional was pretty diverse but very expected. It consisted mainly of Warriors, Zombies, Burn, and Control. However, the biggest surprise was the appearance of Horus and Deck-out decks. Warriors and Control were the most abundant. The Warrior decks consisted of three different variations: Weenie Equip, Warrior Equip, and Warrior Control. Control variants included versions revolving around Enemy Controller and Creature Swap or Metamorphosis and Scapegoat. The Zombie decks there were using the Creature Swap/Pyramid Turtle mechanic to maximize their field control. Burn decks were all much of the same.

In conclusion, I enjoyed this event very much and had a lot of fun. Fun is the most important aspect of this game. If you’re not having fun then you shouldn’t playing at these events as all you will get is a major headache and you won’t get any better. I learned much from the players I beat and the players that beat me. With the new knowledge I have obtained I can only get better as the duels go by. That’s just a snippet of my philosophy of Yugioh. So, if you’re all wondering what my deck list was like here it is:
