DeathJester's Dojo
New Ideas and Innovations: “The Best Team in Jacksonville, FL” Tournament

by Bryan Camareno a.k.a. DeathJester
March 31, 2006

Welcome back to DeathJester’s Dojo. This week I’m here to bring the results from the “Best Team in Jacksonville, FL” Tournament that took place at the beginning of the month. Normally, I would have posted this much earlier but there were a few extenuating circumstances that prevented me from doing so.

As you know by now, my good friend Elmo Gonzales and I have started two tournament tours in Florida: “The Best Player in…” and “The Best Team in…” Tours. These tournaments are designed strictly for bragging rights and come along with some pretty nice prizes. The team tournament is designed in a unique way that not only encourages teamwork but it also calls for a strong team.

Each team in this tournament is allowed only 4 players and each team is required to pay $10 per person ($40 per team). Each team is also required to rank their members participating from 1 to 4 (1 being the best and 4 being the weakest of the 4) secretly to the Head Judge of the tournament. Each match-up will be 4 vs.4; each team’s players will be matched up by their rank: 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, 3 vs. 3, and 4 vs. 4 respectively. The number of rounds depends on teams are present. This tournament is run with a swiss-type tournament structure. Now, at this particular event there were 5 teams and we decided to have 5 rounds.

We seat each team across from each other from 1 to 4. Matches are best 2 out of 3 and each match win that it accumulated by whichever team is recorded as 1 point for the team. In any given round, a team can only earn a maximum of 4 points per team match. If there is a tie (both teams win 2 individual matches), then each team is to select a member of their team to play in a tie-breaker match to determine the victor in the round. These tie-breaker matches are just like a regular match, so both teams must choose carefully. The winner of the tie-breaker match receives 1 point for his/her team. If there is are any ‘byes’ for teams in this tournament then the team will automatically receive 4 points for the round.

This process continues until the two teams with the highest scores are determined after x amount of rounds. The Top 2 teams will then play head-to-head to determine the winner of the tournament. The winning team gets a custom-made plaque stating that their team is the best team in whichever city we hold the tournament in. Only teams from the city we are holding the tournament in are allowed to participate.

It’s a very innovative format for team play and hopefully UDE will encourage this type of thing for the team craze we see in YGO.

At this tournament there 5 teams, the Top 2 teams at the end of the day were:

  • Harold’s Crew from the Diamond Turf store
  • Total Anarchy

Without further delay here are the decklists for the Top 2 teams at “The Best Player in Jacksonville, FL” Tournament.

This tournament came down to a final tie-breaker match between these two teams. Total Anarchy, being the favorite to win in Jacksonville, emerged victorious; not without a strong fight from Harold’s Crew. Harold’s Crew has a strong set of players who I’ve become friends with after visiting Jacksonville so many times. They are solid players with a bright future in this game.

Total Anarchy is a team in which all of them are my good friends, who I’ve known for quite a long time. They are rising stars making a big impact in the Florida Regional scene and I’m confident that they will excel at the 2006 National Championship this year.

Though posting these decklists a day before the format shift may seem fruitless, there is some merit to examining them. Those of you in Florida who are trying to determine what deck will make the Top tables at future events will do well to remember that the format will not change dramatically. The metagame will take time to evolve and will do so after each local/major event. The majority of the decks above only merely need to make a few minor modifications to have their decks ready for the next format.

Hopefully, this type of tournament will catch on in the YGO tournament scene so we can all enjoy the benefits of team play. Magic: The Gathering holds major tournaments with teams; why can’t YuGiOh do the same?

That’s it for this week everyone! Until next time remember to play hard, think about your moves, and most importantly…have fun!

*News*

  • The next “Best Player in…” Tournament is planned for Tallahassee, FL and then we will take the tour to Orlando, FL. Keep reading every week to stay updated on the progress of this exciting tournament tour.
  • Team Fallen will be traveling to the Shonen Jump Championship in Atlanta, GA in the future. Also, we have just gotten our new shirts to wear at every tournament we go to. Look for the logo of a fallen angel on the back of our shirts and don’t hesitate to introduce yourself. We are always looking for new members to add to our growing network of players.
